  • Rear hatch strut support replacement: 30 to 60 minutes. ($60 / $150 / $260)
Volvo 850, V70 rear hatch struts get weak. My buddy's rear hatch was head hunting so I picked him up a set of support struts from the junk yard. It takes about 30 minutes to change them out but you have to be careful not to bust up the plastic trim.

There is a wire clip at each end of the shock that keep the shock from slipping off the ball. I found it MUCH easier to pop the shocks off if I removed the clip first. When you put the new shocks on, you definitely want to remove the clips before putting the new shocks on!
Thanks for the video! It made the process much easier. The dealer wanted $500 to do it!

Thanks Robert! This is the second video I have used to repair my 1998 Volvo V70 XC. You were right about that top panel being fragile like glass. I forgot and did that one backwards from what you said and one of the screw mounts snapped off, But that's an easy fix! Small price to pay for never getting my head smacked by that tailgate again. It happened all the time when I was trying to unload grocery's.

My awesome 2003 XC70 just gave up the ghost. Wife crashed it and the air bags are deployed so they won't pay to fix it. Made it over 300,000 miles and planned to keep going to half a million. BUT! 3 days later and I have a "new" 2007 XC70 with 122K on it. So the adventure begins again. I have another one (2001) that has 270K so far so I'm half way to half a million lol. Thanks go Robert and his awesome videos. I'll be purchasing the 2003 from the insurance company. It's still a great car with lots of good parts.

I had a similar problem but found that by pushing the back door up a little further the shock went on easily. For me, the hardest part was getting the plastic caps off the rear trim without damaging the plastic. I used a very thin plastic card to get one of them off, but for the other I had to resort to a thin metal "pry bar" that is part of my cell-phone toolkit. Great video, thanks so much!

I was cruising till I got to the part where they connect back on. There were no clips on the original struts, but they were in position (and leaking badly). Turns out getting the new ones to stay on when the hatch bounces open was a pain. I had to slowly work through how the clips work. I would have been grateful if that tidbit had been included. I fumbled and cussed for the better part of an hour.

For anyone reading who's working on this, you'll want to do some dry runs threading the clip into the hole. It's designed so that the "clippy part" that grasps the stem is swung out away from the cup joint. Then the "sticky part" gets threaded up into the cup through the two holes, locking it onto the ball. Then you swing the clip onto the post till it grabs the stem.

It never stalls at a standstill only when driving never on the freeway with a highway usually at Surface Street speeds and when coming to a stop once it did

He's more complete than the previous video I watched: > .ipd Volvo Tailgate support shock replacement 850/70 series wagons .
The previous one gave a what I consider a brief overview, skipping perhaps some important things, the light removal, and more important: that the trim piece clips are " fragile as glass" in this presenter's words. A very good caution unless you don't mind an unscheduled trip to the volvo dealer where they'll be glad to take probably 30 - 40$ for a new set of clips. - I'm not kidding, the retainers around your door locks are $12.80 ea! Plus, tax which is almost 10% on top of that where I live. Yahoo!?
Best advice is however This, from me right here:
Get rid of your volvo and never get another
(nice handling, quality ride, super functional design, long roof-rack - all you want, even superb styling for a wagon, still, the repairs are just too absurd. Stuff you rarely see as repairs are commonplace, and expensive all around, ie, even on the common stuff)
