Guys, great to see your list! Great to hear Joe talking about Caught Up by Millie J. I am baffled by how novelty act Betty Davis can be ranked above Millie Jackson! And I don't understand Jason not liking On The Beach! Cheers!
As a 13 year old in 1974, here is my Top 10 in random order: Bridge Of Sighs / Get Your Wings / Not Fragile / Caribou / Bad Co / Heart Like A Wheel / Pretzel Logic / Fullfillingess' First Finale / Crime Of The Century / Sheer Heart Attack
No Other was pretty well at #1 the entire time from what I noticed. I checked in several times over the course of the dive and it was always there when I looked. Gene fans rise up!
Zappos’s ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’ has some of the greatest ensemble playing of all time…just an absolutely incredible performance whether his music is your cup of tea or not…also ‘Propaganda’ is probably just slightly better than ‘Kimono My House’
On the Beach isn’t my fav Neil Young record but it can’t be overrated given side two which is one of the most hauntingly beautiful album sides of all time. It deserves to be in the top ten for 74 🙏
I feel like Jason might like Agents of Fortune more from Blue Öyster Cult(or might eat those words if you guys do the 1976 deep dive). It has a warmer sound and the guitar tone and work on it is great, and it also has a lot of good variety too! 💙🖤♠️♥️♣️♦️
uh yeah you crazy about on the beach, apostrophe & secret treaties. 3 great albums there. my top 5 would be (for today) 1. Genesis - Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 2. King Crimson - Red 3. Yes - Relayer 4. Frank Zappa - Apostrophe 5. Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties
@@nikosvault I'm not saying it's his best album. But to call it "the most overrated record of all time" is dumb. It's just dumb. It isn't even highly rated by most people to begin with.
It’s his 2nd highest rated album on RYM. Higher than Harvest. Higher than Gold Rush. Higher than Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. And people in our comments will not shut up about it. It wasn’t always this way. This over-appraisal of this album only really started in the last 5-10 years.
I have to give some love to Starless and Bible Black. I give Red a slight edge due to the song Starless, but Great Deciever, Lament, Nightwatch and Fracture deserve more than just a shrug-off. Plus I saw them live after Bible Black came out and 50 years later still a top ten show for me.
Ways to improve your "On the Beach" experience (as a non-fan of the album myself). Replace the studio versions of three tracks with superior live versions... "Walk On" -> Roxy: Tonight's The Night Live "On the Beach" -> CSNY version (Archives Vol 2) "See the Sky About to Rain" -> piano version from 1970 (Archives Vol 1).
Just "Sorcerer", not "The Sorcerer." Very Good movie. Suspenseful, gritty, grimy. Watching it makes you feel like you just spent a week in the hotest, dirtiest, sweatiest, hell hole jungle in the world. You'll want to take cool shower after watching it. The Tangerine Dream soundtrack goes very well with dark, nightmarish relentlessness of the film.
@skybluemarshall I know the movie is called Sorcerer. I call it the Sorcerer soundtrack .. anyway , I agree it's a brutal film. Vinny returns at the end ..
Finally, at least an admission that the album cover of On The Beach is great.... Beyond that, I agree with the other critics (the ones who are not reaching for their stomach pumps) who thinks its Neil's greatest.
Spending the day listening to my fav Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, REM, Lucinda Williams, Cranberries, Portishead & Neil Young albums instead.
I disagree with Jason about Kimono My House. It sounds great to me, and it's nice to see it ranked in the top 20 here. However, I do agree with him about the Secret Treaties album. It's a slight step above Tyranny And Mutation(their 1973 album), but it's nothing special.
From a big Van fan - Veedon Fleece at 48 is way low. It's easily a 5 star album. It's not as accessible as Moondance or even Astral Weeks, but it's every bit as good and actually his best work in my opinion.
Mirage is Camel's most well known, although most likely for the cover art of course. No Rush, Renaissance, or any of the Fusion stuff other than Herbie. also missing Tangerine Dream - Phaedra. Probably their most well known record.

I will share this. I really liked this one!
A nice watch guys, from a guy from the UK who discovered Rock in 1974.
That Camel album is cool.
It’s a good album, Moonmadness is my favorite by them.

Gilbert OSullivan with the marvellous "A Stranger In My Own Back Yard"!

Agree with the top 5. Very nice.
Cool that Babaluma is Joe's favorite Can record. 🥰
On the Beach isn’t my fav Neil Young record but it can’t be overrated given side two which is one of the most hauntingly beautiful album sides of all time. It deserves to be in the top ten for 74 🙏
Side 2 struggles to get to 3.5 for me. Clear step down from side 1. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusicBARELY. Side 1 has for the turnstiles on it which is the albums worst moment and vampire blues is kind of boring 🤷♂️
My 2 favourites are the 2 Eno albums.. i go back and forth on #1

On the beach is a great record...give a spin to revolution blues..

I didn’t see Roy Harper “Valentine” on the list, that’s a shame, great album.
Was surprised that jazz fusion was well represented. The omission is Crosswinds by Billy Cobham. Killer.
Ronnie Wood’s ‘I’ve Got My Own Album To Do’ is also fantastic and should not be ignored or slighted
Parliament’s ’Up For The Down Stroke’ is an excellent 4 star album
2 Queen albums. Queen 2 and Sheer Heart Attack.
Both top 10 in my opinion.
painfully overrated and boriny
"On the Beach is the most overrated record of all time." In the running for the dumbest words to ever come out of Jason's mouth.
Point proven
Niel is my favorite artist of all time, but For The Turnstiles, Vampire Blues and Motion Pictures (For Carrie) are not first-rate NY songs.
@@nikosvault I'm not saying it's his best album. But to call it "the most overrated record of all time" is dumb. It's just dumb. It isn't even highly rated by most people to begin with.
@@TastesLikeMusic You called a record that is barely rated highly by most people "the most overrated record of all time." That's ridiculous.
It’s his 2nd highest rated album on RYM. Higher than Harvest. Higher than Gold Rush. Higher than Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. And people in our comments will not shut up about it.

Big Star not cracking the Top 10 is surprising. Guess Chris Bell was missed. My Top 3 all did Neil , Genesis & Stevie. Very fine 🙂 year.
Big Star, “Radio City”. The best album, with the best song of the year, and of many years…”September Gurls”.

I prefer the 1971 Nashville cut of See the Sky. The CSNY 74 On the Beach is surprisingly great. I don't prefer it to the studio cut, however.
Tangerine Dream!
A few years later , The Sorcerer soundtrack was amazing.

The best prog rock albums of South America are from 1974:
- Tudo Foi Feito Pelo Sol (Mutantes) 🔥
- Invisible (Invisible) 🔥
Jorge Ben???
@TastesLikeMusic I love it 😍😍 but different style. More samba
On the Beach used to be my favorite Neil, but over the years it's slipped and now Comes a Time is my favorite. A more uplifting record, for sure!
I have a really hard time putting anything above After The Gold Rush. It's a perfect record to me
Where can l find that list please?

Critics don’t think it’s his best. It’s just the RYM crowd. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic (Sorry - I shoulda said I agree with *those* critics who say it's his best... namely *me* for example!)
Was trying to remember why I unsubscribed. Thanks for reminding Jason.

Hey TLM, what's the next deep dive going to be, 2004?
1969
@@TastesLikeMusic Thanks

Gonna disagree but it’s quite good.

@@TastesLikeMusic 👍
Not a Van fan, and I hate Astral Weeks, and I agree that it’s one of his better albums lol
@@curly_wyn I like it but it's not in my top 5 favorite Van albums. I prefer his mid 70s to mid 80s work more besides Moondance.
bto and clapton at the bottom a bad bengal start lol
Caribou definitely outta be at the pointy end of any 74 albums list
Mirage is Camel's most well known, although most likely for the cover art of course.
No Rush, Renaissance, or any of the Fusion stuff other than Herbie.
also missing Tangerine Dream - Phaedra. Probably their most well known record.
Oh I wouldn’t say I’m missing Phaedra. - Joe
I wouldn't say Rush's debut is a great album....or even good all the way through.
Late For the Sky is too low! Still waiting on JB discography ranking 🤞🏻
I can't agree more with Jason on On The Beach... extremely overrated
On the beach isn’t good? Do you listen to lyrical content at all
He’s exaggerating his hate because of people like you. - Joe
@ fair
If the songs are able to draw me in. If lyrics are the only reason to like a song then you might as well just read them. -Jason
