    Remember at some point you might end up facing a Judge, explaining to the judge that you both loudly racked a round and gave verbal notice will make it clear you weren't arranging an ambush.
    (you should also avoid tricking out your firearms with punisher skulls and such. Don't give the judge any reason to believe you've spent your life secretly hoping for the chance to legally murder the first "dirtbag" to give you an excuse).
    Self defense isn't about killing bad guys, it's about keeping bad guys from killing you.

      @@KLP99 I think you misunderstood the Bantamdude. He's not talking about crime perpetrated by minorities or whites. He's just saying minorities have a more difficult road through the legal system; if a minority pulls the trigger in self-defense, he's more likely to be charged with murder than a white dude.

    I agree. Lots of my friends like to bow up and talk about being tactical. I laugh. 23 years in the Army and several tours make you realize War and Home Defense are NOT the same scenarios. Letting the bad guy / intruder know they made a mistake is pretty much all you need to do in most cases. For all others, be prepared but be aware of the consequences of discharging your weapon in your home. I keep my shotgun exactly like you showed here. Is the best of safety and availability, IMHO.

    The time a spring is under compression does not dictate how quickly it will fatigue. They fatigue by the number of cycles they are compressed and the speed at which they are compressed. The faster and more often you compress a spring, the faster it will fatigue.

I've been hearing that one ever since I picked up my first rifle in 1975 and I'm still hearing it, never mind the numerous studies that have come out showing it to be false. I have a Beretta 92FS with magazines that are 27 years old, they've been loaded 24/7 for all that time and as of last week when I took the pistol to the range they're still functioning just fine.

    • @scooter2161
      @scooter2161 4 года назад +5

      @Avid Smoke One can't just make a general statement on either side of this argument. You could choose a spring for a magazine that will function for basically eternity without ever hitting failure, or you could choose a spring that would work for maybe 10 cycles tops.
      If whoever is designing the magazine does their homework, they will implement a spring that works virtually forever. The spring would always be in elastic deformation ranges and never hit plastic deformation. Cycling the spring will change the shape of the elastic deformation curve slightly, but it will eventually hit a point where cycles will not affect this curve. This is why brand new magazines always seem tighter than one that's been used, even a few times. The materials engineer who chose the spring knew it would have a "break in" period and they design the magazine to still work once the spring hits this "level off".
      You are correct that springs under load will eventually reorganize their structure and lose some effectiveness, but this is over extremely long times (like 30-50 years for any noticeable changes).
      So, these Vietnam War veterans will likely tell me what you said and they won't be lying, but not because all magazine springs do this, just theirs happened to due to poor engineering and spring choice, and likely cheap budgets at the time.
      Also, anyone who takes a spring and pulls it so far that when they let go it makes it longer and therefore more "springy" is actually doing inelastic deformation (permanent damage) to the spring.

      it's nonsense. Modern firearms are "drop safe" This video reads like the dumbest part of gun forum threads where people rack slides to scare the home invader away, and birdshot is great for defense. Any other old wives tales they want to pass on? They don't even know how springs work.

  • @FuglyStick
    @FuglyStick 8 лет назад +188

    You, sir, have earned more respect from me than a lot of the youTube cowboys. A responsible gun owner isn't looking for confrontation, they're looking to avoid confrontation. You don't keep a firearm to ambush bad guys, you keep it for safety. If your reasoning for owning a firearm is to kill bad guys, you shouldn't be a firearm owner. If your reasoning for owning a firearm is protection, up to and including using lethal force, than you should. And you need to know the difference.

    • @logicalwaysprevails7459

      FuglyStick I disagree. if you chose to come in my home uninvited to steal or do harm , or better yet for any reason you've waved your right to be treated with any type of thoughtfulness or discretion. protecting my family comes first . treating a home intruder respectfully doesn't even cross my mind. if your the kind of person who thinks you shouldn't be harmed for going into a strangers home you're a certain kind of stupid. there will be no racking of the slide, just shots fired until the threat is neutralized. now if you go out in public with this mind set , your gun owner ship should be questioned but not when it comes to my home period.

    • @logicalwaysprevails7459
      @logicalwaysprevails7459 7 лет назад +7

      you also said gun owner do not buy guns for confrontation they are for safety. but if your in my home as a stranger you've brought the confrontation to me and you're making my home unsafe the moment you step trough the door. I believe no gun owner wants confrontation but the reason for being a gun owner is to stop the confrontation that was brought to you. your statement is contradicting.

    • @FuglyStick
      @FuglyStick 7 лет назад +26

      "I believe no gun owner wants confrontation"
      Then you aren't very familiar with the youTube "operator" community. A distressing percentage of the community is cloaking masturbatory "justice" fantasy in the guise of "safety." They do not speak for gun owners, and are not representative of gun owners. "Protection" may lead to lethal response, but that's different than the mentality of "eliminating bad guys." The distinction isn't always clear, but it is there.

    • @ronbloomberg

      FuglyStick
      But if you rack your slide and yell "Who's there?"
      the bad guy will now be the one doing the ambushing!
      When an intruder is in your home in the middle of the night you don't go searching all thru your house yelling "who's there?" He will simply hide behind the couch and wait to pick you off like JFK.
      I any of you keyboard commandos would have ever taken a course in home/self defense you would know that.

    Best video explaining proper shotgun readiness I have seen. Also love how you get right into the meat of the video. A+++. In addition to the storage condition you explained, we also placed a wrap of some paper tape around the action (fore-end and barrel.) When doing your pre-shift equipment inspection we would check the condition of the tape - if broken we would swap out the shotgun for another in our armory.

    As a retired detective and a NRA home defense coach, your suggestions and ideas are spot on. Let me add one thought. Racking a round loudly for a suspect to see or hear will reduce your chances of having to fire by 80 percent. Every time I racked a round in the field the suspect stopped dead in his tracts. And yes never ever store your shotgun with a round loaded. Experience has shown that your going to rack your shotgun for peace of mind. And now your down one round but your brain believes you have four or seven rounds loaded.

Without any safety concerns, family concerns, and or reasoning, other than racking the weapon would alarm and give away his position.

    The 870P in my patrol car is 24 years old. 17 years ago we cut the bbl of our shotguns to 14 inches and added Wilson plus one extensions and springs. They’re been loaded 24/7 with 5 rounds in the magazine for 17 years. The magazine spring still works great. If you’re worried they’re less than ten bucks. Replace them every few years. Down loading to 4 rounds is foolish. For us cruiser ready is an empty chamber with the slide locked and the safety on.

      A J Sounds like they are department owned. My agency had similar setups (although I carried a personally owned Wilson Combat 870 18”). If the department did it, and they are the possessor, it would not be illegal. If he personally did it, as long as the ATF tax stamp is paid and approved, it also would be perfectly legal. Considering he said “we,” those are probably department modified and issued shotguns.

      Lucky Gunner Ammo great video and common sense. In the U.K, you need a license to have shotguns. Those who have licenses have to keep the guns locked away - 6 month jail sentence if they don't. So understanding the very different system in the US, I was so impressed. Too many have a round in the chamber - and don't appreciate the safety issue when dropped or knocked - particularly if you have kids. Great video. Thank you.

Note worthy: I have no kids in my home, it's my wife and I only, she shoots, too and she understands going after the bad guys is my job. • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  7 лет назад +1

      Glad you found it helpful. To be fair, I wouldn't say shotguns can go off "easily," but the safety mechanism is not as fool-proof as is commonly believed. Generally, I think it's a bad idea to have any gun cocked with a loaded chamber if it's not securely locked up. And even for a gun that's stored in some kind of container, there is always a risk of inadvertently pressing the trigger or catching it on something when retrieving it. Personally, my rule is that no gun in my home is chambered unless it's in my hands, on my person, or the trigger is covered by a holster and it's locked up.

    I enjoyed your video and totally agree with your philosophy. There is some truth as to why police (specialty units excepted) carry pump shotguns (audible deterrent when going into full battery), but that's the "police", not the home defender. For the home defender, that's a misapplication of purpose. That being said, I think one should give an intruder EVERY opportunity to leave before engaging in live fire (racking the shotgun, verbal challenges, throwing the cat at them, etc.) and let them know you're in your home, and you're defending it. Plus, as you stated, it prevents accidents. The goal is to protect yourself and preserve life. If a "bad guy" won't let you accomplish both of those, protecting yourself wins the debate. There's not a domestic situation that can't be resolved with the assistance of a 12 ga. shotgun. And by the way, I love that 14", Magpul dressed 870. Happy trails, tight groups and safety first.

    home defense shotgun users be advised, you may get "shell compression" if you keep the same shells loaded in the magazine tube for too a long time. They WILL become squashed down and oversized, and unable to cycle thru the action. This is especially important if you're using imported shotgun shells. In my experience the clear hulls with steel base are typically the weakest. S&B and Wolf have the softest and weakest plastic hulls of the ones I've handled

    ive read some articles stating racking the slide may cause the intruder to not only know where you are, but in, id say extreme circumstances, cause them to open fire in the direction of the sound or rush towards it, if the person is under the influence, etc. it does kind of make sense, especially depending on the size of your home, where they enter compared to where you are. im on the fence but again its just what ive read elsewhere

    • @mwilcof9332
      @mwilcof9332 7 лет назад +4

      Completely agree. Not only are you giving away your position and subjecting yourself to fire, you're giving away the type of firearm you have, and the approximate number of rounds. I prefer fully utilizing the element of surprise, and unleashing fury on the unsuspecting intruder. The surprise element also gives you a second to identify the target before engaging, time you may not have if the intruder knows your position and is ready to fully engage you. No warnings are given out at my house. ID the target, neutralize.

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 7 лет назад +9

      Did you not listen to why that might be a bad idea? More likely than not, you are going to be shooting at somebody who lives at your house who just went up to get some water or something. You're not in a war zone. Not every un-IDed person is trying to kill you. Not every potential intruder is a highly-trained spec ops super soldier looking to murder you and your family as if you have a price on your head. Chances are, it's a dumbass who barely knows how to use a gun thinking he can make a quick buck...assuming he has a gun at all.
      You don't just get up from bed from hearing a noise, grab your shotgun, and then shoot at whomever might be downstairs. You're more likely going to be killing someone you don't want to than an actual intruder that way.
      And funny thing is, a lot of these "tacticool commandos" that have your type of mindset also tend to be the types of people who insist on a revolver for carry because "carrying 15 rounds is being paranoid; you're not in a war zone bro!"

      This is why you ask them to identify themselves, if they live in or are supposed to be there they probably know you have a gun and will likely know by the tone of your voice that you believe them to possibly be an intruder. If you hear no reply this indicates the chances of it being a family member or friend are low. In low light conditions this is more critical and this is where a good flashlight can save lives, either by allowing you to identify an intruder or a family member faster so you can proceed with the appropriate action.

    I have a Mossberg JIC M500CRUISER. It's a legal short barrel (18-1/2 inch and overall length 28") 12 ga shotgun with a pistol grip. As you pointed out, I do keep 1 less in the magazine. I also pulled the trigger on an empty chamber so the slide can be operated. If I didn't I have to press the slide release tab to rack the slide.

    I grew up with many deer rifles and one pistol in the household in addition I knew guns can go off despite a safety engaged and internaI safeties are what keeps weapons drop safe. But I never knew shotguns were sensitive to drops. Good to know after years of having one loaded in the corner of my room within arms reach from my bedside. I always kept it leaned up un the corner to prevent it from falling. The only way it would fall is if an earthquake shook the house or someone made it fall.

    I would also suggest to use mini shell (1.75") ammunition for home defense, your capacity will increase considerably and you can have 12 spare on the side saddle.

    Springs are weakened by repeated cycles of compression and decompression, not by sitting compressed for long periods of time.

      So you cheat yourself out of two rounds?
      You're already losing a round with the empty chamber.
      I'd rather change the springs yearly, than cheat myself out of another round.

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  8 лет назад +3

      +orda woodward Changing the springs every year or two is a good alternative, but not something most shotgun owners are realistically going to do. I am not bothered by the capacity issue. I don't view the shotgun as a first line of defense... that role is for the handgun, which is almost always within arm's reach in my home. The shotgun is for "bunker defense" when there is prior warning of a threat that is potentially near but not imminent. In those cases, it's not an issue to take the extra 2 seconds to chamber and top off the shotgun. Generally, if I have time to retrieve the shotgun from where it is stored, I have time to top it off.

      Lucky Gunner Ammo I have to agree, for your philosophy of use, this is a good way to store your shotgun. And as far as your average gun owner, they probably won't change their springs regularly.
      I personally use my shotgun as a first line of defense, and I keep it loaded with one in the chamber (8+1) And I do have spare springs for all my defensive weapons, although I don't change them yearly as I suggested before, but rather after X amount of rounds/training.
      Anyhow, I just found your channel, and I look forward to watching more and figuring out what your channel is all about. Thanks :)

    Best darn advice I have seen in decades on a Home defense shotgun. All the Macho crap that floats around out there about being so tactic cool and having a round in the chamber and the nonsense of being told that racking the slide is a no no. For God sake, It takes about less than a second to rack the slide. and if anyone breaks in, they are already sounded a heck of a lot of noise from the alarm system. Over the years, and being from the South where we use shotguns for hunting all the time, There have been numerous times when a shotgun was dropped and went off. A man recently killed not long ago when the shotgun was resting on a car and fell over and discharged. YES, CRUISER READY.

    Not a study, but a couple of data points. We kept a pair of 18 inch barreled Mossberg 500s loaded with full mags sitting at ready points for roughly 10 years. These two only got shot about 30 rounds each in those 10 years. Both magazine springs weakened to the point that they would not push the last shell far enough out to cycle unless the gun was pointed up. You can throw all the educated expert "facts" out that you want. I will rely on what I have experienced personally on this one. We still keep them loaded full, but will but check and replace the springs as needed.

    Actually a spring looses compression when its compressed and uncompressed over and over not when it simply remains compressed. So you can leave fully loaded just fine.

      Papa Cap interestingly enough, I almost think a double barrel is better IMO. The thought of racking in the quiet of the night with an intruder inside is a no go for me. Leaving a shell chambered also seems like a no go for me. With a double barrel... seems like there wouldn’t be those problems? I don’t own a shotgun yet but I would have to go with pump only for versatility sake
