    The Cosby Show is an American television sitcom co-created by and starring Bill Cosby, which aired Thursday nights for eight seasons on NBC between September 20, 1984, until April 30, 1992. The show focuses on an upper middle-class African-American family living in Brooklyn, New York.
    The Cosby Show spent five consecutive seasons as the number-one rated show on television. The Cosby Show and All in the Family are the only sitcoms in the history of the Nielsen ratings to be the number-one show for five seasons. It spent all eight of its seasons in the top 20.
    According to TV Guide, the show "was TV's biggest hit in the 1980s, and almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes." TV Guide also ranked it 28th on their list of 50 Greatest Shows. In addition, Cliff Huxtable was named as the "Greatest Television Dad".
    In May 1992, Entertainment Weekly stated that The Cosby Show helped to make possible a larger variety of shows with a predominantly black cast, from In Living Color to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The Cosby Show was based on comedy routines in Cosby's stand-up comedy act, which in turn were based on his family life. The show led to the spinoff A Different World, which ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993.

    This show enlightened so many families in the 80's and 90's with diversity.All walks of life walked thru the Cosby home. It's just too bad some people's egos get so inflated they hurt others for their own pleasure. May God have mercy and forgiveness on their souls.

      Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I know Cosby wasn't the man we expected and wanted him to be The show was supposed to be a good example of the functioning family unit. I grew up in an Italian family (*could be turbulent and violent...) and to be honest I rather have been part of the Cosby family. They talked more; they listened more. They disagreed without going to war. Thats what I aspired for my family. It's hard to break generational trauma to get to this level of family love and function :}

      @@denniswelsh8335 Don't think I did that by saying ego can mess up the idea of what the show was meant to do..Most sitcoms are not based on the average family,they are the idea of what a family is suppose to be. Some of these shows were all some kids had to believe it existed..

      @@inahgreen4363 there's nothing wrong with showing a good example though - meaning sometimes the best form of flattery is imitation. Yes maybe the Huxtables were not the average family - but it also gives people (*like myself) who came from severely dysfunctional families) something better to aspire to :}

    Why did a family that lived in New York, where all the kids were born, spoke like they were based in a Southern State? It's very biased to have them speaking like that, as if those States are the Only 'black' States.

      I completely understand what you're saying. None of the children were from New York City. If memory serves both Malcolm and Keisha are from New Jersey. That's the closest the cast got to NYC. Bill Cosby is from Philadelphia and Phylicia Rashad is from Texas. Not a legit New Yorker in the lot. It's interesting how TV shows got away with stuff like that.
