    My first dog, I got personally, was a mini dachshund. I had to put him down about four months ago, and it kills me to think I don't have him any longer. Watch Piglet's back, ours had two back surgeries, and we were told he needed a third, before we just couldn't put him through any more back pain. Just a note for any haters who might pick this comment apart, my fur baby was a rescue dog. He had been abused before I got him. I know the three years I had him were his best. He was loved beyond belief by us, so I really don't want to hear how I did him wrong. I didn't. I did everything in my power to love and care for him.

      Hey fleur . Piglet is the cutest dog I have ever seen . For the dog tag you really shouldn't put your dogs name on it because if they get lost and someone sees her and plans to steal her they can shout her name and she will respond however if it had say your last name on it she wouldn't respond to it and come to them.She is so cute and very soon I can see her and the other dogs being best friends . 😄

    She is so cute! I just wanted to say make sure she doesn't walk up and down stairs because that will hurt dachshunds back. I have 2 dachshunds and both bad to get back surgeries.

    • @FleurDeForce
      @FleurDeForce  10 лет назад +47

      Yeah, we did lots of research into their health problems with their backs and eyes, she's PRA Cord-1 clear and fingers crossed she won't have back problems - we've got her a little ramp for coming in and out of the back door and a stair gate too so she can't run up and down the stairs! Hope yours recovered ok :) xx

      @cassandrahodges27 10 лет назад +4

      ***** So glad to hear you did your research! I was going to comment about not running up/down stairs and another big one--jumping off the bed. I have a cockapoo who needed back surgery and was paralyzed in his back legs for two months before he started walking again. It's a miserable thing to go through and don't want it to happen to you! Piglet is adorable, congrats!

      Walking up stairs isn't bad for them, walking down, however, is. But they should be carried up and down the first few months because their skeleton is so soft and fragile.

    I have never owned a Dachshund but I fostered one through the rescue I volunteer at and I've never met a more snuggly dog!! He always wanted to be around me, we wanted to adopt him sooo bad but it just wasn't the right time for us so we fostered him until he found his forever home and it was so rewarding and wonderful. Enjoy your new bundle of joy!!

  • @micapetey
    @micapetey 10 лет назад +44

    Fleur, how big do you think a mini-dachshund will get? The bowl, harness and bed seem way too big for her, even when she's full-grown. Also, you need to put a divider into her crate while she's so small if you intend on using it for housebreaking. Dogs won't naturally poo and wee where they sleep, so if the crate is small, it encourages them to hold it until you take them outside. If the crate's too big, they'll just go relieve themselves in a far corner (same with a too big bed). Look for latex squeaky toys rather than plastic (like the custard cream toy) as they are almost indestructible. Puppy kongs are good too for those sharp little teeth. And an old trick but a good one--put a ticking clock near her bed, it will remind her of her mother's heartbeat and soothe her at night. At just eight weeks old, go ahead and pick her up or give her a cuddle when she cries. She's still adapting to major life changes and you want to reassure her. Enjoy! She's adorable.

      I have a Cairn terrier who is now 11 1/2 years old but still acts like a puppy. Terriers are so smart and have such big personalities. My best advice with your Westie is to quickly master the command "leave it" and to not play too roughly (tug-of-war games, etc. where the dog is encouraged to bite) as the little mites can be nippy. Just stop playing if he/she gets too rough or nippy and they'll quickly learn to play nicely.

    • @micapetey
      @micapetey 10 лет назад +1

      Dogs don't like the taste of citrus or bitter apple - you can either buy a bitter apple spray or fill a spray bottle with some lemon juice and water and when he tries to chew your shoes (or anything else you don't want chewed or picked up) spray by his mouth and say "No! Leave it" in a firm voice. By the second time, he'll learn and leave it alone.

      What she got is fine in terms of size . I had a dachshund and she grew quite big. I don't think that she will have any problems with the stuff being too big . The lead on the other hand may be too difficult for the pup to pull at sucks a young age .

      ***** That's true, but some breeders are actually very good and do it for the love of the breed. I never disown anyone for getting it from a breeder it's when they buy it from a pet store that I get pissed, but after working for The Pet Collective I learned there is a difference between good breeders and bad hopefully she got it from a breeder that doesn't do it for a ton of profit like some do. I got all my pets from shelters, but I also know how some people are breed specific as well it happens and most of the full bred dogs in shelters get picked up by rescues that specialize in that breed at least they do in LA all the time so at most people can still get a rescue, but that just depends on the person. It sounds like Fleur did her research from the comments though.

    I have a Doxie. He's 15
    Yrs old now. And I was lucky where he never had back issues, but you can't let them do stairs or couches. And you have to pick them up carefully. On a side note mine loves to be covered with anything. As long as his head is under he's fine. Maybe piglet would be more comfortable at night with a soft towel wrapped around a small ticking clock. Used to do that for my dog cAuse it was similar to mommas heartbeat.

    • @FleurDeForce
      @FleurDeForce  10 лет назад +17

      Jessica Jenean That's good he's still going strong at 15 - that's a great age for a dog! We've put a ramp by the backdoor for her and a stair gate, but I think the couch is going to be a little trickier, we may just have to make sure we keep the door shut when we aren't in there so we can make sure she's picked up if she wants to go on the sofa and can't jump on herself! (at the moment it's not a problem as she's so small she can't jump up on her own!!!

    I had a doxie named Princess who lived to be 13 and she had red dabbled short hair. Princess's favorite toys were soft plush ones and she loved taking walks around the block with her harness on. Princess would always burrow herself under many blanket every night, (it's a dachshund thing lol). She passed away last Mother's day due to a tumor near her heart. This past Mother's day my family and I adopted Sandi, a red short haired doxie, who's 12 years old! She is very full of energy and up to recently has had a clean bill of health. Sandi loves taking walks, eating, and getting lots and lots of cuddles. Sometimes when I come home from school we run around the house together! I love doxies they are a great breed of dogs! One piece of advice I would give with this breed is to give them their own blanket to chew on a burrow in and you will have a happy Dachshund!! P.S. Piglet is adorable!!! :)

    just so you know, be careful picking her up and stuff! if you pick her up lots from around her shoulders it could damage her back when she's older:( put a hand on her tummy and one supporting her bum because it'll be more supportive to her back. My auntie has a sausage dog and his back got really bad as he aged because of how they picked him up:( xxx

    ***** My family has been a Dachshund family for three generations (my children will be #4) so I feel qualified to offer a little advice about the breed. PLEASE, read the whole post, regardless of the length.
    Firstly, please do respond to her asking for attention while she is so young; doxies are very emotionally sensitive and ignoring her pleas teaches her that the two people in the world whom she SHOULD be able to rely upon will in fact refuse her emotional needs. She will become depressed and despondent, and in the future she will not be as willing to cooperate with you -- especially when training.
    Additionally, she doesn't need tiny toys. The smaller they are, the greater the risk of your other dogs choking and dying. Piglet will have very strong jaws and be able to handle the toys which are appropriately sized for the others. She will quite likely be a voracious chewer, so toys that meet her need to chew should be available for her.
    Baby gates! Piglet will become an active explorer, so she'll need to be protected from anything unsafe for her. This includes stairs. When you're upstairs, keep her with you and block the top of the staircase, same for the bottom. If she's been quiet too long, go find her! She'll undoubtedly be up to no good. Back injury prevention is paramount! She mustn't jump on or off of furniture or go up or down the stairs without being carried.
    If she is alerting you of something, pay attention. They are extremely reliable watch dogs. Also, she will likely choose either you or Mike as her person. They usually single out one family member to become the most attached to, and often feel distress when their person is absent for an extended time.
    Lastly (in this note, not in general,) be cautious about the small size of her throat and don't give her anything you wouldn't give to a baby, regarding choking hazards. Olives, grape tomatoes, hard candies are all perfect examples of items to cut into quarters.
    I wish your family and Piglet long, healthy and bountiful lives together! Congratulations on your new addition!

      Thats so cool! You asked about people wanting or not for you to do one, and I couldn't write a comment on my iPad (stupid ol'thing), so I just liked that video! I'm so glad you ARE going to do one. Your hair looks amazing, I sort of feel jealous of you - that color is really a dream of mine for years, but being a brunette, I don't have the guts to strip my hair so much....

    only 8 weeks old? that's way too early to pick her up and dissociate a puppy from his mummy. we have a tibetan spaniel and the breeder wouldn't give us the puppy before it's at least 3 months (12 weeks) old... i'm really sad that so many puppys are teared away from their family way too early... :(

    • @astraeaaa6
      @astraeaaa6 10 лет назад +13

      To be honest that's not too bad, as long as she wasn't picked up at like 6 weeks since sometime between 8-12 weeks is perfect for picking up the new pup and 6 weeks is when she's still kinda a bit wobbly and babyish if ya know what I mean. It's also better to get them earlyish as you can start the training and socialisation slightly earlier. :)

    • @jessicagraham10
      @jessicagraham10 10 лет назад +12

      It's better to take the puppy away at 8 weeks because in a lot of cases the mommy can't produce enough milk for the litter! Also she'll be well looked after and well loved at fleurs and that's really good for her :)

    • @banjobetty2250
      @banjobetty2250 10 лет назад +1

      I thought 8 weeks was too soon too (I only got my terrier pup at 3 months). Is the reason the mother keeps feeding them vital nutrients through her milk? Anyway Fleur and Mike seem to know what they are doing dogwise plus the pup will be around other dogs from the start and will obviously be adored so I think it will be one happy puppy.

    • @DaisyLocks
      @DaisyLocks 10 лет назад

      I do believe that 8 weeks old is the mark when you are able to pick up your little pets.

    • @CaseyLovell
      @CaseyLovell 10 лет назад +1

      It depends on what country or state you're from. In England and the US they can be picked up at 8 weeks if you register them before hand, but here in Australia we can't pick them up until they're 12 weeks, microchipped, and registered.

    Dachshunds are the best! I have 3 at the moment. Two are long haired and one is a short haired cream. The cream is a rescue surprisingly because they are rare. I've had 2 others that have passed on at 17 years and 12. The 12 year old had back issues throughout his life and at one time had a wheelchair. Miraculously he recovered but it would flare up at times. We don't have stairs except the deck stairs where they go outside. We also have stairs going up to the bed for the one that is a very needy girl and likes to sleep on the bed with us. Can't wait to see more Piglet!

    so it's a sausage dog, right ? You have to look out for her, they have a lot of problems with their spine and their legs when they grow up, because of the long torso. Poor dogs, I wish this breed didn't exist, so they didn't have to suffer that much.

    Hi Fleur, I have two 7 month old miniature dachshund boys called Thor and Loki. I also have 2 german shepherds, a male and female called Duke and Cherie, and they all live in perfect harmony together so try not to worry too much about Treacle and Squidge, they will all bond and learn how to interact with each other quickly.
    I use the XL Extreme Kongs for our dachshunds. They are the right size for them to fit their tongues into. I use them for all their meals and it exercises their minds when they are feeding and wears them out.
    Piglet is gorgeous x
