    The clarity of your explanation, coupled with the images you use, make this one of the most helpful watercolour videos I've ever watched to date. Thank you.

    Your explanation is great and supplemental demos really show what you are saying, and I appreciate the tip of the hat to Andy Evansen.

    Excellent demo and advice, Matt! Man- I'm a sucker for old trucks. I love the subject here :)

    I never really thought about stage 2 as blocking in the larger shapes. That makes so much sense although I was rather surprised you painted the mid values over the tree, but that worked as the tree was of darker value. Eye opening process and so simple like 1, 2, 3 - lol! 🥰

    Hi ! I'm a beginner and I've just discovered your channel a few weeks ago.
    All of your videos I watched were helpful ! Thank you so much for your work.
    Watercolor is a different way to paint and I started it to make some cards for the people I love. This little format is not easy, but I keep to try it again and again.
    Thank you again for all of these tips.
    Have a nice day.

    I'd love to see you paint a beachscape. How would you handle the light and shadows. No mountains around it.

    Thanks Matthew for this helpful video. I struggle a lot with mountain scenes (my interest is painting the rugged and glaciated Canadian Rockies, as I’ve been there many times). I tried using wet-on-wet and tried to follow the steps, but my mountain paintings are either a disaster or they don’t look like a watercolour painting. It’s not just the mountains, but also the forests and lakes below them that I also struggle with, especially when attempting to portray distance and control detail.

    I cannot believe that I've only just found you. You explain things so well! PLEASE PLEASE can you explain more about how wet to have the paper and when to let the paper dry, it throws me every time. Do I let it dry between 1st and 2nd wash? I get bad water marks and it ruins my work. What am I doing wrong please?

    Good lesson, Matthew. My problem is with connecting the middle values when they are disjointed in the reference. Is it better alter the scene to obey the rule at the cost being less like the photograph?
    Nobody seems to address matting and framing their watercolors. I’ve found a dark mat seems to add a fourth value layer to the scene.

    Thank you, Matthew, for the great and succinct explanation. Just a little clarification though-do you let the first wash dry before the second? I’m sure the 2nd must be dry before the details but I’m not sure about that first wash. Thank you. (I’m not actually painting scenes yet as I have gone back to basics and am starting over. I do save these for future reference though as you do such a good job.)

    For some reason I find it difficult to paint things where my brain tells me that there is one color on top of the other in real life: Part of something in light/shade, the sand below the surface of water, ... 🤔

    • @artericson
      @artericson 2 года назад

      It definitely takes practice, but once you understand that watercolor dries a lot lighter than when you put the paint down then I think you'll start to understand the process.

    • @chatita9527

      @@artericson Hi, thanks but I mean this in a different way. For example, I have sand on the beach, and the a part below really light bluish water. I struggle to decide wether I should paint the sand and then glaze light bluish water over it (like in the real world there are two layers), OR should I attempt to mix the color of the sand + the water as one layer. Same with shades. Do I take the color of the object and put a greyish layer on top as a second layer, or do I mix the color as one layer where the shade is on top of an object? 🤔 Best regards from Berlin Germany 😁

    • @artericson
      @artericson 2 года назад +1

      @@chatita9527 I see what your saying! I would put your sand color down first (let it dry) and then mix your "ocean colors" (add a little more water to your ocean color mixture) so you create a transparent ocean glaze over the top of your sand colors so you can still see the sand below the water just like in real life. Its always a balancing act! experiment!

    • @chatita9527
      @chatita9527 2 года назад

      @@artericson OK, thank you for your opinion. So you would glaze over it ... 🤔 I will have to try, because sometimes it work fine and sometimes the layer below comes off a bit and smears into the second layer ... 🙄
