I bought a Mach e in Dec of 22'. Paid MSRP and got the $7500. That was a good buy for me in Dec. Now I think there are only 4 choices. Model 3 Performance (3 SR still not bad with $3750 off & 3 LR not available) and any Model Y. That's it!! I really like my Mach e, but if I were buying today with all the new rules and pricing, I'd go Model Y LR. We are still a few years away from CCS infrastructure being close to Tesla super chargers. If your looking for an inexpensive commuter car that will not be taken on a road trip I understand looking at a Bolt or base ID.4. But for a no compromise vehicle, Tesla is the only game in town IMO.
You got fucked buying an EV.
I’d only consider a Tesla product due to ease of charging while on extended trips.
Good list. It's exactly what mine would have been. I recently bought an EV. My requirements were that it had to be a hatchback, and it had to be under $45k (to qualify for state incentives). That left two choices, the Chevy Bolt/Bolt EUV and the VW ID4. I like the Bolt quite a bit, but it wasn't big enough for my needs. So, I went with the ID4, which I'm very happy with so far. Regarding the ID4 software, I've had no problems. Besides, I have Android Auto on the screen 99% of the time.
And the towing capacity of the ID4 is quite good as well, at 2,700 lbs here in Canada
Do me a favor and google "joe rogan cobalt" a 14 minute youtube. It is by the most knowledgeable person on modern slavery and sex trafficking. He discusses cobalt mining for EV batteries. It is horrifying.
Road trips! I bought a Model 3 in 2019 because no non-Tesla was going to get me from California to Iowa without big worries, and maybe some unplanned stayovers. Unfortunately, for interstate travel it hasn't gotten that much better in the great beautiful hinterlands. Public DC chargers are rolling out, but it seems opportunistic and lacking strategy. I don't know if you can get through Wyoming on I-80 on public DC chargers even now. Tesla had this all nailed years ago - all the major interstates E-W and N-S, strategically covered and getting denser. I'm still a Tesla fan but I do wish I had a choice, and with the charging situation I don't feel that will be the case for a few years at least.
I have a 2022 Bolt EUV and I love it. I use it as a city car, my years of wander lust are over unless one of my kids wants to do the driving, then I'm all in.
Model 3 standard is fantastic. Love it. Rebate until the 18th
I own a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance as of last month. I love it. If I were to pick 5 EVs regardless if they qualified for the $7,500 tax credit, my picks would be 1. Genesis GV60 2. Polestar 2 3. Kia EV9 4. Chevy Bolt 5. Ford Mach-E My bonus pick is a Mercedes EQS. Crazy expensive, but a very nice vehicle. I really like Rivian. I hope they are around making vehicles 5 or 10 years from now, but unlikely. Lucid... same boat as Rivian. I don't see them surviving. Most Japanese companies will go under. Stellantis or some of Stellantis. It should get really interesting in the automotive space in the next 10 years. VW since they can't do proper software updates... they don't make my list.
I'm seeing a lot of Rivians here in the Denver, Colorado metro area lately. There are loads of Teslas, of course, but plenty of other brands too. I've been keeping an eye on "alt" cars since the early oughts when hybrids first hit the scene, and it's really great to see an increasing mix of evs on the roads here in Colorado. In the last couple of years EVs have become increasingly noticeable. Long may it continue.
Thought you were going to say S, 3, X, Y and S Plaid 😂
That's the problem, people think they are going to just take off $7500 from the sticker price. That's not how it works. You still pay full price at purchase. You have to apply for the rebate off your taxable income when you file your taxes.
Tesla Model Y 1st choice, Model 3 2nd choice, depends on your needs, preferences, finances. :)
Chevy Equinox EV 3rd choice
Buying an EV you are still very much an early adopter. I will stay on the fence until I see what cost of ownership REALLY entails with EVs over long term
Not really - many of us have been driving EVs for 8 to 10 years now. You’re late to the party!
Hope you are tracking ICE expenses while you wait: gasoline/sniezel ain't cheap.
At those prices, combined with uncertainty over battery replacement prices, future EV taxes to replace fuel taxes, future electricity prices and a tendency for the batteries to catch on fire (worse if it happens inside your home's garage). EV manufacturers can take their vehicles and jump off a bridge. Where are the under $20,000 EVs? Because you can certainly get very decent combustion cars for under that price.
Worse, if you think of adding solar panels to your home to cut costs and help the environment... think again, it will double your home insurance premiums.
So, sorry, but for my next car I will stick with a low cost plug in hybrid or regular high mileage hybrid. I like the IDEA of a full EV but frankly I can't afford them and the risks due to a changing market are just too high.
Besides that, most electricity in the US comes from coal and gas, so switching to an EV will have little impact on the environment at this time.
The electric grid cannot handle an EV in every home. There will be lots of blackouts. PHEV is an excellent choice for this transitional period.
Great review Sam ! The challenge in the USA are
- Either you have to wait for an ice age to their your order (it's getting loads better)
- High prices (MSRP) , Price Changes on quaterly basis. "ahum."
- Mark Ups with no value add imposed by dealerships
- Higher interest rates on sales or lease.
If you consider the Bolt and Bolt EUV to be the same car an argument could be made that the Tesla model 3 and Y are the same car.
Really like the VW but no OTA capability is big con. Agree that Lightning is best truck presently.
Kits….ev kits for your favorite pickup, car, or van. I think there is a future in ev conversion, if it could be standardised into common components for ease of maintainance or repair.
I would love to convert my 1998 Toyota Camry to electric once it becomes financially possible.
Sucks that Aptera and other unique vehicles (ie Nimbus One S) got snubbed by the IRA changes. The original version had a smaller $2000 credit for "electric motorcycles" - far from ideal but something. This garbage legislation is the reason these more correctly sized vehicles have struggled to get investment funding to reach production as scheduled. The IRA says they want new efficient transportation but the most innovative options are forced to try to enter the market with a huge artificial disadvantage.
Agreed, Aptera not qualifying cause it has 3 wheels is bull. If it turns out to be safer than most cars when they do the safety tests I want them all to eat their hats.
Go Aptera go. Looks likè they are working our minimal funding and entering production.
It's really interesting to watch how different incentive programs change the viable vehicles. For instance, in Canada you can get up to 10K off of a passenger car if the base model is less than 55K and the model you buy is less than 65k. This makes the Ioniq 6 AWD eligible and the Model 3 RWD is, but not the performance.
After taxes and rebates the Ioniq 6 AWD with the 18" wheels will be 56698, and the Model 3 Performance ends up at 83938. In the RWD only models they are both 53.2K.
So if you are OK with RWD only the Model 3 is the obvious choice, if you want AWD you'd be paying 27k more for the model 3.
I love my Bolt EUV. Fun to drive, good mileage and nice features. Only downside is charging time but what do you expect for a hatchback under $30k? I’m happy not to pay for gasoline and oil changes
Rivian lost $5.2 BILLION dollars last year. I think you should let people know before you recommend a manufacturer that could actually go under.
That is why Sam did recommend the Ford Lightning over the Rivian…
Rivian expects to be profitable by next year and release a lower cost “R2” vehicle the year after that. Rivian isn’t going anywhere.
VW is $200 billion in debt so maybe we should not be buying anything from them either
Every startup could potentially go out of business even established companies Just look at bby? Tesla could of went out of business I guess nobody back in the day should of bought a tesla??
How is Ford safer? Every Ford I’ve owned has been a reliability nightmare. Just go to a Ford in the morning and the service line is out to the street.
Seen several reviews of the ford lightning truck, each confirming horrific range and charging problems
I'm educating my wife on EVs. Oddly enough, once she realized all the benefits, reduced mainentance, no oil changes, no filters, one pedal driving she is all in. She wants the following EVs. Tesla Model 2, Aptera or the MG4. Purchase date is 2025 so no worries. Not sure if I convinced her or she just has a thing for Vikings--most likely the latter but I win!
Gonna be lots more choices by 2025, I hope!
If one is retired then the tax credit can not be used. Get off the free ride train. It doesn’t exist for retirees.
I’m sorta half in that boat! I only make enough to get about half of the tax credit.
I'm retired, I used 401k money. Took out enough to get the credit, rolled the rest into a traditional IRA.
Sign over the bar reads: "NO GEEZERS!"
I love my Bolt EUV Lt; is it perfect? No. It is for everybody? No. But for the money, to me there was nothing to match it.
Model 3 FWD Long Range can't be ordered in North America
That was a huge disappointment when I went to buy one
100%. My choice is Bolt, but you might have a battle trying to avoid dealer BS fees and markups.
My top 5
1) Model Y
2) Model 3
3) VW ID4
4) Lyriq
5) Ford Lightning
Model Y sells for a really good price right now in the USA. Around 43k after tax credit.
2- Chevy Equinox EV 2024
You can’t make a m.s.r.p. comparison without mentioning added Dealer markups in us market. Chevy Bolts are on average $34 k for the cheapest version in south west region USA
$34k is in Tesla 3 territory this week.
@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck and 34 grand is 30 grand over priced
Why California landlord don’t provide facility for charging electric vehicles to their tenants?
Great vid, really appreciate your breakdown and not pussyfooting with it. Thanks.
I would still go with the Leaf as a local commuter, charging at home.
Used, maybe. We have owned 4.
when you said yes, yes yes, I thought you meant you recommend a buy. Mary's truth bar is pretty elastic, so don't depend on Mary.
To me and a half of the population, a $50.000 car before taxes means TWO YEARS of salary alone. Figure in housing? Nah! Not a possibility. We’re stuck with guzzlers…😢
Overall I think the “tipping point” may be here? These new car prices in the USA are unreal. I can only assume similar spec ICE cars are way cheaper? Perhaps a comparison would be the final nail in the coffin? Here in the UK, a long-range model y is nearly $12,000 cheaper than it was this time last year. This move is forcing everyone else to slash prices too. But don’t wait too long because I can see prices only going one way from here?!
Don't forget you can use this year or previous year income to qualify. So if you are going to make more than the limit this year but didn't last year you can still get the $7500 credit.
I have a 2021 VW ID4 and have had the software update. In 2020 when I ordered it, the Bolt had a self igniting battery and the Tesla was more expensive with no tax credits. For the time I made my optimum choice.
The problem is, is that these electric cars cost a lot and these cars have not been on the road long so there’s really no data to support the claim that these cars will last a while, so when a company says there electric car will last 100,000 miles, don’t blindly believe it, these cars are new and will have many problems. My advice would be just to buy a used car. And skip the electric cars for a while.
I'll probably eventually buy a Lyriq EV or Blazer EV
5? There is only 2 atm, Tesla or Ioniq 6. If you dont give a shit about battery range, efficiency or charging speeds, you can buy whatever you want.
Hey viking when will u talk about byd's 5 new tech releases? U9 U8 DiSense DiSus and new e4 platform?
Guess you will i hope
When will they produce a million of one model? Production is important. Having 60 different models is not.
My Top 5 are all Teslas. No one else has the software capability to continuously improve the vehicle. No one else has the quality control that Tesla has. No one else has the combined range and fast charging network that Tesla has. No one else has the top safety ratings that Tesla has. No one else has the potential for actual fully automated driving that Tesla has. Basically, Tesla is worth any extra dollars it takes to buy one, since it's an investment in your future, your children's future and your grandchildrens' future, and everyone else's future, all at the same time, unlike any non-Tesla EV or any non-EV!
Would love to replace my Grand Caravan with an EV by 2025. Where is the EV mini van? Even the etransit has no passenger configuration.
I already get all the tax breaks I need. The tax incentive for an EV is worthless to me.
That IRA only works if you owe the federal govt money, it's a credit not a rebate so if you owe $15 that's all you get for the car that qualifies
You know you can’t order the model 3 long range😳😳
Do not buy a Lightening or other EV pickup. They have no towing power. For every 2 hours towing, one hour of charging. How proposterous.!
Hey, do an up to date video on Canoo, please.
The photo over your left shoulder is AWESOME!
An ID.4 owner here. We had the car for over a year without any issues or complaints. The "software issues" are blown out of proportion. I would recommend ID.4 as first EV to most people.
There is only one car to buy and that is a Tesla it is the only car that is future proof.
EV6 GT all the way.
Why is a broadcaster from Australia so obsessed with America? What about the rest of the world? Maybe they pretty much have no interest.
My biggest choice. Hmmmm. All US dollars i assume...
You keep saying IRA but its IRS. Internal Revenue Service.
I've only recently started really considering that i could get a car that qualifies for the tax credit, and I'm mostly considering the Bolt (not sure which version). Its just so darn cheap. But if my car lasts long enough, maybe the Tesla 2 or whatever? Oh, or the Fisker PEAR - what do you think, will that thing ever actually show up?! (I originally wanted a Kona EV but I dont like the new model, I find it ugly)
oh or possibly the mini - because i hear its fun to drive! I'm also considering used evs
Inflation reduction act = IRA
The IRA he's talking about is the Inflation Reduction Act, which among other things has incentives for buying EV's
@@Mazlem ahh, i hadnt seen it referred to that way before
You're being disingenuous, aren't you the one that supports LFP above all else. You should be recommending SR. Lifetime costs are more important and those batteries have double the life and don't incinerate you when they go wrong
Governments should not be interfering with a free market economy. They can and should determine air quality objectives etc. They should not be financially incentivizing buyers with taxpayer funds.
I would normally agree with you, but when you factor in the indirect costs to our pocketbook from global warming, those incentives are a drop in the bucket. Just think of the expenses for individuals from the recent flooding in Florida. Cars to replace, houses to repair and treat for mold, and that is before adding in the inevitable insurance premium increases and new taxes to pay for destroyed city infrastructure. Incentives and pressure on the manufacturers to offer lower cost EVs, plus limiting future electricity prices and EV taxes are the only way to get us to the mass adoption that will cause competition and lower long term costs.
400lbd less weight doesn't necessarily mean less wear, less fuel consumption etc. Or it could provide those things but repairs and durability could negate the positives...Freakonomics...keep up the great work EV
Golf carts are the emperor's New clothes, just nobody wants to say it. The promotion of this net zero crap has nothing to do with the planet or the environment, all about money and control.
Do you really get $7,500 if you buy the "right" EV?
Hell no
The MSRP is the same
the check you write or the E-transfer you make don't reflect that $7,500
If you finance the EV the bank could care less about the $7,500
Elon should not have reduced the price of any Tesla over that $7,500
You will "see" the $7,500 a year to 2 years after paying full price for the EV
and then you simply will pay a little less on your taxes
It's a stupid sales gimmick that the EV world should have just ignored.
People like money even if it is a bit delayed the credit absolutely enters into people's buying decisions. If they fix the leasing loophole it might actually encourage more north american manufacturing and mining. I still wish they had simply taxed new ICE cars instead and dislike the impact on innovative vehicles like Aptera which got snubbed by the revised legislation - not enough money greasing the wheels of democracy like GM.
My understanding is that in 2024 the credit will be at the time of purchase.
@@ccibinel We hauled a surprising amount of cargo between cities several times over the last six months in a late model Japanese econobox. Our next car will be a compact electric, and decent cargo space will be essential. Looks like you might be able to get a six pack of Michelob behind the sets of an Aptera. Two if you wanna risk breaking a few.
@@ub59 Aptera has 32 cubic feet of cargo space - far more than most cars. This is enough space to sleep 2 people. This is enough space for 42 turkeys (30lb / 0.6 cubic feet each - given about 80% packing efficiency); not saying that is the best use of cargo space but it is a lot of turkeys.
Note: I don't recommend carrying over 1200lb of cargo in a lightweight vehicle but it would fit.
@@dansanger5340 Congress can change it at the drop of a hat.
If you buy an EV how are you going to mitigate the pollutionn and human suffering you have caused?
What about the Bolt euv ?
NONE.
It's easy!! Buy an ICE vehicle and not an EV. If you bought an EV, return if for a full refund if you were not warned about Slaves in the Congo dying in the metal mines.
IRA is an awful idea. Since EV are the best they don’t need the IRA
@@mikadavies660 The leasing loophole means it doesn't even do a good job about encouraging local manufacturing/mining.
IRA is protectionism and unamerican. Americans go around the world lecturing people about free trade and then do this. Amazing hypocrisy.
Rivian R1T is a good car, but Rivian won’t be around soon to make it, they’ll be bankrupt.
You think electric cars are great well, WRONG!!! Why don't you let people know that the miners digging for the stuff you need to make electric cars are children!! Shove your electric car!!!!
I think they still dig for oil.
I presume the "stuff" you mean is Cobalt. Most Teslas have batteries using zero Cobalt.
New batteries like LFP or sodium don't use cobalt, so the kids can go back to starving to death.
E car are not safe. And can not run long enough. It's a fake dream.
