You saved my life. We had a dead N5030 with loads of holiday photos on it. was able to get the drive out, put it in a caddy and get the photos off.

I also use a small zip tie to pop the top apart. I have had to replace the DVD drive at least 3 times. Replacing the hard looks way easier, thanks for the video

Twice here! I wonder why the DVD drive fails so often. Aside from that, this is a super reliable laptop, my gf's had the display on constantly for 10 years. LED backlights are amazing. Oh yeah, at some point the fan wears out when it's on high for years and years, but that's like 10-15 bucks, usually after the CPU thermal paste dries out lol. In retrospect, the most underrated yet powerful laptop of it's era.

You should generally remove the keyboard on most laptops first, to make accessing the ribbon cables easier for the touchpad, buttons & keyboard.
Also, do not use a screwdriver to separate the two plastic halves, always use plastic
tools, to avoid damaging the plastic finish. If you absolutely insist in using metal tools,
metal dentistry tools work best, especially the hooks, the rounded corners help to not mar the finish, and the hook shape makes keeping it inside the shell while you slide easy.

Not a problem. I'm a repair tech at my local computer shop and was just mystified to why Dell hid the hard drive. It's usually one of the easiest brands to remove a hard drive from.

Very true! Early in my career I remember making that very mistake. Best thing to do is next time you dis-mantle a computer, use something to label your screws or at the very least help you remember where they go. Also, if while screwing the screw in, if it seems difficult then its possibly not the right screw-hole and/or screw.

Seriously... the best 'how to' video I've seen for anything on YT. :-) Just one question... after I get the new hard drive plugged in and fasten and screw everything back together, what's going to happen when I turn in on? Will it boot up normally? Will I have to download anything special as far as software goes? Thanks a lot, HUGE help! (And, you saved me a LOT of money, so thanks again!)

It's easier to plug the palm rest cables and keyboard cables in if you remove the keyboard. There are 3 tabs at the top to the keyboard securing it to the palm rest.

  •  11 лет назад +1

Always double-check these videos by googling "laptop type"+ support manual, then you get manufacturer instructions. "n5030 support manual" gives you specific instructions in what order to do things (e.g. remove the keyboard first for not harming the connectors when removing palmrest. Also, top part (display side) of palmrest may be tricky to unhinge and may need quite hard prying.

  • @AdamCorkett
    @AdamCorkett 3 года назад

To access the RAM etc. more easily take the keyboard off first. Two screws on the back need to be removed before though, they're left and right of the service tag essentially, slightly diagonal from each other. Push the clips back above F1, F6 and Insert keys. Then use a plastic prising tool to lift from the top edge gently. You'll find 4 cables to remove, but they're easily done with care and easily returned too. Then you can unscrew the base and pop the clips to separate the facia from the base as shown in this video.

Very hard to say. Your best bet is to take one of the screws and slowly screw it in one of the holes. WARNING be sure that it does not start driving through on the other side. You could also find a complete tear-down manual on Dell's website. This may help you find which correct hole each screws belongs in. Honestly though, it should be easy enough to just slowly screw one of the screws in to see if it fits. Hope that helps! Please show your support and subscribe!!!

Is the N5010 a little more difficult? The videos I have seen on RUclips take almost the entire thing apart? This was a little less intrusive.
    Good Job and Thanks.
BTW, what is the labor cost for a N5010. DELL shows the 500GB DRIVE for about $80.

It is much safer to tilt the keyboard (three tabs at the top), unclip the three conductive tapes, and then remove the cover. It will take an extra 2 minutes, but you don't destroy anything if you lift the cover too much.
