The M47 didn't serve that long in US service. It was an evolution of the M26/M46 tank. The M-26 was the Pershing tank of 1945. The 26 was found to have a low power-weight ratio, so was re-engine during the Korean war (M46). At the same time, the army was working on other designs, one using a range-finder. Due to the fear of war, they fitted new turret to the M46 chassis & built several hundred, but crews said the turret was cramped. The M48 was the solution in 1954. Most 46s were used as aid.
The M-47 was great for speed and maneuverability...developed from the M-46 and used the turret originally designed for the M-41. The ammo stowage was totally assinine and stowed under the turret floor outside of the 11 rounds in the ready rack. The M-13 range finder was worthless. I used them in Ft Knox in 54-56 and in Korea 1958. Israel modified it to M-47 RKM by installing the 105mm gun, diesel and emininating the bow gunner. Other mid-east armies used them also.
Okay, I'm now confused big time. Never heard of the "M47 Patton" tank before. I knew of the M48 Patton tank, which had a searchlight mounted on the cannon. As a grunt, I rode atop a Marine M48 when I was in Viet Nam, and was part of a quick reaction force put together to "rescue" another Marine grunt company in trouble. Quite a ride, with the treads whirring by underneath, right next to my legs. Guess I missed the nomenclature boat on this one.
The M-46 was the first named for Patton...the 47 and 48s also Pattons and the M-60, marginally named...Hated the 48 because of it's very poor maneuverability and weight.had the same engine-tranny as the 46 and 47 but with tracks extended from 23 to 28 inches and 4 tons heavier. Only the M-48A5 used mainly by Israel was halfway decent with the diesel and 105mm gun.
The engine in the M48 was a V12 ,air cooled ,twin turbo gas that made over 800hp, more than the M60. I rode on gas M48's with the 124th Panzer for 2 weeks and they were fast and had great performance. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

We used the M47 for targets in Germany. CCo 1/35 Armor. The 105mm on the M60A1 with heat would blow holes through them all day long.

Which gun is that? The 105 (because of the fume extractor) or is that the M36 90mm?
Only had the 90mm. Never up gunned to 105mm.
I meant most m47s were used as foreign aid.
Had to get rid of them somehow, and get a return on investment. Why not sell it to other countries?
One word.... M1 A2 Abrams.
Please call me in 10 days
What is it with that stupid fake shell on the front? Damn Mickey Mouse crap!
