Tyler’s lyrics are chocked full of metaphors, but this song was inspired by his car radio getting stolen! Welcome to the TØP rabbit hole-you’re really gonna enjoy this one😎
Thanks!!! I’m excited to dive down it!!!
@@AxiomReviewsChannel you are definitely off on your analysis. Good try though.
I love your theory about how the fans lift him up and help him - yes, they are extremely intricate with their videos and music, everything pretty much has a meaning, a reason for doing it
Thanks!!! That’s just what came to mind seeing them!
Twenty One Pilots, or TØP for short, was started by Tyler Joseph with 2 of his friends in Columbus Ohio. They released one album, which was self titled, in 2009 before the other 2 left because of family and other personal reasons. Tyler and Josh Dun had met at a venue after being introduced to each other by one of the original members of the band, and they quickly connected and became best friends, and Josh was the first one Tyler asked to fill the spots left by the other two members. It's been just the two of them ever since.
Their first album together, Regional at Best, released in 2011, is not available anywhere except RUclips, as after it was released they signed with the record label Fueled By Ramen and redid about half the songs from that album for their next one Vessel, which was released in 2013. This is when they first started to gain some real traction outside of Ohio. The album focuses a lot on themes of mental health, suicide, depression, death, and how day and night can affect our moods. It's my favorite album of all time, with Migraine being my favorite song ever.
In 2015 came the big blowup in popularity with their album Blurryface. Stressed Out reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won them a Grammy, and Ride hit #5. They went on 2 worldwide tours for this album. Blurryface is a character Tyler created to represent all of his depression, insecurities, anxieties, etc. and each song deals with some of those things. Their big tour ended in 2016 and the guys went on a very long hiatus, with no social media presence, no new music, etc.
Before the hiatus they were asked by DC to make a song for the Suicide Squad movie, and they came up with Heathens, which is Tyler kind of roasting his fans, who were pretty toxic at the time. It fits right along with the Suicide Squad movie though. Tyler said that he submitted this and if the studio didn't like it then they would have just put this on their next album. This hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 I believe and I think they were nominated for a Grammy for it.
In 2018 they released their album Trench. It's a concept album about a place called Trench with a city called Dema, where bishops control the people and make them feel depressed. The album is about trying to escape Dema, which is a metaphor for beating our own thoughts. It continues the story of Blurryface as well.
The guys also released 2 singles in 2020 not connected to any albums: Level of Concern, a song about the state of the world and quarantine, and Christmas Saves the Year, which is exactly what it sounds like.
They just released their 6th album, Scaled and Icy, which is both short for "scaled back and isolated", referring to the quarantine setting in which they wrote it, and an anagram for "Clancy is dead", Clancy being a character they established in the Trench era.
None of their songs sound even remotely the same. I believe Tyler is one of the greatest lyricists and songwriters of all time, what he can do with words is amazing
I love migraine so much
Thank you. I’m new to TOP and appreciated this comment. 👍
1000% AGREE
I only knew half of that (fell off after hiatus) but that’s cool
You are insanely good at paying attention and interpretation. Just thank you. Hope you do their new stuff, the journey has much more to it.
Thank you! I am working my way forward in their music so I’ll eventually get to their newer stuff 😊
I love what you said about his hair and also how his fans are 'picking him up'. Good eye..
Thank you!!!
I suffer from moderate/severe OCD, and this song is what I use to explain to people what it's like. It's not all hand washing and symmetry, it's mostly horrible intrusive thoughts. Music is a distraction for a lot of us. I'd like to get "Quiet is Violent" as a tattoo at some point. Also, RIP to the cameraman who got swallowed by that crowd.
I love love LOVE your point about the crowd taking him back where he needs to be
I had heard a few of their radio hits years ago and liked it but didn’t think much about it until I went to their concert with my daughter. Wow, I left there that night in awe and quickly became an obsessive fangirl. That’s how good their live shows are. Love watching these TOP reactions!
Glad to see you falling down the twenty-one pilots rabbit hole. I really fell down the hole at the beginning of the pandemic...they are now one of my favorites. You should go back and watch this video and pay close attention to the crowd. They threw in a "Where's Waldo" in there...there is truly a guy dressed in full Waldo garb in the crowd. It is a serious song, very emotional, but they also have a sense of humor.
Awesome!! Really looking forward to this!
Here’s a quick unofficial list for the first part of the journey (from Vessel and self-titled), since you already did Ode to Sleep and Car Radio:
Fall Away (live with Dr. Blum)
Taxi Cab
Addict with a Pen (live room performance)
Holding on to You (video)
Migraine (from the live room)
Fake You Out
Guns for Hands (video)
Trees (must do a live version)
Thank you!!!
@@AxiomReviewsChannel this is a great list. I'd copy and paste it somewhere mate
Yeah that line he says ""sometimes quiet is violent"" is such a good line. What the song's all about. Without the car radio, you're not distracted and your mind runs away full of thought after thought after thought...pure torture. Same thing with television. I go to bed with the tv on because the silence drives me nuts and i overthink and can't go to sleep!!... also notice he said ""i can pull the steering wheel"" you'll find so so so many TOP songs suicide, a lot of suicide. It's their platform. Their slogan is ""stay alive"" and at concerts fans scream out ""Stay Alive!!""

Yep, Shane’s list is the gold standard.
Appreciate this very much being new to TOP. You obviously put in some time to write this out. It’s very helpful ❤️
I agree with most of it...I prefer the "Pet Cheetah" live version. I do love that you included the "Goner" live version...that is the best!
Awesome! Spot on!! Was giving you some well deserved claps there for the 'crowd surfing' observations - nail on the head! The fans and the music really , quite literally, support him. When he performs Live he finds various ways to show how the fans hold him and Josh up because it's such a symbiotic relationship. Loved that you caught how his hair's back and it's silent again at the end - as the cycle starts over. Car Radio is a really deep expression about how we all need those positive influences to keep battling fears. Tyler's music is so layered, so poignant, you're going to love this journey! Lots to discover. And btw, TOP credits their fans as being the 3rd member of their band. "We're Twenty One Pilots and so are you!" Here for the ride!! 💛💛👏👏💛💛
" “Car Radio” is an introspective song that recalls an event lead singer Tyler Joseph experienced during college where his car radio was stolen. It led him to ponder where the mind takes people when all they are left with is silence.
Tyler describes this silence as something that can sometimes be seen as violent, an irony displayed musically as “Car Radio” moves from its brooding intro to the explosive climax heard during the bridge. Its energy level has made it both a band- and fan-favorite at twenty one pilots’ shows." Source: Genius.
Also some insight, Tyler suffered from seasonal depression and anxiety when he was a teenager. (The reason he started to make music, was the issues with his mental health and Christianity, the music became his outlet.) *he may still suffer in some amount but it is not my business. (Josh has had anxiety too, so Tyler made him talk in the interviews and such, giving him support if needed)
When he was left alone with his thoughts, it was scary and took him into dark places in his mind. "I could pull the steering wheel"... He was also suicidal and raised to be a Christian, battling also with his faith (he needed to figure out things by himself, he is not the kind of person who just accepts things without questioning them at first).
Touring is important to TOP, they like to connect with their fans on a different level. Tyler also keeps in mind that the songs are for live shows & for the fans, when he is producing them.
Here in 2022, finally going to be going to a TOP concert on September 9th in K.C.!
I love your interpretation of car radio. The music is everything to Tyler. Going back to playing shows,he talked about how difficult it was without the fans and the shows.
For me, in car radio, faith is choosing life, and sleep is choosing death.
Great video! Seeing them 3 times this week in Denver starting TONIGHT! 🤘
Oh my ..tonights venue is so small.. super lucky, have fun!!!!
How the heck did you get tickets to three shows?? I'll be there Sat. at Ball Arena! 🎉
@@biodorkus my wife is the luckiest person on the planet and, holy crap, last night was the best show I've ever seen 🤯
@@smolove4005 oh I found someone streaming it.. just WOW what a song lineup for the smaller ones. Simply amazing.
So excited for you to hear more tøp
I’m excited!!!
Their concerts are amazing. I've been to Emotional Roadshow (2016) Bandito (2019) in SLC. Then this last weekend we flew to Denver to catch them at the Ball Arena for The Takeøver tour. They are so worth seeing a few times in your life☺
I’m definitely going to be going to see them soon!!! 😊😊
@@AxiomReviewsChannel they always give love to folks in seats. One year Tyler popped up in the nosebleeds during fairly local. But the pit is so much fun and they usually incorporate 2 stages so the chances of getting front row even for a few songs is higher. Enjoy the show when you go😊😁
I love your interpretation in the beginning of the the car radio being your “flow” or the beat of your own tune in respect to how you live life and how it sucks when someone/something takes that away. I love that cause I always interpreted the song to be about Tyler losing the distractions of life that keeps him from facing existential crisis. I think that’s still accurate but your interpretation gives it a whole new meaning I like and I really need at this point in my life
So happy you’re going to do a lot of TOP you’re very thorough, love it ❤️😊 can’t wait!!!!
Heavy dirty soul is another deep one.
That one is coming really soon!!
I second this! 💗
@@AxiomReviewsChannel Make sure to do it before Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, and Levitate (in that order)! 🙌
a great song for you to check out next (if you haven't) is Migraine. it has a great lyrics for you to dissect ;)
That one is coming soon!! 😊
Wow first time I learned something from a reactor. The crowd surfing breakdown was amazing.
I just saw them this weekend in LA and Car Radio was the best performance of all time! I cried
That was wild... deep too!! I need to watch the video a few times I think. GREAT to see ya back!
Thanks! :) I'm glad to be back!!!
Yeah! I’m so excited for you to get to this.
I absolutely loved this song! Excited for more coming!!
They are going to be in L. A. Check the tour dates.
Oh sweet! I’ll check it out!!!
His fans picked him up! OMG! I love that!
My guy!! I've been waiting on you to get back to tøp. Your reactions are the best. Looking forward to the next one!

I usually watch reactions for entertainment. You also brought me knowledge and insight. Thank you sir😊👍
Man I just found your channel and your reactions and you just get it. Great thoughts and great reaction. I’ve seen TØP live 14 times and every single show is always one of the best shows I’ve ever been too. This music is alive and is meant to be experienced live.
What I love about this song is how it methodically shows what the "car radio" does. It's build to make you feel uncomfortable, to think, to share the discomfort of silence. But then when the beat drops, you lose those thoughts - the music takes you somewhere where you don't think of anything, just enjoy the beat, feel hypnotized, feel easy. Even the lyrics go away, you don't need to remember any lyrics or even to speak English, you can take part so easily that there's no challenge. In a way it's like dreaming, you just throw yourself into it, and actually it's even better with eyes closed. And then the screams remind you of the silence, telling you that what you feel, where you're at is safe. And then the ending makes you feel thankful to have that space, to have that escape from any struggles. Like you said, it's like the opposite of Ode to Sleep, but basically it's the same - escaping but by being alive.
This is going to be great! Twenty One Pilots are the best. I love watching people discover TOP!
I love it so far!!! My reaction to Heavydirtysoul is live tomorrow morning!
It’s ok to have a strong emotion lol
Take yourself down a notch 🤣😆
His bars are timeless
You asked for list. I don't have (there is not like nf has) but do recommend going in album order, starting with the older and progress to newer. There is definite progression evolution to their music and lyrics that is complex. So best to get to know tyler at beginning and learn the changes. ESPECIALLY because last 3 albums were concept albums with very complex rich storyline that will be hard to understand if you don't learn earlier concepts.
Ohh mannn super excited to see you back on twenty one pilots.. this is one of my favorites.. but I really love so many of them. But the lyrics do hit hard. ( already subscribed plus a member ) ❤️
Hey Sherry!!! 😊 more TOP is coming soon!!! I’m going down that rabbit hole!!!
@@AxiomReviewsChannel thanks!! Looking forward to more..it’s a deep hole!
Great reaction!! Love the channel!!
Thanks!!!
Daaaammmm. Duuude....super impressed how well you get TOP this early in the game. I know you've done a bunch more. Great stuff. Keep it up. Thanks for the time and energy. Us clique peeps love to watch another person become a fan!!! Doesn't get better than twenty- one pilots 💙💖
Dude You are the most Smart guy i ever seen reacting, You really do a reaction and a Great alanize (sorry for My English i'm in practice)
Thank you!! I’m glad you enjoy the two cents I bring to the table!
Loved this reaction and how deep you dive into the lyrics and the video, hope you check out more of their videos. The song was actually inspired by when Tylers car radio was stolen and he couldn't afford to replace it and without the distraction of music his mind went to some dark places. Interesting to hear your thoughts comparing this to Ode to Sleep, Tyler often uses sleep as a metaphor for battling dark thoughts because rather than having a break from them at night he has often talked about having difficulty sleeping because that's when his mind starts to spiral ('I'll stay awake, cos the darks not taking prisoners tonight'), so being awake is usually a metaphor in his music for survival and having a break from his 'demons', while sleep tends to be a metaphor for battling depression ect and something that needs to be conquered.
Very cool reaction! Subscribed!!!
Nice reaction! You should react to the trilogy of jumpsuit levitate and nico and the niners
And Holding on to you/ trees - live at fox theater
Awesome reaction… glad you r going down this rabbit hole
Thanks! I’m excited!!!
@@AxiomReviewsChannel I’m actually going to their Denver show at ball arena this Saturday!!!!
@@AxiomReviewsChannel think there is a Los Angeles show this tour
They are actually in LA next week for their Takeover Tour!
A few songs i'd recommend doing early in the journey:
- Migraine (do the music video or lyric video - the live version is harder to understand lyrics)
- Holding On To You
- Trees (Live from Fox Theater)
- Ride
- Heavydirtysoul
The car is the body! The fear is of bearth and died.
Oh man, I think I’m going to enjoy this journey as much as you are going to, can’t wait!!
Thanks!! I’m pumped for it!!!
Yesssss
Hope you will do the Fox Theater version of this one too. This song centers me.
If you love the live inserts in their videos you're gonna love Trees...Live at the Fox Theater...it's the song they end their shows with...super high energy fun!!!
You nailed it!
Wooow....I have thought of it that way....thank you so much :)
Never thought* lol
Great Reaction to my favorite band! I check everyday for reactions to TWENTY ONE PILOTS!!! PS TOP came 1st. OTHERS ARE COPYCATS! Thanks for joining the Skeleton Clique!!
Thanks!!! I’m excited to take this journey!!!
A metalband that you might like is "beast in black" a good song to start listening to is "blind and frozen".
Great reactionanalysis as allways
You should definitely react to guns for hands next
That is on the list and coming soon
I think his car is his life, his radio is his distraction as well as his inspiration. His car radio was stolen by the industry and possibly even his fans. They both want them to stay in their lane. The mask is his blurry face, the face he puts on for the industry, for the fans. At the end of the day he starts right back where he started, left with his heavy dirty soul
Great insight!
Thank you!!
Youre top journey should def start with ode to sleep music video. Great intro track and vid. Welcome to the clique
I did that reaction already lol
In other comments they have already explained to you about Twenty One Pilots, Tyler or what the song means but I also want to add the similarity with NF, the point is that Twenty One Pilots came first, they are older than NF but obviously I am not saying that NF has been copied from TØP only they both have those similarities and also NF is a very fan of Twenty One Pilots, they have seen images of him in concerts he has talked about them in an interview and even said that he would love to collaborate with them, I know they are an inspiration for him and I hope they can collaborate, both Twenty One Pilots and NF do not collaborate but it would be epic to see one between them!
*sorry if my English is not very good!*
I would LOVE if NF did a collab with TØP!!!!
I would kinda like to think his car radio is gone, not a metaphor, he can no longer be distracted listening to music but he is stuck with his thoughts.
I'm so excited for that journey ! Btw fun fact, Tyler really got his car radio stolen 😂
Lol that’s bad but hilarious! 😂😂
LA. Alter Ego. Jan 202.
You gotta react to “Hold Me Back” by KB👀📈
Please do more TØP soon
Ohhhh more TØP is coming Brandi! 😊😊😊 I told everyone that after my NF journey, I was going to deep dive into TØP, so I’m diving down that rabbit hole now!! 😊😊

Thanks!
someone actually stole his car radio
But did you spot Waldo in the crowd? lol
Wait what?!?! Okay I gotta watch it again!!
Just a quick question... when are you going to react to Dax featuring Tom MacDonald propaganda they released it last Friday?? Great reactions otherwise have a great day
I’ll react to it soon, I already watched it on Friday. But I couldn’t post anything for a few days because I was in a little dispute with YT lol
Man what happened to your TOP journey! You just scratched surface! Do MY BLOOD, Jumpsuit, Chlorine, Nico and the niners, smithereens, message man, the outside, lane boy..that will do for now
Dude, they literally took his car radio 😂 the song is super deep, but nobody stole his internal music. And holy shit man there’s nothing to react to when you’re pausing it every 5 seconds in the middle of the most important parts of the video. Lastly, please stop talking about NF
I guess Brittany spears went through some traumatic experience bc she shaved her head
