  • The New GP-1 oil is uniquely formulated from true Pennsylvania Grade Petroleum. The distinct properties of Pennsylvania grade base oil compounded with select synthetic components provide a higher Pressure-Viscosity Coefficient for excellent High Temperature-High Shear (HTHS) stability for increased film thickness; combined with Driven’s high zinc (ZDDP) additive package GP-1 delivers a synergetic chemical balance, producing optimum engine protection.

I was fortunate to learn from one of the best in the Ford Engine building business as I was growing up during the sixties. It was Gene Wilson and he was also my oldest brother which made the learning curve even better. He taught me everything from Nitro fueled 427 SOHC (Cammers) to the 427 Hi-Risers that powered the Thunderbolt Fairlanes in Phil Bonner’s Ford Drag Team.
He was definitely on the cutting edge of Drag Racing Performance and on the subject of engine oil, he insisted on using any premium brand that was refined from Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil. He definitely wasn’t a petrochemical engineer but by the time he finished explaining the in depth technical reasons why Pennsylvania crude and its refined product was vastly superior to everything else available at the time, it became apparent that he did his homework on the subject.

Keep in mind that during the sixties , synthetic automotive lubricants weren’t commercially available everywhere like they are today. So it was a good idea to do a little research and find out the origins of your favorite engine oil. Just because a particular oil is expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it comes from a good source of crude.
I’ve been using full synthetic oil since the mid eighties in everything from my lawn tractor to my turbo and supercharged daily drivers. Not just in the engines but also in the transmissions and differentials without any type of oil related failures.

I’m especially glad to see that Driven is advertising the fact that they are using Pennsylvania grade oil to manufacture their synthetic blend line of engine oils. The results of their testing against the fully synthetic oils is encouraging and worth checking out as a good source of oil for a “well prepared” Ford 351 Cleveland engine that I’ve built for my street/strip ‘70 Mach 1 project.
Since Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil was an excellent choice for fossil type lubricants back in the day after millions of years in the making, another 50 years of aging can only make it better !
      And the beat goes on....

@@danielwilson6665 thanks for your insight. We've come to the realization that there is probably a good reason why Pennsylvania Grade base oils were the go-to choice when it came to lubricating oils during the industrial revolution. At this time this was before the help of additives, the first ZDDP (zinc) additive wasn't even invented until the early 1940's.
      Thanks again!

@ Driven Racing Oil....I appreciate your reply. It is an unexpected and welcome surprise. Like I mentioned in my excessively long reply, the focus has been on synthetics for so long that I was concerned about the benefits of REAL Pennsylvania grade oil being all but forgotten in all of the synthetic hoopla in the media. I won’t mention the brand but full synthetic has served me well for decades. But that’s to be expected from a product engineered for a specific purpose and sold at a price point that some folks simply cannot justify paying regardless of how well it performs.
Now along comes Driven Racing with an excellent video featuring a well known spokesperson within the Racing Community. Mr. Speed is very good at using his professional expertise to present the test results and benefits of using GP-1 Blend featuring the Globally recognized quality of Penn Grade stock. Well done guys !
As a consumer I think the market is long overdue for a product like GP-1. The video mentioned something that everyone who cares for their vehicle enough to do their own oil changes should should totally appreciate

A LOWER PRICE THAN FULL SYNTHETIC !!!
I just need to find a good local or online source for GP-1 and all is well. Thank you.

What brand oil filter do you recommend? It looks like you're using WIX in the video, but is that Driven's standard brand when testing, or just for the video? I'm running an air cooled vw engine, with a remote oil cooler and filter. Great videos and product!

Is this adequate for a high performance racing motorcycle?

Was planning on using Schaefer’s micron-moly until now actually already have three cases of it. Now I’m wondering if I need to use driven GP-1 instead. In my Ls supercharged engine (1300hp pump gas)!

Thanks Les. Do you know what your bearing clearances you are running and or what viscosity you are looking for? The GP-1 would be a good way to go in this high HP LS application.

I’m not to sure on bearing clearance Borowski race engines built it for street duty and they dynoed it on 30 weight Schaefer’s micron moly. Thanks for the response!

@@lesgray3355 Borowski are great guys and do great work, they tested some of the GP-1 I believe. If you don't mind touch base with them and see if you can acquire the bearing clearances so we make sure we get you the right viscosity. I'm thinking the GP-1 15W-40 would be a good choice. Feel free to call us when you find out, 1-866-611-1820.

Can you please clarify? I use DT 40 in my 2006 Boxster S. This was recommended by Charles Navarro at LN Engineering. Which is the better oil in my car GP-1 or DT40?
