- It’s all about active listening. This means to listen with your full attention by being in the moment, to listen with your eyes by reading the person’s body language, and most importantly, to listen with your heart so that the other person feels understood. Sometimes what the other person says does not match what they mean. It comes down to three tips - 1. Listen with your attention. 2. Listen with your eyes. 3. Listen with your heart.
Stephen O’Keefe’s humorous and inspiring TEDx talk will help you listen better to connect with others. Stephen grew up deaf and doesn’t understand why people who can hear, don’t use their ears. Find out more about Stephen O’Keefe at stephenokeefe.net
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Humbling and humiliating for those of us who can hear well but listen poorly.
Thank you, Steve, for showing us that our disabilities are only as limiting as we make them.
You rock!
And thank you so much for all of your help. :-)
A hearing French worked with deaf employees at Airbus in Toulouse, France and wrote the book on most effective ways of communication, which the deaf people had developed over the years. The book primarly targets the hearing people who could benefit greatly from the deaf people.
The book is called _Deaf Tips_ by the author, Bruno Kahne.
Thank you Stephen for teaching us how to really listen, and for waking us to the things we take for granted every day! Excellent presentation.
Best video I've seen for Tedx!!! Great job!!! You are an inspiration. The world needs more people like you!! Bless you and your family
Thank you so much. The world will be a better place if we all listen. :-)
Thank you! Listening with all senses is wonderful!😀
Wow! Such an amazing video! Well done dad, we are so proud of you 🙂🤗
Thank you for all of your support. I could have not done it without you 😀 and you make me laugh everyday. I love you to the moon and back times ∞
The video is now captioned! :-)
You are a fantastic presenter and comedian!! You really know how to tell a captivating story, hold people’s attention, and keep them laughing at your jokes! I wish I had half your stage presence. Kudos :)
Love, love, love this Stephen! Entertaining and a powerful message. Thank you!!!
Thank you and it was wonderful to share the stage with you.
Amazing! Everyone should watch this!
Thanks!
Great Talk, I was honored to translate it to Polish - though it was not only translating, it was primaly more time with the speaker and great sense of his ideas.
Thank you so much for translating it into Polish. The more people learn to listen, the better.
Love it +Stephen O'Keefe. In relationships, so much is lost in translation because people don't listen. You've demonstrated magnificently the importance of actually listening in the moment. Delivery was brilliant and hilarious! Thank you!
Thank you and I am so glad to be part of the wonderful TEDxStanleyPark family.
Thank you Stephen, I really appreciate your perspective! I am certainly trying to improve my listening and thank you again for your insight!
Thank you :-)
Stephen you are a shining light of inspiration. We all have so much to learn from you! From the first day I met you - you put a smile on my face. Thank you for reminding me to listen with my entire body and soul when I truly needed that message!
Thank you and you were awesome in pumping me up before I started.
Great presentation and I laughed so much! Thanks for the motivation!! This clearly made my day
Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you for this! I learned so much. Fantastic ted talk!
Thank you and I'm delighted that you learned so much. :-)
Thank you very much for this!
And thank you for "listening" with your attention.
What an incredibly inspiring TedTalk on how to be a better listener, and presented with such great humour. The speaker, Stephen O'Keefe, narrows it down to three practical tips. I highly recommend taking the time to LISTEN to this TedTalk, and often, because we all need regular reminders on how to be better at listening and connecting to others.
Thank you so much for the kind words.
Brilliant talk. Such a talented man and an excellent sense of humour!
Thank you so much. :-)
I cannot say enough positive things about this presentation! It's funny, entertaining, and also very moving. As a hearing person, I'm ashamed of myself for doing a better job of listening.
Thank you. If we all listen better, the world will be a better place.
Very well said Stephen! I hear you 😀
that's the whole point of it. Thx. :-)
Nicely. Done. So well done!!!
Thank you. :-)
Bet no one will but that particular book, but it was a good prop.
Thank you Stephen - really wonderful advice delivered from the heart. Best thing I've seen online in a long time. (Did you ever find out what ACMB said?)
No. Argh! I asked Chris and he doesn't remember. Thing was that there were so many ACMB stories, and I wanted to know them all?! BTW, thank you for your comments - made my day.
Great presentation. Great job sir. You made me laugh but taught me a lot also.
All the best to you and family
Thank you. Am so glad you enjoyed it.
Well done, Stephen!
Thanks Marilyn. :-)
You are funny! Very good TED talk, good advice!
Thank you so much and I'm glad you liked my advice.
Hey guys the captions are really messed up and don't say anything he's saying. Any chance to get someone to fix them? -Signed a Deaf person
Hi Jessica, I am the speaker and I agree with you. it is so frustrating. I arranged for the captioning to get done weeks ago, and am still waiting for them to approve the captioning.
Thank you for doing that!!! Means so much! Can't wait to see it and share it with others!
Thanks. I hate it too when the videos aren't captioned properly.
Same here! I am trying to find a better way to reach out to people about this on RUclips and other websites. Unfortunately not everyone responds back. Still working on a better way. Thanks again for letting me know about the captions!
The video is now closed captioned. Yippee!
This was an awesome ted talk, couldn't really understand the accents though. :(
I'm glad you liked the talk, and I'm sorry you couldn't really understand the accents. You may want to turn on the English subtitles if it makes it easier for you to follow. Thx
fu zhouuuuu
I am a "hearing" person, married to a "deaf" person. That is the label people use to present us, or to refer to us. Not even our names, jobs, how we met, etc. We have much worse problems than our "hearing" or "deafness" conditions. We`ve experienced much more trascendental events that didn`t implied deafness nor hearing. Comunication, it's so much more than words, sounds...functional cochlea...this video? has re-enforced my conviction on that matter. So thank you.
You're welcome. Hearing loss is only a small part of the communication puzzle.
Indeed; communication is much more than the summ of it's individual components (Gestalt). Thanks again.
The subtitles aren’t available in English... which would be nice. Love -a deaf person
Austin Martin Hi. I’m not sure why you can’t see the subtitles. So far they’re captioned in 19 different languages including English. Look for the cc icon or the spoke icon in the lower right corner and you should be able to find them.
