  • At 6-years-old Ryan Hreljac started to save money to build a well in Uganda. Now, 15 year later, he has built wells across the country, giving hundreds of people access to clean drinking water.

This is a wonderful project, Ryan seems to be honestly caring and humble, and these are wonderful communities they are helping. But I have to wonder: While certainly not rich, those communities seem to be able to get by pretty well. They have buildings, school uniforms, a school marching band... Even wireless microphones apparently. Can't they afford building and maintaining wells and latrines themselves? Or are all of these donations?

Hi Topy44. Just like you, I have just seen the film and I am not related to Ryan or his family. I live in Portugal.
But what I can say is that having buildings, uniforms or even wireless microphones does not make a community wealthy. As you can see yourself, the buildings are nowhere near what people in rich countries have. Have you any schools where you live, for instance, in which students have to go outside to use a toilet? Regarding uniforms, even if they are expensive, it doesn't mean that poor people cannot buy them. I am sure that in some places they are mandatory, so parents have to make a great effort to save money and buy a school uniform so their children can go to school.
We shouldn't judge by the appearance. Besides, it is not only the material help of building wells that people need. Many times the expertise is even more precious. I couldn't build a proper well out of nothing. It would be much better if someone could teach me or if a technician could build it for me...

I suppose that is because she is an exceptional teacher, unfortunately. I wish more teachers were like her. She obviously helped trigger Ryan and his family's wonderful work.
