    I 'rode' this great ride over breakfast, in London.

    Used to ride this route all the time on my way from the Central Station to the university and back in 2010/11. So this was a nice trip down memory lane with not even that much changes (except for the tram tracks). Thanks a lot for uploading!

    The person at the end whistling "In the hall of the Mountain King" just tops it off. Picked up a few things from this vid.

    I knew the "no cars or motorcycles" sign at 1:20 looked strange - in the UK, the equivalent sign has the motorcycle on top...weird difference.

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 2 года назад

      @Frank It might be interpreted as 'no transport of motorcycles on top of cars' 😄
      This leaves no possible discussion.
      But sometimes small differences in signs draw our attention. Do not know how the 'Vienna' sign looks like.

    • @annabelholland
      @annabelholland 2 года назад

      Doesn't this sign actually mean 'no motor vehicles'? It means that all motor vehicles (i.e. , one with an engine/motor) are not allowed, but pedestrians and cyclists are. So it's not only cars and motorcycles that are not allowed, but also buses, trucks, vans and any vehicle with an engine/motor (not including e bikes). If additional info is below the no motor vehicles sign (like the 'except residents'), it means that a motor vehicle can only enter if they are a resident on that road.

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 2 года назад

      @@annabelholland In the Netherlands there are classes for motor vehicles.
      If a car cannot enter, bus, truck and van are included.
      Excluded are mopeds, both 25 and 45 km/h., tractors and other agricultural vehicles etc.

    • @annabelholland
      @annabelholland 2 года назад

      @@dutchman7623 I clearly stated in my previous comment that trucks and buses apply to the no motor vehicles sign. I was talking to the person who said 'no cars and motorbikes sign' and telling them it actually means no motor vehicles.
      I dont live in the NL btw, but their signs should be similar to the UK (which is where I lvie).

    • @dutchman7623

      @@annabelholland Correct! And signs are similar, unlike the US.

    Ha, I did a bike tour around Utrecht and Houten and wanted to go this way for the last stretch, but people were tired and hungry, so we went a more direct way instead. This is much more scenic 😩

    Het begin van de route was mooi, de rest was saai stadsverkeer. M.u.v. de Catharijnesingel, zeer indrukwekkende architectuur.

      Dat stadsverkeer laat vooral internationale kijkers zien hoe verschillende generaties infrastructuur eruitzien, en hoe verschillende verkeersstromen interacties met elkaar aangaan.

    The Dutch idea of "castle" wasn't quite what I expected! 🙂

    • @driewiel
      @driewiel 2 года назад

      If you're interested in castles, from Utrecht to Amerongen (25km) you have 1. Beverweert, 2. Hardenbroek, 3. Weerdesteyn, 4. Sterkenburg, 5.Lunenburg, 6.Hindersteyn, 7.Moersbergen, 8.Hindersteyn, 9.Doorn, 10.Lunenburg, 11.Rhijnestein, 12.Walenburg, 13.Sandenburg, 14.Groenestein, 15.Zuilenburg, 16.Duurstede, 17.Zuylestein, and 18. Amerongen. I think it will be a 40-50km bike ride if you want to see them all. Some look like large houses. But most are genuine castles. I probably forge a few nearby. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kromme Rijn has the highest density of castles in the world.

    • @Maxime_K-G
      @Maxime_K-G 2 года назад +2

      When strategic/defensive castles stopped being built the term went on to be used for big and ornate houses. I find it quite confusing as well sometimes but I guess back in the day a house like that one would be considered impressive and worthy of the title.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 2 года назад +1

      Rhijnauwen is currently (obviously) much more of a landhuis (country house) than a real castle. The thing is that it was *originally* a 14th century fortified house, and that’s when the name came in. It was razed to the ground early 16th and the current building is almost completely new, but that’s why it has the name, while a new-build country house like that wouldn’t.
      It’s current use BTW is as a youth hostel, since 1933.

    Is the person at 11:19 supposed to be here or is she riding the wrong way down the street?

  • @JasperJanssen
    @JasperJanssen 2 года назад

    7:50 huh! Odd choice to turn left here instead of going straight through onto the “bicycle superhighway” between Uithof and the Station, going through the Wilhelminapark/Reigerstraat/Nachtegaalstraat/Janskerkhof/Vredenburg area. Although I suppose that is a route that’s already been shown on the channel before.

      You just answered your own question! Plus... construction going on on Burg. Reigerstraat.
