Wow, I did not know that it is enough to make a PR and it is not required to be merged!
No wonder people are abusing it. It is obvious that people want to get a T-shirt and it is a period of time when many not necessarily perfect PRs appear, but I am surprised that many people are intentionally creating spammy PRs to get a T-shirt.
C'mon, it is a T-shirt! Which screams that you've put your time into some open-source stuff. I wouldn't be able to wear it if I get it this way.
I hope maintainers won't be annoyed too much with this stuff and GitHub will create some sort of "protection" from this. :-)

maintainers have been complaining about it for years, but it's amazing marketing so it's not going away. making it opt-in won't fix it either, because although it'll save the maintainers, it'll lose all value completely because it'll become a complete spam fest.
but hey, at least it still does create many actual good contributions

The little easter eggs with pre-commit launching black on the lives_matter.py file is just perfect.

Hang on, I'm confused-- all this effort is about the potential reward of a T-shirt? Just a T-shirt?

Free stuff can turn people into monsters. 😁 The utility function of this game is incorrect, and people optimize for that
