If Qual hadn't met Frieren the Slayer, humanity would've never stood a chance against the demons. Qual instantly replicated the defensive spell against Zoltrak upon seeing it once. That spell was the culmination of 80 years of humanity's magic research. Imagine what he could've done if he saw Frieren's Pinnacle of Magic. It's honestly no surprise that the best course of action was to petrify him. There was no way to beat Qual with the magic technology they had at the time of the Demon King's death. The only reason he lost is that magic techniques finally caught up with his genius. Another thing I have to mention is that Frieren; the demon hating elf mage, decided to reverse engineer Zoltrak and modified it to better fight demons. Qual is a big reason for Frieren's notoriety and I honestly think that Frieren giving him the choice of a painless death even though he's a demon shows how much he respected Qual as a mage. Frieren is just beautifully written and I want more seasons to be animated.
