GREAT Video so THANK YOU ! Just a bit of "BONUS" Advice --> 1) Stuff a towel into the engine under the cam chain & spread it out. This will prevent anything from falling into the engine. Like the Spring, bolt of plastic pin etc .. for example 2 ) Use a small clamp or zip-tie to hold the assembly together & prevent the backing plate from separating after you remove the last bolt. 3 ) Clean the bolts with alcohol or light solvent & add a tiny bit of ( Loctite ) to each bolt before re-assembling. This will make it much less likely that any bolts will back out. This is a HUGE money saver. THANK GOD for RUclips !
this worked, saved over 400$ and a lot of work. The 2011 Honda CRV does not have a plastic part on the spring, not all have a plastic peace on spring. I used cardboard behind and a magnet from a hard drive to hold onto the spring. Take you time to double the springs size evenly. It made the noise for the first start lasted less than half as long. And indeed stopped and has not continued. THANKS YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
I had a P0011, and P1651, with loud rattling, can’t thank you enough! I saved $1800, I own a 2009 Honda Accord EXL with 88k miles, I went to Home Depot, bought 5 M60x30 bolts ($6.28), orange thread lock ($2.99), reused my original spring just stretched it and reinsert with new Home Depot screws with thread lock. Now all the codes went away and drives perfect again! The dealer was going to charge me for a new timing belt replacement, new actuator, new tensioner, whole new PZEV VVT, and oil change for $1800 without tax. Took me 30 minutes, Boom! Drove it and it was fine. It’s been 2 weeks now, drives normal and no rattling while start up and no rattling while driving! ❤❤❤❤
@gerxiong6299 there's a company called springzstart.com and they sell a stronger spring. When the rattle comes back, I suggest having this new spring ready for replacement.
Hi bro. How can you be certain that this is the actual issue, (the spring)? I saw another video doing the same fix, but why Honda can't come up with this simple fix? Thanks
All this work to fix a noise that literally doesn’t affect anything 😂 mine has been doing it for over 100,000 miles. It’s at almost 300,000 and still running great!
The only replacement option is to replace the entire gear. Stretching the spring is a quick fix. Not fixing this issue may add unwanted impact to timing components that may accelerate components wear.
I have a 2004 SiR with 150,000 mi on it. Only when temperatures get below freezing outside do I get a 1-2sec rattle. I got no codes or symptoms other then the rattle. What can happen if I leave it alone. I dont really need to drive it in real cold weather.
You have any experience on 2008 accord 2.4L? I have a neighbors I’m working on and can’t figure out the hard start with P2647 & P0962, throws code instantly and can’t get car out of limp mode. vetc pressure sensor is good
Well. One code is for the vtec solenoid and the other is for your transmission A solenoid pressure low. I suggest removing the vtec solenoid and inspecting for a clogged filter screen and checking for proper transmission fluid level and or correct honda transmission fluid.
@@jorgegarcia7005 thank you for the quick reply! I’ll pull it off again but pretty sure I checked at cleaned all the screens already, nothing looked blocked. You think replace the whole unit and would that cause a hard start? It originally cranks for a while, then runs a little rough at first but then idles normal up until around 3k rpm
Hey bro i did this job the way you are saying it by buying the spring start kit and installing it. The noise was still there. So i took it apart again and noticed the chain was loose when i would crank it by hand. Which lead me to think thats the real reason why it make the noise on start up but when it was fully warmed up it would go away. So i started overthinking and thought the gear wasnt locked in place i yanked on the cam clockwise and now i have a p0341 code. My first question is why wpuld my chain be loose? possiblly failing tensioner leading to a stretched chain? And what damage could i have done by yanking on the cam clockwise trying to lock a already locked gear? Note: the engine was already on the car the only thing that was apart was the valve cover nothing else was removed.
@yerrrrrr your chain should be fairly tight, if your tensioner is failing it can cause a rattle as well as the vtc. You should look at the k20z3 manual and look at the chain stretch tolerance. If I could post a picture of the measuring point I would.
Hi..my k20a engine got rattle sound at low rpm..i had change vtc pulley then the rattle sound gone.but after 2 weeks rattle sound comeback..any idea how to solve?
I read that VTC noise that occurs only during cold weather can be eliminated by installing a block heater. They had a Honda heater installed by the dealership. Does anyone know if this would work? I’d definitely try it, before having the VTC replaced, since the cost is over $800. Thanks.
i dont have the rattle on cold starts, but i get a rattle when revving it in quick burst to around 4-5k, timing was off a bit so i ordered a chain, gonna pull off the vtc tomorro, im just worried cuz everyone seems to get the rattle only on cold starts?? or can this happen upon acceleration?
It may be possible that you are not making enough oil pressure causing the cavity in the gear to lose oil until the pressure catches up. I would hook up an oil pressure gauge to test. A possible cause of low pressure would be piston oil squirters stuck open.
Now, being that I haven't heard the actual engine it also may be possible that you valves may need adjustment. Another possibility is that your vtc filter may be a bit clogged. I'm referring to the little square one behind the idler pulleys.
Hey my guy I have 2010 fg2 and have a similar problem and can show you a video do you have a insta where I can dm you ? I’m trying to figure out the issue and can’t and been asking everywhere
Spring-Start vtc has a kit with new VTC actuator springs and the bit included. The different kits they stock fit most Hondas and Acuras. There are instructions including torque and troubleshooting as well. We use 8ftlbs.
Mine didn't have any plastic piece, just a spring. Moreover my VTC was replaced according to bulletin. And problem repeated. Strenghtening the spring didn't solve the rattle

Legit.
That still working? The 2014 CRVs typically need a extreme VTC spring.
Thanks for posting, I’ll tackle this this weekend hopefully.

Probably bad oil squirters lowering oil pressure and the timing chain tensioner is loosing tension.

It may be possible that you need a valve adjustment.
How long does this stretched spring technique last?
Mine has been good for over 3 years.

Just replace the VTC actuator locking pin spring to save money, time and risk of timing upset. "springstart VTC'

I don't have any experience with that. Mine have never rattled during cold weather.
If it's a bad spring it will rattle when it's hot outside. The oil is at the bottom ok 😢it has a bad spring it will not pick up so it will rattle.
Torque for those bold 8Ft-lbs? or just snug i guess.
Yes, 96 in/lbs (8 ft/lbs) and replace the Torx with socket cap screws of hex flange bolts - size M6x1x30mm.
To remove the bolts, you need a 5 point T-30 tamper resistant bit socket.
So you don’t need to dead center your engine ?
@@imadfree no. You are not removing the timing chain.
@@jorgegarcia7005 thank you, I’ll do this today.

I would since you have access to adjust them.
What type of torx bit required to unscrew those bolts on the vtc sprocket?
TS30 (it is not 6 but 5 beam)
You need a 5 point T-30 bit socket
Is it recommended to fix ?
What size torq bit did you use?
T30
what's the Torque?
5 point T-30 bit socket (only)

No se, pero no he visto algo malo causado por esto.
