Abandoned- 100 years same family. 4 old homes in Millswood with History and Mystery

  • Hey house lovers and explorers!
Today we look at 4 old dwelling that all were situated in the suburb of Millswood here in Adelaide, South Australia. 3 were on Mitchell Street and the other close by at the end of Alexander Ave.
The first 3 homes are all classic early 1900 sandstone and red brick cottages/villas and I was able to uncover some history on all 3 and find a few old items within the dirt which enables a good old goose chase on Ancestry to unlock some of the mystery and questions it lead me to ask.
Joining the dots was easy on some aspects but not so much on a few others which you will see.
These old homes can tell us so much about days gone by and how people went about their lives back in the good old days.
The last home was a little more recent being and early 501s build and I do also show what has taken the place of a couple of these old gems and you all can feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Hope you all enjoy the video, cheers for watching :-)

    Hi Paul
Was amazing to see the houses.
I grew up in Mitchell Street and knew Bill Schofield as he was a very good friend of my father's.
My sister and I used to ride our bikes in Alexander Street as it was a dead end and we were safe to do so.
It brought back many memories of all the people who lived around us.
It is such a shame the houses could not be refurbished as the styles were so unique.
    Thank you for the memories.

Anyways, I kind of understand your perspective regarding this old house at the dead end, and I am sure plenty of viewers share your sentiments, and I don't intend to insult anyone, but using that house as a car repair shop, was something that made me go, Great! That house was abused, as you said " Was probably used as a place to sleep" I am so glad that this poor house was finally treated well and got herself a brand new gown. That building at 43 Mitchell St. (@40:00) --- I honestly thought it was a suburban branch of a bank. Ugly as hell. The house it replaced was so sunny and airy, just the best of 1950's style, that porch with the real windows that allow outside air, not plate glass so it's like you're in a terrarium
As for the rest, terrible to demolish them. And for the Scofield house, too bad it's no longer part of the family history but I'm sure there were reasons. Really good work in this video. Your homework on former owners, the commentary as you go, done professionally.

Last one was okay, the kitchen cupboards were pretty amazing. I don't care for modern construction or style very much. The construction is usually cheap and there is usually no charm or distinguishing features. Thanks, Paul

Some companies are building some great replicas which I will try do a video on. Nice ones, Paul. That first one, and the history of the one family living in it all those years, really was amazing. To think of the stories that those walls could tell! Even the pit in the old garage...just seeing the ladder to get in and out of it got me thinking about all the hands that grasped those rungs over the years - amazing! Thanks, too, for taking the time to do the background history on so many of these places. It really adds texture and perspective to these grand old ladies that you explore, making the finds (and the shares) that much more interesting and significant. Keep up the grand work!

It definitely would be real nice to find these much older pre war homes. They do have that warm, we'll lived and once loved vibe to them.
My Nan and Pop had a mechanics pit. Which would have been useful. And was also a great place to stash eaten walnut shells, stored in the shed, that were freshly picked from the block🤣

Watching these videos remind me of mine and my husbands first home that was knocked down after we moved out (we rented it). It had the lean to back bathroom, toilet and laundry with the old copper pot in the corner.
I understand why some of the homes get knocked down as sometimes they just can’t be saved structurally (the huge floor to ceiling cracks aren’t a good sign) but it always makes me so sad to see it.

I reckon the council had a bit to say about the new dwellings. Still there should be a law in place where these old beauties can not demolished. Nothing developed today has the standards of yester year. Thanks and please continue bringing these videos.

Sometimes I feel like they all resemble one another but the people that lived in them made them look different that's not an insult what I'm saying it's just when you look at something with it the people inside it loses their luster

First of all THANK YOU for your hard work Paul. It is so sad to see these old houses being destroyed, these walls that have soaked up stories for centuries, what makes these houses so charming and gives them soul and character. Modern houses can only give us a roof over our heads, but never the feeling of being at home. I hope you get what I mean, I can't put it any other way. Thank you 🤗
