  • It seems everyone is moving to Queretaro, Mexico but is it really CHEAP? What is the cost of living in Mexico? How affordable is living in Mexico, really?
    I'm British and I've been living in Queretaro, Mexico with my Mexican wife, Karen for the past two years. In this video, we talk about all of our monthly expenses and our standard of living to help give you an idea of how much money you need to live in Mexico.
    Queretaro is home to many expats. There is a lot of international business here and many foreigners are sent here to work. If you are going to work in Queretaro, we hope that this video will give you an idea about what budget you will need and the prices to expect for a month's expenses.
    We've seen that a lot of foreigners are choosing to retire in Mexico and Queretaro is a very popular destination. We show you how much money you need to retire in Mexico and the kind of lifestyle that you can expect.
    We think that Queretaro is one of the best places to live in Mexico. If you want to move to Mexico or retire in Mexico, feel free to ask us any questions below. We have also made several other videos about the topic of prices in Queretaro, Mexico. If you want further information, please check out our other videos below:
    I made this video in 2019. If you want some more recent details, I made another video on the cost of living in Querétaro:

    I really like your channel, mainly because you two, are living the real mexican life, not like others gringo RUclipsrs that are bragging about their fancy /cheap Mexican dream life, fancy restaurant, rooftop bars etc, as a backpacker, living the simple life, I think your videos are more realistic down to earth and I appreciate it.

    I am American and my girlfriend is Mexican born and raised in Mexico. I've visited her in her city twice and I personally want to move to Mexico. She wants me to be with her and move to her city. We've talked about this and are taking baby steps. Although I am ready to leave America and am looking for a change, I realize that I am stepping out of my element. The one thing I want to make sure of when I move to Mexico is that I am able to find a work from home job. If I can do that in order to keep finances good, that would be great for both of us.

    Really interesting video - thanks! Felicidades por el inglés! I would love to have the chance to live in Querétaro at some point! Incidentally, the problem with a Brit retiring to Mexico is that you would not get the inflation-linked annual increase in the state pension. Another option would be to remain resident in the UK, while spending, say, six months, in Mexico (which happens to be the FMM time limit). (You can see I have thought about this, even though I am years away from retirement!)

    • @statingtheobviousify
      @statingtheobviousify 5 лет назад

      I didn't know that about missing out on the increases in the pension. I won't get it anyway because I won't have made the necessary contributions.
      If you have any private pensions or own a property in the UK then you'd be in great position. I imagine that the real issue when it comes to retiring would be health care. In the UK, it's all taken care of but here you'd have to add insurance onto any budget. This is why it's so popular for Americans. They can get good quality health care for a fraction of the price in the states.
      With free medical attention likely to no longer be available to our seniors in Spain soon, perhaps we'll be seeing more migration towards Latin America from the UK.

    • @neilpyper
      @neilpyper 5 лет назад

      Dave Ingles Yes, that is definitely possible. I can certainly imagine a scenario where it is easier to live and work in Mexico than, say, Spain (though I hope it doesn’t come to that). Out of interest, what is the realistic cost of medical insurance?

      Private hospitals are really good an affordable in Mexico. You should check that out. Because the free health service in Mexico is overflowed, there’s a lot of private hospital with affordable prices. Believe it or not a lot of Americans come to the dentist or for operations in private hospitals in Mexico, because USA is really expensive for that.

    Hi there. I've been following your adventures in Queretaro. Good luck on your move to China. I have a question about the large bottles of water. You mention carrying them yourself. So you buy them in the neighborhood and carry them yourself? Isn't there a way there to get them delivered to your door?

    • @statingtheobviousify
      @statingtheobviousify 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, there is a way of getting them delivered but it's not as simple as just calling someone and they bring it there and then, at least not here.
      We got it delivered with the rest of the things from the supermarket but poor planning on my part often resulted in lugging the bottle from the shop to the flat.

    Your electricity has to be government subsidized to keep the price that low. In Portugal, where I live, it would be impossible to pay that price. Even if you don't use it, the mimimum is more than that. Mobile phone plans in Portugal would be double. I don't know if your internet is optic fiber or if it includes tv channels and fixed phone. Here the package with 200 TV channels costs about 45 dollars. It is cheaper to eat out in Mexico than in Portugal although Portugal is definitely one of the most affordable countries in Europe. Our groceries cost about the same as yours with milk being a lot lower. Here coffee in a café is cheaper than in Mexico and Portugal does not produce coffee while Mexico does. Services in Mexico of course will be cheaper because of salaries. A cleaning lady makes at least six euros an hour here. While Querétaro wins hands down in climate a Portuguese city wins in safety. Public health care is also much better in Portugal than in Mexico. Public transportation in Mexico is very cheap but it is a lot less efficent or comfortable than in Portugal. What makes a lot of expats come here is the safety, good quality health care, and proximity and ease of travel to all the other countries in the EU. Once you get residency you can cross any EU border without the need of showing any document.

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  3 года назад

      Great summary, thanks! Portugal is definitely somewhere we'd like to spend some time in the near future and cost of living is one of the reasons so I appreciate the breakdown.
      You're right about the subsidised electricity. The price per watt is tiered so that people who use more subsidise those who use less. We don't use much so it's basically nothing for us but things can get quite expensive if you use a lot of air conditioning and other high-electricity appliances.

      Mexico has all kind of people. tall, short, medium, brown, white, black, straight hair, curly hair, red hair.
      Just a funny fact. Many people in the usa think all mexicans are short and brown because a lot mexicans that migrate to usa have those features. In the other hand a lot of people from South and Central America think most Mexicans are tall with light skin because that's how the actors in the soap opera look like.

      @statingtheobviousify 4 года назад

      You'll get an answer. We read all the comments!
      I'll let Karen give you her perspective separately. For me it was very easy to find work as an English teacher. I was always curious about how easy it would be to find a job outside of teaching but I never tried.
      There are loads of foreigners working in the various international companies in Queretaro. I think most of them are transferred from jobs they already have in their home counties, though.

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  4 года назад

      As a Mexican, it can be very difficult.
      I moved to Querétaro and I was looking for a job to settle down there. It took me around two months to find one and I had experience and a degree
      I've heard that for some people it can be easier but it also depends on the salary. The more youre looking to earn, the longer it takes.

    My experience as an expat has been that the economics for foreigners and locals can be quite different. Do you think all the numbers given here would hold if you didn't have a Mexican wife?

    • @statingtheobviousify
      @statingtheobviousify 5 лет назад +2

      I don't think so. Foreigners probably spend more money than Mexicans on average because they normally earn more so they buy more expensive things. I'm the one in the relationship that tends to look for the deals and cheaper ways of doing things.
      In all honesty, I've never felt that I've been taken advantage of in Queretaro. People couldn't really care less that I'm a foreigner.

    Are there jobs and is it wheelchair accessible? Is any place in Mexico wheelchair accessible? Thank you. Oh and I wanted to hear the Spanish language. Why did you stop her from speaking Spanish. I’m learning Spanish, you ought to try it too!

    • @statingtheobviousify
      @statingtheobviousify 4 года назад

      I think you'll find that Mexico is generally much less wheelchair accessible than the US and Europe. There are plenty of jobs but the problem is than many of them pay very poorly. Depending on your skillset there are some very good jobs available in international companies. In Queretaro, at least, many foreign engineers live very well. There's also a huge demand for English teachers, although the wages are low. I've made a video about this specifically, if you're interested.
      If you want to hear Spanish, there are plenty of videos on the channel where we both speak Spanish. We made this video in English to reach a wider audience and since you found it, it seems like that worked.
      If you're looking to practice your Spanish, Karen is currently teaching on italki so feel free to check out her profile.
