Neel Shah, MD, MPP, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, has been passionate about reducing costs and waste in the health care system since he started practicing. Why has the time come for value-based care? And what’s one easy way to identify waste in a system?

I completely agree and have been doing this type of improvement for years in industry and in healthcare. I was surprised when interviewing at a position at a prominent National children’s hospital that this kind of thinking was not allowed. Please don’t let improvement work become a religion. Go back, ask the people who work in the system what is wasteful. It’s part of a holistic improvement process. BTW I am an engineer with a masters degree and six sigma black belt certification. I was trained by Deming, so I know the importance of quantification also, as part of the voice of the system and profound knowledge.
