    Sage - warming and drying, soothing
    Thyme - warming and drying, antioxidant, antispasmodic,
    Ginger - nausea, upset stomach
    Garlic - warming - good for cold, anti inflammatory, stimulate immune system, respiratory
    Rosemary - warming and drying, opens nasal congestion, antimicrobial

      Ginger will also warm the body and stave off hypothermia. Chew it all the time working in the cold

    I'm in Zone 7 and have successfully grown Ginger for the past 3 years.
    I start my Ginger from either small pieces (1-2") of the root from the previous season or new pieces from the grocery store which have little nodes starting to protrude. It is best started indoors in Feb/March in a warm/moist room, such as a bathroom. Place the pieces just below the soil surface with the node side up. Ginger does not require much sunlight, so keep it in a shaded area while indoors. In a month or so, there should be some shoots starting to pop through the soil. Once the outdoor temperature is above 80F in the daytime and at least 55F at night then you can plant in a container outdoors. Place in a mostly shaded area and keep moist throughout the summer. Too much sunlight will cause the leaves to die. By Sept/Oct you will have your Ginger crop ready to harvest. The cycle continues...
    I'm looking forward to making another batch of Ginger Beer.

      I recently harvested some ginger and made ginger beer with it. Any idea why it came out smelling like lactic acid bacteria? It tasted gingery but smelled and tasted off so I dumped it.

    There's a weed that everyone probably has in their yard, Plantain. There are two varieties common in the US. Plantago lanceolata and Plantago major. A syrup made from the leaves is as good for bronchitis/bronchiolitis and asthma. I used it when I had covid. An ointment, also made from the leaves, is good for eczema, poison ivy, and bee stings.

      I grow plantains everywhere in my gardens,,i dry the leaves and infuse them in quinoa vodka and strain after few weeks ,,i also infuse plantain leaves in coconut oil along with nettle ,marshmallow leaves,corn flowers,oregano,thyme,sage,mints,basil,calendula,chamomile all from my gardens and also some propolis from our hives then after weeks infusing i strain the leaves and keep the salve for any skin issues or as moisturizer.i have so many stories that propolis saved my family and my pets

    We also use oregano for cough, runny nose and othe flu syptoms. Just heat leaves over a gas flame, cool slightly and squeeze the juice into a spoon. Simple and VERY EFFECTIVE!!

      @@enlightenedone8874 No need to add water. Just heat and squeeze right into a teaspoon and drink. One teaspoon is enough per serving. 4 med to large leaves should be enough. If your leaves are smaller, you can use more to make 1 tsp.

    Use fennel seeds for period pains and to calm your nerves. They are muscles relaxants. It helps for abdominal cramps and relive anxiety.

    I live in Southern Ontario and grow ginger. Been doing so for about 3 years now. I took a piece of grocery store ginger that was organic and stuck it in dirt. I did this in February and in a good size pot. Then when the weather got warm I put it out side and let it grow. It actually did extremely well. I harvested in late Aug/Sept and got a decent amount of ginger.
    This past year I planted a piece from the harvest last year the same day I harvested it. It didn't look like it was going to grow or do anything but man it did better then ever. This Tim I let it go because we have had much warmer weather for a much longer time. So I only harvested my ginger about 2 weeks ago (yes the first couple weeks of October. If I could share pictures I would I was so happy with how much better the ginger grew this year. I even neglected it for a while. Try it and see if you can get it to grow. I live in zone 6

      @@rochelleandres7488 I am never afraid to try anything new. I was able to get luffa to grow but I did have to start it inside in February. I have my ginger already in dirt. You keep it wet for a while then let it completely dry then water lightly and it should get it started. This is the best time of year to get it started as it too has and needs a long grow season. I get it out side in May usually as long as the frost is gone

      @@donnatonner2865 good luck. I would get a piece now. If you can find a piece that looks like it has an eye or 2. A bit harder to fins but will be a better start and greater success. I would also get it planted now if you can. I am waiting on mine to start growing again. It takes so long in the waiting for something to grow up. But it is worth the wait

    Put a slice of red onion in the tray that you sprout the piece of ginger in. Layer a moist piece of paper towel on top of the onion, then your piece of ginger, then a second piece of moist paper towel. Darkness will help, within a week, the piece of ginger will break its dormancy and begin to sprout 🌱. I am a “newbie” at this, I discovered it by accident in my compost can.

      Essential oregano oil is successful for almost everything
      I had black mold respiratory problems after Hurricane Andrew for 3 mths and it was getting worse.
      Gargled with 10 drops in 8 oz water. (That's strong, but I was desperate.)

      I gargled 8-10x a day with strong oregano water (10 drops in 8 oz water) for respiratory problems breathing black mold after the 2017 hurricane. It cleated up in one week.
      I had it 3 mths. Antibiotics from doc did nothing.
      It clears up my skin. But i use it weak. 5 drops oregano oil in 8 oz water.

    Sage there is three types red, white and rubbing sage. Red is medicinal white is for cleansing and rubbing is to eat.

    We should rewrite the Simon and Garfunkal song to Garlic, sage, rosemary and thyme. lol I didnt realize ginger thinned the blood. I take ginger in capsule every day, I was getting concerned that every time I scratch or slightly cut myself while working I seem to bleed more than is normal. Now I know why. I wont stop taking it but now will not worry there is something wrong with me if I bleed from a minor scratch. lol

    I was told by a homeopathic doctor to dip ginger in honey and bite it every four hours for the onset of what I thought was the Sweet n Sour sniffles. It worked in addition to Vitamin C and Zinc.

      I cover my rosemary w straw successful. Zone 5. We love rosemary, and experiment. We have brought it for the winter...back out in spring. Worked well.

      I live in Western Michigan and cover my Rosemary, sage, thyme, Lemon Balm from the winter cold and they return in the spring.

    I grow rosemary and thyme. Making rosemary tea for headaches worked great. Then thyme tea as soon as you feel a sore throat or cough coming on.

    Timestamp 10:45 - I've finally been successful at getting some of these to sprout in a container in the kitchen. Every evening when I get home, I check for additional growth. I'm so looking forward to having these growing and looking beautiful on my kitchen counter.

    Thyme is also a GREAT insecticide that is safe to use around pets.
    Original listerine has it. And my favorite now discontinued hand sanitizer had it. Cleanwell.
    7th generation also has it in their disinfectant.

    We used to not very long ago know these wisdoms, just ask Grandma and Grandpa. If your's are gone, ask a elderly friend. Herbs have been healing me and all my relation's for 45 year's. My very favorite is for an earache. Peel a clove cut off a bit of 1 tip, place it in your ear and go to bed. You think it might sting, but it doesn't. Best if just kind of push it gently in so it loosely stays there and lay down, but because I was a young mom I found using a bandaid worked pretty well, so I could still be functional. Love to all

    My daughter's favorite herb is rosemary. She loves the feel and smell of sage. She picks sage leaves and calls them sniffy leaves. I am really enjoying these videos. I am trying to learn more about medicinal uses for herbs and flowers. This was my first year harvesting nasturium, verbena and calendula for tea. I grow my own herbs for cooking, but just starting to learn about medicinal uses. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

      Me & my grandkids love picking a leaf or 2 of sage & a lil snip of rosemary! ❤ Then they wander out front to raid my mints & lavender. Grabbing strawberries on the way! The youngest little man is an awesome compost helper! They all learn & have fun enjoying the rewards!

      @@siry5164 I’m in your zone (Florida). Rosemary grows in the ground year round here. It will get 6 feet tall. Most herbs do well in the spring here, in dappled light. I grow my herbs in clay pots. They do great. Basil loves our hot summer sun. I grow Thai basil year round.

      Something I've learned, for what it's worth: young ginger (thin easily removed skin) has cooling properties when ingested; taken during the summer months it helps to keep you cooler in the heat. Old ginger (thick skin) has warming properties when ingested; helps along with cayenne to keep you warm in the cold.
      Both have the same pain relieving properties, but old ginger is more potent.
      I used the old ginger and cayenne when we had our freak freeze in Texas to help me stay warm.
      And for one month I was able to find young ginger to help me stay cooler. It for sure works as I tend to heat up easily in hot months.

    Great vid. All winter long I make homemade chicken soup with fresh chunks of ginger, rosemary and thyme and Tumeric adding onions, carrots and whole chicken in the insta pot. Super immune boosting and we love the potency of the fresh ginger. Low sodium as well just use water as if you use enough spices/ herbs you don’t need the salt but if you like some chicken. Broth to add that’s ok too. Eat it as soon as any symptoms arise. Love your videos 🙏🙏😊😊

    OLD LEATHER SMITH here, I grow Rosemary in a PVC 12" ring. I planted it 4 years ago. During the ice storm last year in Texas the Rosemary seemed 2 spread out, it is now 4' tall and 4' around and still growing Very well, it's on the Westside of the House, sees Sun 1/2 the day.       @@candacekuhn8589 OLD LEATHER SMITH here, I bought 2 12" inside diameter, drainage PVC pipes, which I cut into 4' lengths 2 store my leather in. I had a 6" long piece left over which I used as planters 4 hot peppers and herbs. I pray that answers your question, if not ask again and I will explain it a different way. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

    What a coincidence. I was just discussing how to use our pots this year because I'm gonna fill EVERYTHING up! I put rosemary and other herbs in a raised bed herb garden and covered w/plastic in hopes of overwintering. Not sure what it looks like yet but this year I will plant my kitchen herbs in containers and move them around as described. Thanks! New to the channel, I'm loving it.

    FYI - thyme is an excellent anti-fungal. A tincture made from thyme and vodka makes a pretty good treatment for athlete's foot. Also good as a deodorant.

      The garlic can soak in the honey. The honey is antibacterial and antimicrobial so you can let it sit in a pantry or out. Also when you take it you can use it in tea or by the spoon, but don’t use metal with it as the metal can break up the properties, you can use glass, wood, plastic etc. but not metal. A little lime or lemon is also good with that honey with garlic.

      I also have used a pot to try and over winter and it didn't work. The black pot idea and having it on the southern wall may make it work next time. May wrap it also.

    I have been growing ginger indoors… I plan on doing it outdoors next year. I go through about 1 lb a month.

    Ginger and turmeric can grow together and are very easy to grow, but in pnw does better as a greenhouse grow.

    good info. I had the same problem with Rosemary, winter would see it off and I couldnt grow it. However I grew it in a sheltered area in my garden and it made it through. For insurance I started to take cuttings. This turned out to be really easy and ended up with so many plants that I gave loads away to friends. My method super easy. Cut about a 6 inch tip or pick off a branching piece. Strip the cutting by about 2 inches at the bottom and pop it into a small glass of water on a sunny windowsill. In about a month you should have roots enough to pot up. I do it all the time with 6 or 7 cuttings. You cant lose it then. one more thing change the water every week.

    I have been using crushed clove for my pain from a broken tooth that broke near the gum line. Apply directly to the area to numb the nerves until you can get to the dentist. Thanks grandma!

    Believe it or not the best thing I ever found for sore throat,
    Make a water of tea tree oil.
    8 fl ounces water and 10 drops of tea tree oil.
    Close bottle tightly shake well and gargle.
    Beats warm salt water or sage tea. In my opinion

    I have this powder mix of ginger, cinnamon, clove, turmeric, pink salt, and black pepper. If I have a head ache I take an 1/8 of a tea spn in warm water and I am good. I knocked my head off one day and had a lump on my forehead, took my mix and I was just fine, no pain.

    Watch sage consumption if you’re lactating. It diminishes milk supply. It was very useful for me in my drying up experience. Fresh sage, salt &pepper on a chicken breast for a couple days was very helpful.

      It's a bread box with drawers on top for flour, sugar, tea and coffee. It's from the 1950's

    I came here for an Advil alternative! Did I miss something because I didn't hear it? I have used feverfew tinctures for inflammation in my body. It works great but it never works for my headaches nor have any of the herbs you've mentioned.

      Advil is an anti inflammatory so instead of it you can use these other herbs

      Did you make sure to include rhizomes (bumps) and take a 1 1/2 - 2" piece - and not bury it too awful deep? Speaking from experience. :)

    Nice to see your reference to herbs worth taking in capsules. The three, sage, thyme, and rosemary have essential oils worth taking all your life, for when they are released into the stomach and intestines -- go directly into the blood steam to be used by all cell communities. But as they are traveling through the blood, they attach to foreign intruders, as in bacteria and capture fungus spores floating about. Once they can carry no more fungus spores, they exit the body via urinary system. In regards to attaching to bacteria -- they drill holes into their outer shells, and soon begin leaking -- which by the way gets them "eaten up" pronto by the immune system. These three herbs can be made into a body and mouth wash too.

    Hi Melissa! I just came across your videos about medicinal herbs, and I love your site with tutorial videos! Thank your for sharing!! You are so knowledgeable and inspiring to listen to, with so much amazing information! You make me want to grow all those herbs and flowers!!
    I have a question for you that I'm hoping you can shed some light on:
    I made my first liquid stevia sweetener using fresh leaves from my 2 stevia plants in my garden. I watched several videos on how to prepare the liquid sweetener- which is basically the same procedure as with herbal tinctures- using vodka to marinate in, but for stevia, no more than 24- 36 hours or it becomes more bitter than sweet.
    I made 2 batches (to test the difference in using) one with fresh, slightly chopped leaves; the other with fresh, whole leaves, both marinated in vodka for 28.5 hours. Both were strained with cheesecloth, and then each one was put on a VERY slow, miniscule bubbled simmer for 10 minutes; they both still smelled VERY STRONG of alcohol, so I added another 10 minutes; all recipes I found gave it 10-20 minutes, one suggested 30 minutes, all stressing NOT to hard boil the liquid or you sacrifice the sweet taste, as well as evaporating all the liquid out. Since the directions stated that ‘you’ll know when it is finished (how long to simmer) based on when you no longer smell the alcohol’, and mine STILL reeked of the alcohol, I left it in total up to 30 minutes.
    At this point, I just turned it off since half the liquid was already evaporated out (which was expected to happen), but in my opinion, it STILL smelled too strong of alcohol!
    I’m not sure what I did wrong or if it’s just me that feels super nauseated and sick to my stomach from smelling (checking) if the alcohol was sufficiently evaporating out during this 30 minute process?
    I really wanted to love this new found independence on growing Stevia plants, and making my own stevia liquid sweetener, but after trying the finished product, I am very disappointed!
    The taste is sweet enough on my finger- even if a bit on the alcohol side, but when I put SEVERAL drops in my cup of coffee (which I usually use just a couple drops of Sweetleaf Stevia Clear liquid or powder form), it doesn’t taste at all sweet! I have to keep adding more and more to get a slight ‘earthy’ type taste (not sure how else to describe it); it tastes from 0 sweetness to terrible, and left me with such a nauseated, sick feeling- probably from the alcohol, that I couldn’t even drink my coffee or eat anything afterwards! I had to make a chamomile tea to settle my stomach.
    I know this probably sounds a little dramatic, but I am severely disappointed and trying to understand where I went wrong.
    In your experience and educated opinion, do you think I didn’t have the bubbles high enough to evaporate all the alcohol sufficiently out or is it ‘normal’ to have somewhat of an alcohol base taste to Stevia/ herbal tinctures?
    Or is it possible then that it’s just me who perhaps is not able to use and consume tinctures, teas, etc. made using alcohol as the marinating medium?
    I saw some videos on the option of using glycerin instead, but am very weary about using a sugary syrup to make them; I would rather prefer staying away from sugars (unless natural and low glycemic- which is why I love Stevia, but not the chemically processed ones!)
    Isn’t there an option for using purified water to make herbal teas and tinctures for consuming?
    Or perhaps if I’m just making herbal salves and topical creams, I could still use the vodka alcohol as my marinade, as long as I understand how, and for how long, to properly simmer out the alcohol.
    Thank you for any information and help you can offer me. I love so much your videos and am very inspired to continue to learn about medicinal herbs so I, too, can help myself and others. We are in a very important time now to return to God’s nature and utilize the gifts we were given, freeing ourselves from toxic pharmaceutical dependence- especially for ‘non emergency’ home health remedies.

    I've tried to overwinter Rosemary without success. I might try a cold frame on a south-facing wall to see if I can keep it planted in sweet mother earth.

      If it is any help to you, I am on the East coast of Scotland. My neighbour had a Rosemary shrub situated in a South Westerly aspect that survived and thrived for many years, until new neighbour removed it. The Rosemary was incorporated within a row of shrubs, its immediate neighbour was a tall rose bush. The Rosemary survived gale force winds, sub zero temperatures, and snow that lay on it for six weeks.
      I recall Monty Don(Gardeners World) saying that, the more you neglect your herbs, the more they will give.

      Just put some rosemary in a pot of water bring it to a boil & breathe the steam.

      I have a BUNCH of sage, I just planted a small plant a few years ago and it lasts year round now. But for me, some times in the year I'll walk by it and I think "who's cooking sausage?" then realize it's the sage 😂

      Mine is very aromatic and smells strong of sage. If your's doesn't smell like sage (it should smell when the leaves are rubbed) I would look into getting a different variety, best if you can go to the nursery and pick one you can test smell 😊

      Look for culinary sage. Stay away from sativa sage plants aside from ornamental planting.

    I just took the outer skins of onions today and made a tea. It tasted like French onion soup but it wasn't too bad... the benefits are amazing I guess.

    My mom does well with rosemary she has a green thumb IDKH though she isn't great at all things outdoors like trimming bushes but growing plants they love her. We live in Massachusetts it's def cold here but she has more rosemary than anything else it actually does well in her rock garden.

    Thumbs down from the pharmaceutical companies! LOL, one note, garlic can also thin the blood. I make a minced garlic and raw honey mixture and store it in the fridge and take spoonful when I feel something coming on.

    I need to bring more of these herbs to the office with me for the days I'm cooking lunch. Winter seems to have arrived early this year. I've already begun cooking beans and soups for our staff.

      I just watch Dr Malone, on the internal Covid summit. He advised check blood level Vitamin D and take theses over winter to help protect from Covid. This is why we get winter flu and colds low sunlight therefore low but D levels.

      @@sarajillianshepherd3858 Very true. My mom for years has told her patients to supplement Vitamin D, Vitamin C, B-complex, zinc, magnesium, and manganese - especially during virus season. Most of us don't eat foods with enough of these nutrients. A few days ago, someone was telling me that my 6yo didn't need to be drinking as much milk as she does, but that is one of the dietary sources of Vitamin D these days.
