    Cheers to that_entomology_guy on Instagram for the great day out! And apologies for all the branches I flicked into your face...
    There was a bit of an editing error at the very end: I inadvertently cut out the first part of “they are completely harmless to humans save for a foul odour”.
    Also it’s possible the raspy cricket is a Paragryllacris as opposed to a Pterapotrechus species.

      @eesoo5420that logic could be applied to a plethora of everyday activities that have a small but still existent chance of resulting in an emergency. Ultimately, the risks were clearly stated in the video, and the spider showed no signs of defensiveness at any point. And funnel-webs are none too subtle with their body language.

      LOL about "one is a perfectly safe household pet and the other is a puppy." Couldn't agree more. I love spiders as very useful for keeping down the vermin. I have yet to see any use for puppies other than as prank gifts to the children of adults I don't like.

    Wonderful video! I especially loved that Acripeza reticulata, it's so weird.
    I'd love to visit Australia one day, although I have to admit that the thought of venomous spiders does scare me a little (not that I'd be picking any up). The only bugs we have to worry about are the ticks, and I tend to get a lot after a walk through grass or thick undergrowth. Are they numerous in the land down under?

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  Год назад +4

      Don’t let the spiders put you off, it’s not like encountering dangerous animals is going to be a part of everyday life here unless you’re roughing it out in the bush. Australian spiders don’t really stand out much in terms of both size and danger. It’s almost entirely media hype.
      As far as ticks are concerned, they’re around, but I’ve never really had issues with them.

    • @PaleoEdits
      @PaleoEdits Год назад +3

      @@BugsandBiology Oh yes I know the whole "everything in Australia wants to kill you" thing is absurd, but you know... one can't help but be irrationally affected by some of that. Call it the "jaws effect". It might also be the fact that potentially dangerous bugs don't really exist here, so it's all very exotic to me.
      But in the end, it's probably more dangerous crossing the road in downtown Sydney.
      Random PS. - I love King Gizzard 🦘

    Getting that Jimmy Carr Laugh out of your System!😂
    Seriously thou , I understand that spiders get a bad Rap , but for the average viewer even hinting they are docile at times is a dangerous message to send. Most bites occur because they have entred a shoe, bed, clothing or accidently in the garden because we disturb them , but never should a person seek out to nor find one and attempt to touch it to test a theory! so i'm not gonna make the typical "australia has uniquely insane wildlife" comment, but i do have to say that i went on a walk in the woods with my dogs the other day in connecticut and was disappointed to see zero large or even medium bugs.
    maybe the fear of australia in the US comes from the fact that at least the northern US doesnt have very much at all in the category of big bugs compared to most other places. even the UK has bigger spiders than we do, to my knowledge. the biggest in ct are dolomedes that only get up to 3 inches in legspan. and like you said before, australia may not be unique in terms of its fauna but their documentation on social media is far more common due to development and distribution so there is that as well.

    Sorry mate but I feel this is irresponsible. Holding a Huntsman is a great way to dispel myths that spiders are out to get us but a Funnel Web. If one decides to tag you, unlike the Huntsman you are in for a rough time. Medically significant spiders should never be down played.

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  Год назад +18

      I get where you’re coming from, but I plainly stated that funnel-webs are medically significant and do possess the ability to kill a person.
      However, the point still stands that they are not out to get humans, and this is an admittedly rather radical demonstration of such. Plus the particular individual concerned was very docile and never showed even the slightest signs of agitation. Would never have attempted the same with one that was threat posing.

      At this size, it’s hard to tell what sex they are. It doesn’t become obvious until they’re close to maturity.
      As for males being more venomous, while that’s definitely the case for Atrax robustus, I’m unsure as to whether the same applies to the Hadronyche species. If I recall correctly, females of some Hadronyche species are though to be of comparable or greater toxicity than the males.
