I never rated that movie or M Night Shammalamadingdong and The Sixth Sense is still probably his 'best' movie (relatively speaking of course, since he's such a godawful writer) . If you listen to the commentary for the film, the writers liked the ad libbed scene better than what they’d written as well. The writers are actually the cops in that interrogation scene.
The writer of "The Usual Suspects", Christopher McQuarrie, has turned into a much better director than Singer. His directorial debut "The Way of the Gun" (which he also wrote) is a fantastic crime flick (if you haven't seen it, you guys should react to it) with a dark sense of humor and realistic action. Verbal told the story so well that the cop is trying to convince Verbal that it was Keaton. But when the victim of the con is convinced enough to sell you the con is real, you know you have him.
I saw this with friends when it came out in London. After watching it we got on the underground to go home. I looked up and started laughing. My friends asked what i was laughing at and all I could do was point. There was a poster for the movie on the train and some utter bastard had written "IT WAS HIM" in black marker with an arrow pointing to Kevin Spacey! If I had seen that before watching the film I would have been PISSED!
I met / waited on Kevin Spacey a few times while he was filming 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' in Savannah, GA @ 1997. Se7en and Usual Suspects having come out recently I thought I'd be more star struck, though didn't actually recognize him the firm time he came in (my co-worker she did). I worked at the main / local video store, comic shop, magazine + newspaper joint - Home Run Video. The second time he came in I was working alone and he did creep me out a bit (had heard rumors around town, lol)... and I was a young / 21, OK looking guy at the time, hah hah. I met a good bit of the cast at my job, and a few locals (Lady Chablis and others) that are part of the story. Anyway 'Midnight' might be worth checking out if you are on a Kevin Spacey kick. Oddly, I also met Nicholas Gage's parents who also lived in the Savannah area.
Watch it again. Watch it several times. With each viewing you'll see something you didn't see before. There's layers to the story, characters and details. Example...At the beginning you actually see when Soze is about to kill Keaton that he has a gold watch on and a gold lighter to light his smoke. They're the same ones at the end that the police property clerk gives back to him before he exits the station.
Verbal actually does slip up once while Kujan is in his face. He accidentally says "I did kill Keaton" but quickly covers it up by saying "I don't know what you're saying I did see Keaton get shot I swear to you."
This is such a great movie, even if I kinda suspected Kevin Spacey pretty early in the movie it's still awesome to see it all unfold, and they really stuck the ending. "Poof! He's gone."
When Verbal and Kujan are struggling in the office before Verbal says how do you shoot the devil in the back, Verbal says “I killed Keaton”, but it’s real quick.
This isn't a Kevin Spacy Movie but Could you check out the movie Circle, It should be on Netflix, It's a kind of Sci-Fi Thriller, I think it is a really good movie I think you would really like it. I hope you decide to react to it.
This is so confusing and quite frankly unbelievable to me...Jimmy Macram hasn't seen The Usual Suspects? This shit is right up your alley! What are you gonna tell us next? You've never seen Goodfellas? or Reservoir Dogs? How have you never seen this classic?
Try Lucky Number Slevin. Morgan Freeman. Ben Kingsley. Bruce Willis. Josh Hartnett. Lucy Liu. Stanley Tucci. Daniel Aiello. Dorian Missick. Mykelti Williamson. And a secondary cast of faces you’ve seen a hundred times. Brilliantly written, directed, acted and shot.
Greatest bit to me was the fact that nobody knew when filming who was Kaiser Sozay. The guy who played Keaton was pissed when he saw the final movie and he wasn’t Sozay. Lol.
In your free time you gotta watch with commentary. I would wait a bit to rewatch but, the commentary with Singer,Byrne and I think Baldwin is great. As dark as this movie is some of the commentary is hilarious.
When I first watched this, there were a lot of inconsistencies I saw but kind of just dismissed. It never occurred to me they were telling me something. A similar movie is Spanish Prisoner. Highly recommend it.
The story was real just the details were changed. The reveal or clue in the story that Verbal was Keyser Söze was when he was picked up by his assistant at the end and earlier when Verbal killed the man in the garage. The man froze and didn't give up the case, he possibly recognized Keyser Söze. Why would Verbal confess to murder while in a Police Department? Why did they not arrest him for the murder? Did he really tell them that part or were we just watching how it actually played out? Verbal wasn't talking at that point.
Kevin Spacey wasn't Kevin Spacey back then, so the twist was not obvious.

Great movie, as for Kevin Spacey I could careless what he does outside of the movies, great actor and I'll keep watching.
As for all the work Kevin Spacey has done in the past, I agree. But if he ever makes a new movie (which is highly doubtful) I will not go see it.
The BEST "twist" of the history of cinema! and "Six sense"
Dude, you should look into Berry Gordy's The Last dragon. It's amazing 80's kung fu cheesiness.
Sho NUF!!!!
Best film ever, and probably the only film I've ever seen that is better dubbed in french than in original english, I have no idea how they managed that but the french version is absurdly good.
I never get tired of seeing reactions to this twist.
👀 Some real unknown gems from b4 2000:
- Bad Lieutenant (1992) with Harvey Keitel
- Leon (1994) with Jean reno & Nathalie Portman
- Devil's Advocate (1997) with Al Pacino & Keanu Reeves
- Scent of a Woman (1992) with Al Pacino & Chris O'Donnell
- The Prophecy (1995) with Christopher Walken
- Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) with Forest Whitaker
- Ronin (1998) with Robert De Niro
Leon- one of the best movies of the 90s and hasn't aged at all.
So glad you reacted to this! One of my favorites.
Verbal told the story so well that the cop is trying to convince Verbal that it was Keaton. But when the victim of the con is convinced enough to sell you the con is real, you know you have him.
If you're keeping a list of things to watch, and going from ones you've liked, you might like are fight club, leon, lucky number slevin. and memento.
I love that they sat there speechless for a while afterwards. Excellent!
This is why we can't have nice things
That ending still gives me chills.
Great movie and one of, if not the best, twist endings ever.
What gave it away is when Verbal said at the end it was all Keatons idea when we know Verbal was “the man with the plan”
There was 2 language giveaways. Vrbl in Turkish means like leader or king. Kaiser in German, also means king or leader.
"Poof! He's gone."
La Confidential should Definetly be next one of his best films
Have you seen Boondock Saints?
oh yeah, an excellent one to do
You killing it with these reactions. The 1st I am going to join your patreon.
Good catch on the Pulp Fiction reference. I never caught that before.
I'm always jealous of those who watch The Usual Suspects for the first time. A masterclass in movie making:- its twist isn't a cheat.
Fantastic movie
Have you seen The Big Lebowski? I think you would enjoy it
When Verbal and Kujan are struggling in the office before Verbal says how do you shoot the devil in the back, Verbal says “I killed Keaton”, but it’s real quick.
I saw this at the cinema when it came out. Never guessed it. Well done....
I love seeing people's 'WTF!' reaction to that twist at the end!!
Hell yeah on the Reservoir Dogs!
he mentioned before that he has seen every scorsese movie and every tarantino movie. 😉
Such a great movie. And this cast was one of my favorite ensembles, Ever.
I'm very much looking forward to this reaction.👌👍
Kevin Spacey's performance in Seven is equally brilliant with this one!!
Surprised you hadn't seen this movie. Have you guys ever seen "Snatch"?
So glad you guys got mics!
This is an old movie and has been copied enough times that you're familiar with the twist without having seen it.
Try Lucky Number Slevin. Morgan Freeman. Ben Kingsley. Bruce Willis. Josh Hartnett. Lucy Liu. Stanley Tucci. Daniel Aiello. Dorian Missick. Mykelti Williamson. And a secondary cast of faces you’ve seen a hundred times. Brilliantly written, directed, acted and shot.
Literally one of my favorite movies of all time.
Greatest bit to me was the fact that nobody knew when filming who was Kaiser Sozay. The guy who played Keaton was pissed when he saw the final movie and he wasn’t Sozay. Lol.
Great job guys I e joyed the astonishment on your faces at the end well done chaps
One of my absolutely favorite movies of all time.
Y’all need to do Primal Fear
Watch the Big Lebowski!
Y'all check out the Key & Peele sketch "the world's worst liar"
Also the title Usual Suspects is from the last line in Casablanca.
Its one of my all time favorite endings of a movie
“ "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist,"
Should watch the show justified. Red foot is in the first ep of that also. Great show. Tommy O!!!
I'm surprised more people don't react to Justified. Or Misfits. Watch them both several times.
