  • Hi guys, I have had BFS for a very long time and I have spent years helping people with Muscle twitching / fasciculations and anxiety on various platforms.
I have now decided to create some video content focused on muscle twitching and anxiety so that you can get a more personal reassurance whilst looking someone in the eye, so to speak...
BFS / Benign Fasciculation Syndrome is nothing to worry about, yes its scary at first, especially when you consult DR Google but if you have received a diagnoses please stop worrying.
Even if you have not been diagnosed specifically with BFS but your doctor or neurologist said your fine, please move on...
It’s not healthy to dwell and obsess about health related issues and always asking your self "What if".
As I mention in this video, it doesn't matter if you are twitching in your arm, leg, tongue, feet, calves, back, face, eyes or anywhere, location is not special neither is duration or frequency of the actual twitch! A twitch is a twitch!
Please feel free to comment below, I will answer all your questions and even include some questions in my next video!
    take care
Ps. I recommend exploring anything that naturally helps the state of relaxation. At home we regularly light a scented candle and enjoy the ambience and relaxation.
I recommend products as found on www.duskbydawn.com as they are high quality, eco friendly, vegan, cruelty free and toxin free.

I have had this for 20 friggin years. It comes and goes, as you say. I find magnesium helps. When I don't take it (on purpose), the twitching is more much intense--although this could just be the placebo effect. The most annoying thing about BFS are "hotspots". I can live with random twitches here and there that happen all day long, but when they happen in the same place, it drives me crazy. Two decades of it, and it is still hard. But I found your video very helpful, even after living with this for 20 years!

    • @KinkssNCoilss
      @KinkssNCoilss 3 года назад +1

I agree. It’s going on 19 years for me and it’s still incredibly annoying. After almost 19 years in, a brand new “hotspot” has developed in my left ear last month and it is *BY FAR* the most annoying and most stressful twitch I’ve ever had. I used to think eyelid hotspots were the worst but this ear thing takes the cake.
I’ve tried magnesium over the years but it doesn’t really help me, unfortunately. Or maybe I’m not taking a high enough supplement.
I just hope one day this shit will go away completely.

Great Video, I have been twitching for about 5 months, started in legs but have had them all over, currently have a hot spot on my neck on the left side almost constant. I saw my primary care doctor after a couple of months , she did a full exam did bloodwork and told me that I'm fine. I asked if I should see a neurologist, and she said no. You have to trust your doctor. Definitely what has helped me are your videos and others from fellow BFS sufferers. I still have bad days but more good days than bad.

Thank you so much for this video! I haven't been diagnosed and only just learned it was a thing. my twitches started after I was in the car with an unstable friend of mine, and he decided to drive incredibly fast and I thought he was gonna take us both out. my Doctor didn't seem to have an answer and wasn't really concerned either, and my psychologist just dismissed it as a nervous tick. I've been so terrified of not knowing what the hell is going on with my body for months! and on top of that have to deal with freaking out with loud or ongoing noises (like car engines, boiling kettles, etc.)
I'm so tired of having no idea why I'm like this. I'd never had health anxieties in the past and have dealt with undiagnosed stuff before.
I'm just really glad there are people out there who will actually know what I'm talking about now, I felt really alone before.
sorry for spilling my guts out in this comment

Melissa Lupo I hope you’re feeling better with your twitching. Sorry for the delay but life’s been very busy lately and of course with the additional stress of corona virus it’s been tough.
General advice I give to people is to change your thought process, stop giving twitching time and replace that thought process with something you love!
Stop asking yourself “what if” and try to get out for fresh air as often as possible.
Be thankful for nature and all the good things in life!
Try to zone out too, set your phone down and close your eyes and breath.. meditate and just slow down that fast world we all live in.
If you have specific questions please ask, take care.

I keep telling myself it's BFS, because my massive twitching started at the same time as the pandemic. I went weeks of hypochondria moments, from HIV to having ALS. I sat down and wrote down symptoms I noticed AFTER the pandemic and symptoms that happened before. I went 2 months of flight or fight body mode during the Covid outbreak..After writing everything down it boiled down to carpal tunnel syndrome with ulnar nerve compression (waking up with sleepy hands). Everything else, from twitching to "percieved weakness", was something I experienced after the pandemic. I truly believe my anxiety triggered BFS.

Thank you for this video. I couple weeks ago I started noticing tremors in my hands and soon after started getting constant muscles twitches all over my body. I laughed watching this because I'm that person that is constantly sticking out my tongue, walking on my tiptoes, and doing push ups to check my strength. In February, I left the US for a new job in another country where I didn't know anyone. I am still under a lot of stress trying to learn to navigate my new life apart from my family and friends. I think one of the major breaking points for me was when Covid hit as I was just moving into my new place. I was so paranoid about contracting it that I checked my temperature every hour of every day and never left my apartment unless it was to go to work. As someone who is an extremely hypersensitive hypochondriac, I know my thoughts are irrational but it's hard to over look them. I've recently booked an appointment with a therapist to try to get in a better mindset and I'm getting tests done by a neurologist in a few weeks. I know these twitches are most likely anxiety induced, but I need that confirmation from my doctor just for my own peace of mind.

I appreciate you putting this video out to help calm people's nerves, literally. lol. I started having this twitching about 3-4 yrs ago. Started with the eye fluttering often, then it spread to every single part of my body, even inside my ear and in my nether regions, which is something I never hear about from anyone (perhaps it's taboo to talk about). Only had occasional, very mild, twitching in the years leading up to this. I've had anxiety my whole life, but now have much better coping mechanisms, so the anxiety is much less than before, but as a single parent have had responsibilities piled on top of me, which didn't help matters. I drink pop and smoke cigarettes, which I'm sure also doesn't help. I was told it might be Vitamin D deficiency since my levels were low, and have taken vitamin D and magnesium for some years now, but it's not making any difference with the chronic twitching, but it seems to have boosted my immune system, which is a nice side effect. Given the stressful situations that I've had to deal with lately, it's hard to quit my habits of pop and cigs, though I'm working on a plan to quit both. Not sure if it will make a difference with this though.

@Krishna Thapa Forgot I left this comment somewhere. Twitching has gone way down because I found out that my thyroid is messed up (hypo-thyroid). I'm now taking supplements for it which has taken the twitching way down. Will be getting on medication for it as well. Stress can cause thyroid issues. So if anyone has these same symptoms, please get your thyroid checked!!

Thank you very much for this video. I was very deep down. I thought that I had ALS. I have fasciculations for about 3 months. The only symptom that I have are fasciculations all over my body but nothing else.
I will be father in a couple of weeks from now in a coronavirus times and ,maybe, all this together gives me anxiety generating this BFS.
I have done blood test, GP visit and neurological visit.
They have said. There is nothing wrong with you. You are in a perfect health condition don’t think about it.

Becoming a parent has caused this for me. When my baby was 4 months old he stopped sleeping through the night. I was exhausted and unable to think straight. I brought my baby to swimming and when I got home I noticed my arm was exhausted from holding his baby seat. The tiredness kept up all day so I googled tiredness in the arm. Then ALS popped up. I absolutely freaked out. I started noticing absolutely every single minute movement my arm would make. I started over thinking everything my arm was doing convincing myself it wasnr right. I had several severe panic attacks and sleepless nights. Then after about 2 months of this my arm began to twitch. Then my leg, my neck, my thumb, my toes wouldn't hold still at night from all the twitching and I felt like I was internally shaking. It's been almost 9 months now and I haven't gotten any weaker now are my muscles atrophying; just twitching so I know its not ALS. I'm going to see a neurologist on the 22nd of Jan to rule anything because my mother has MS but its only lately I have copped on to the fact I don't have Motor Neuron Disease. Its very easy to get caught up in the twitching and go back to the "what if the twitching is something serious?" thought but I'm trying to take care of myself. Getting more sleep, eating right and exercising. Gut health is hugely linked to all this and brain health in general. I highly recommend looking into it!

Don’t panic, it’s great they are following up!
They may have noticed you were anxious and simply want t offer a follow up to reassure you further.
Typically a clinical examination is all you need and you passed. If you were twitching for other reasons other than BFS the Neuro would most likely have seen other issues for concern and they did not.
      Go enjoy your day 😎

My fasciculations (mainly left calf muscle) started in January. The skin on my legs feels desensitized and I tremble almost all of the time ( probably due to anxiety). I have vestibular migraines, oral dysesthesia and tinnitus - all neurological conditions and I am 64, right in the ballpark for a degenerative disease. I also know someone with MND (ALS) for whom it took 18 months for a diagnosis. Went to GP, referred to neurologist and got the appointment for six months hence then Coronavirus hit and I am locked down alone. So all of these things together have contributed to a near mental collapse as I had convinced myself that I in early stage MND.
Yes I did Google the symptoms and likely outcome and it was only then that I found out about BFS. I am given to somatic analysis so I am hoping this is what it turns out to be. Won’t be convinced until I have an EMG whenever that may be with this dratted lockdown.
Sorry for my “life story” just wanted to say thank you for your channel to which I have just subscribed. RUclips obviously has seen me researching because it led me to you. Hi @Neurophysiology. I hope you are well. Going off topic quickly, is Benign Fasiculation syndrome a brain disorder? And what can be the causes? It’s just about 6 months ago I caught covid, and about a week later I took ketamine for the first time. 2 days later I woke up with involuntary twitching and myclonic jerks. A few days later it went, but the one thing that happened a few days after that, and has stuck ever since, is that both of my calves constantly twitch at rest, and it led me to having a mental breakdown. I paid to see a private neurologist and he told me that it is all anxiety related, as I am scared that using drugs once has ruined my whole life. I had an emg on my calves and it came back clear. Of course I’m not asking for medical advice over the internet. But in your opinion, do u think this can go away? And would something like Botox be a suitable treatment? Thanks

I seriously never thought of it this way. I've had this for more than a decade now. I switched high schools and took it real hard, super stressed and anxious. Thats when they started. They weren't that bad and I weren't concerned about them in particular. They'd come and go at varying intensity (most of the time they were not an issue) but then 10 years later I got into a relationship that was very stressful to say the least and lasted way longer than it should have. I noticed more and more getting consistent twitching. When the relationship finally ended last year twitching was through the roof. And instead of my anxiety going down, it seemed to just get transferred to focusing on twitching. Like you said, super aware of everytime my body moves. It's exhausting. How do you go back once you become super aware...

Thank you so much for this video. My husband has been twitching for around 9 months now. He's been always extremely anxious about stuff. Always overthinking even the most little things.
I think what scares him the most is the fact that his grandfather died of bulbar ALS. Even when the doctors said that it was because of the fact that he served in the army during war.
The twitches seemed to have started after him drinking for a few months. Since he had been dealing with severe anxiety, he found himself to feel more "chill" if he had a few beers everyday. Which I totally hated, but it was so hard to convince him to not do it.
Then the twitches started, and he totally stopped drinking. The twitches never went away tho. And that's when he started to fear the worst.
He kept saying that his left leg had atrophy because it looked different than the right leg. That lasted a few months. Then he said that even tho he had twitches all over, he felt really weird ones in his left ankle and thought the muscle was wasted. After he got over that, it was his shoulder that felt "weird". Then he had a little bit of cold and kept clearing his throat and attributed it to ALS. And the last spot that he feels uneasy about is his left hand! He says it looks different than the right one. That the creases are not the same. Which is true. But he doesn't take in consideration the fact that his thumb was almost cut of when he was a teenager. And his pinky also had an injury that never healed right. To this day he cannot extend it. It's forever bent.
He's scared of going to the doctor, and I can't convince him.
He has some good days. But the bad days are horrible. He gets incredibly pessimistic. And want to fit himself in all the rarest cases of ALS when the twitching came first. Or when it affects a very young person.
He's been doing pushups and he actually started by doing 40 every day and improved to the the point of doing 70 in a couple of weeks. Still, he thinks the worst.
I try to stay as positive as I can, but it's wearing on me so bad that sometimes I find myself believing all the things that he believes and thinking that he's truly sick. If it's bad for me, I can't imagine how bad it is for him.
I won't show my concern to him, because it will make it worse. But it's been hard.
    Any advise?
    Thank you in advance!

The best action is to speak with the Neuro, they are the only place to seek reassurance.
You’ve described a lot there but I’d also say work on the anxiety and stress, it may not be connected but if he is in a high state of anxiety it certainly won’t help matters.
Remember, we all get injuries and long term issues but it’s irrational to go to the worst possible case in your line of thought, that’s unhealthy and I suggest to work on that.
I hope he feels better soon.

One important thing I found during my online research is that ALS is not as common as we think. And it is not as common in younger people. Secondly, I developed my twitches when the pandemic put a pause to my heavy exercise routine. Instead of exercise, stress, sedentary lifestyle and physical exhaustion began to rule my life. I doubt ALS or anything similar can affect people who are active. I am worries about my condition but I am trying my level best to address it positively and give my body time to adjust...

@@appugiri he's got bad days and good days. It's been a year and half now with the twitches. Some days he'll go through without saying anything about them. Some days he comes up with a new "weird" thing that looks like ALS to him. Even in his good days, I can tell he's anxious, over reacting to little things for example, thinking the worst case scenario. He still doesn't want to go to the doctor. There's no way I can convince him. Every time I bring it up, he says he's scared and prefers to wait. "If three years pass and I'm ok, then I'll stop worrying about it". Which is ridiculous to me to live your life this way because you are afraid. It's no way of living.

Now I have both of these symptoms all the time. Is the small but very painful points jumping around a common symptom? Ive not heard that specifically referred to. hi, i hope its okay to ask. most of the videos i see of BFS talk about twitches that are quite fast or constant in one area... for me they are accompanied with internal vibrations starting first, but the twitches are random and most often a single twitch here and there, cheek, shoulder, back, bottom..sometimes a few... although in feet it could feel like a bit more activity... does BFS twitches change? does it evolve? or is it always the same kind of speed/ type? thank you in advance.

For me twitching started with the eyelid twitch two and a half years ago which lasted for over a month. In the meantime, I had it in both eyelids and in both eyes (sometimes it persisted for over a month in the same place), and sometimes it was present in index finger. Other than that, I'm having random twitches, but they are too random for me to take notice of them. I'm having regular checkups with neuro regarding migraines, I tried to bring this twitching thing up a couple of times, but he would just brushed it off as a psychosomatic thing. During the years, I stopped worrying about the eyelid twitches altogether.
Couple of days ago, a twitch started near the tip of my elbow (think this muscle is called anconeus). So I googled what could it mean, and of course I'm terrified ever since. So I have a couple of questions:
    1. (knowing that you're not a doctor) Does this look like BFS? I wasn't diagnosed, but it looks like that to me.
    2. Can these focal elbow twitches (without weakness and atrophy) could be indicator of something more sinister?
Thanks for the response and informative video.

Rowley Birkin Hi There, firstly sorry about the delay, your post was filtered to spam for some reason..
Ok, I don’t give any diagnosis’s as only doctors can do that but what I can do is share what I’ve observed over the years personally and in various support groups.
Twitching in BFS typically starts in one location and relatively quickly appears everywhere. Eye lids are really common even in people with no BFS.
If your worried about atrophy, just stop, you wood be noticeably weak if you had it.
      Never self test.
Please try not to worry and see your doctor if your concerned.
My video is here for practical clear advice, I’ll upload more videos over the Xmas holidays, take care.

They are completely random, don't get triggered by anything really and last as long as they want to. 1 second, 1 Minute, 1 hour, 1 day.
I've never had any muscle twitching till late September of 2023 and I now I have it and I just don't unterstand why. They are not constant. I twitch every day though. It's most annoying around the eye region for me.
