The reason Cal's father favoured aaron over him, is probably because he became very self aware at a young age, and started to question everything, including his father's authority, all while aaron stayed innocent and shielded from the the darker truths about his father's past.
Even his surrender is so powerful! Why is he so captivating?! His screen presence is truly all-consuming. I cant help my heart's yearning, huh plus his hands at 0:42-0:50 look so beautiful.
Coz he's dead and he died young. You are consumed by his death. You didn't see his mistakes, his flaws and neither see him age. Time would have changed it all for you. Much like it did for all girls like you who fantasized Brando.

Sean Fitzpatrick what makes you say that? I think he is a wonderful actor, especially in this film. He made me feel bad for Cal. And feeling, to me, seems the only measure of s person's greatness in art. So why do you think he was overrated?
James Dean dazzles on this scene swinging back and forth while delivering his lines. One of my favorite scenes in this movie. The line he uttered, 'I've been jealous all my life' hits so hard it melts my heart everytime no matter how many times I've seen this film and this particular scene.
This is my favorite scene in the film, it’s the true climax. Cal finally gets to vocalize everything he's been repressing. It’s played beautifully by Dean and imo it's the most effective of his tragically brief career.
Cal is right in this situation. The father only never has accepted how he was different, he is not so sumisive as Aaron is. And the father wanted both sons were the same. Cal is not the Great villain that it seems. Is Steinbeck's way, you have to make a second lecture of it.
@@theketaminekid1241 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 That’s a good one. He seems to be a troll or just a James Dean hater who can’t accept the fact that he’s considered one of the best actors ever made.
Adam's values went too far - instead of steadying him to facing the reality of the world around him, he used them as a shield from said reality. Aron was shielded by the same illusions. Cal's anger and bitterness comes from being excluded from his father's sanctimony and trying to fit into society. So I really don't have much empathy for Adam - he reaps what he ultimately sows.
This scene is one of James Dean's best moments. While I still love Rebel Without a Cause more, this scene shows just how great he was. Man, what a tragedy...I only imagine what he could have done had that accident not happened.
Good, not great movie....a bit of a soap opera.....still Dean saves it....what he could have done had he lived....but heres news for all who worship him....had it not been Turnipseed, it could have, maybe would have, at the race that weekend.....he had a wish to be immortalised....and he wanted to go out young....who takes photos of himself in a coffin.....
There are a number of excellent performances in this film, but I thought the slanted and off-center camera angles only detracted from some of the scenes. The camera should never call attention to itself.
But it make the watcher feel "unconfortable". To me it add something. It was a peculiar choice from director Kazan: every time Cal and his father are talking of something really thorny or the situation becomes tense, the camera is unbalanced, as their relationship. In this scene it moves too, according to Dean's swinging. It's the point of no return, the situation is out of control.
"I don't want any kind of love anymore" how truly right that is, love will only be our death, even when we live, it'll kill us and make us walking corpses when love disappoints us
I'm not agree. The movie is only about the last part of the book, it will take a 10 hours movie to adapt *all* the book! 2 families, 3 generations + the complete story of many other characters... it's impossibile to have all of that in one movie. Many important characters have been resized or canceled or sum up in one character (for example, Abra in the movie is a combination of Abra + Li), but the movie isn't bad at all, it takes the spirit of the book even if less detailed, as obvious. Plus, every actor did a wonderful job.
What a way to open the scene with conversation on a swing - coming back and forth in the shot! Way to go
MusicMe Such a beautiful shot!
James Dean was fantastic. He absolutely dazzles on this scene. @@freddyrichards878
james dean.. so ahead of his time in acting... raw and real❤
True, but there was one Montgomery Clift before him though. Seeing a slight Monty emulation in this scene.
“I’m not my brother’s keeper.” is exactly what Cain says after God asks Him where Abel is (after murdering Abel)
FRANCO PEREZ it’s up to you to believe that, however, it’s there in the Bible, or do you think that’s not a real book?
Probably Charles would say that, if he could kill Adam
"do I look like that mfs dad?" - Cain lying to god's face

Going back and forth on a swing while in the middle of an argument is the most James Dean thing to do.
Watching this scene, I feel like Cal. Love certainly doesn’t pay off. Cal can do so much better than love from his biased, stupid father.
