Rustic Shelf with Hammer Head Hooks

- In this video I make a rustic shelf with hammer heads for the clothes hooks. I thought about making this out of a nicer wood but I had some leftover pallet wood and decided to use it instead. If I don’t like it I can always unscrew the hammer heads and attach them to a nicer shelf. I purchased the hammers awhile ago at Harbor Freight for around $3-$4 ea. I bought them because they were cheap and thought I could use them for something other than their intended use. I didn’t have a set design or plan for these I just put it together as I went along. Overall it came out okay. No major issues except for the split wood, that was the shelf, that I should have fixed before I attached it. This is the first time I tried adding a hammered texture to metal I really like the way that turned out it fits the piece well. If I were to make this again I would probably want to add something to the bottom edge it feels like it is missing something but I don’t have any ideas what that might be right now. Well I hope you enjoy the video and hopefully this gets your creative juices flowing.

I like the simplicity of the design - nicely done!!
Thank you and thanks for the sub it is appreciated.
Fantastic project Dan loved your shelf supports !!! Happy Woodworking David
Thank you I need to revisit the hand hammered look it adds a nice touch of texture.
Good thought to texture the flat bar, the time spent paid off - it gives it a cohesive look. Nice job.
+dumb idiot Thanks sometimes you get lucky improvising.
Wow seems like a good use for all them old hammers I have laying around the shed
Cheers

Glad you liked it!
Pretty cool! The hammer texture is a good idea...
+Peter Scalzitti It came out better than I thought it would and it was a good work out for my forearms.
gorgeous work, ty for sharing !
Wow! thank you for the compliment!
Really cool project, only thing I would have done differently is maybe antique the hammers so they aren't so shiny and new looking.
Nice suggestion that would look cool!
I was thinking the same thing! I absolutely LOVE the old leather handled hammers, but they would be WAY to difficult to mount on something like this.
wow just when you think you have seen it all. keep it up!!
Thanks!
Dan. That turned out great. That kind of build is right up my alley. Subbed. Keep up the great work.
+Muddy Fences Thanks for subbing and watching!
great idea to use hammerheads as hooks!! 👍
Thanks I had that idea for awhile and then finally decide to make the shelf for it. It was kind of a design on the fly sort of build.
it looks great! maybe i have to steal/transform the idea and use a hammerhead for example as a doorknob for a future project or something. :)
That would be cool. I've thought about trying to anneal the hammer heads and then drill them out to make a chandelier or maybe a wall sconce. Not really practical or even aesthetically pleasing but fun project...maybe?
I love this project!! I ran into your belt buckle video again and jumped here.
Thanks for checkout my backlog.
Really nice idea. 👏🏾👏🏾

Thanks I appreciate the support!
hey dan you are the best youtuber and i like your videos
Amazing idea. What would the hammer heads look like painted?
Might look cool!
Great work. The hammer heads look good, but I am sorry seeing you cut them (I know they are very cheap). I will look some more of your works. :)
Thank you very much for checking out my channel and for leaving all the comments.
have you thought about curving each claw section up and out a little? that way, you could utilize the claw to hold purses or even kids' jackets. I don't know if a hammer head can actually be bent, now that i think about it, but still.
Tha't's an interesting idea thanks for the suggestion.
So cool!
+Robin Lewis Thanks for watching.
Very cool!
+Cactus! workshop Thanks for watching. I really do appreciate it.
Cool idea.
+Dan Thanks I'm glad you like it.
This is amazing how do you come up with all the ideas? Definitely subscribing!
Thanks!
Expensive project what did the hammers cost. Good job
Thanks but don't get the wrong idea I bought the hammers on sale at a store called Harbor Freight. These are really cheap hammers I paid something like $2-3 each on sale years ago. I think now they have them for $5 each. So all in all not too bad the wood was free and the metal I can't recall if I already had it or not.
Great idea and a nice addition to the wife's Primitive Country collection - Just curious though, what are the cut lengths (as the widths are - assumably what ever the boards are cut to when made for the pallet board they came from) Thanks in advance!
Sorry unfortunately I didn't write down any dimensions I just mocked everything up and went with what looked right. I also gave this away so I can't go out and measure it. But looking at the video the vertical pieces are spaced about 6-8 inches apart. If you look at the vertical pieces and imagine the boards butted up right next to each other you could probably fit 7 boards across. So I would estimate the width is about 21 inches. The planks that make up the horizontal back and shelf are wider than the vertical planks. These are usually about 6 inches wide. So maybe 12 inches for the two back piece and 6 inches wide for the shelf. I don't know the length of the metal supports since I just cut them to length. Since the pallet wood is somewhat less than perfect I do remember one metal support being longer than the other. I hope this helps I'm not very good about measuring and writing dimensions I usually try to mock something up and see if it looks good. I hope this helps.
Thanks for your quick reply... That's great! at least now I have some kind of idea for measurements.... Good Stuff! Thx!!
Sure anytime let me know if there is anything else I can do. Good luck on your project.
Love it
Thanks glad you liked it, I had this idea brewing for awhile so when the end result came out half way decent I was very happy.
Cool project, but do you really need it!
Nope that's why I sold it.

Cool thanks!
What glue did you use please?
