cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video, LOVE mine for years. I carry with the Mec Gar 18 round mags. Just yesterday I got to the range and just insanely accurate as always. Yes I have 'new' handguns, but the Sig 226 220 229 are staying with me.
W. German 1988 vintage P226 here. Best $300 I've ever spent. That trigger is amazing.

I inherited my fathers sig p226. The one he used when he was with the sheriffs department. He has sense retired and passed. Definitely agree with you, what a fantastic gun.
I scored a West German made Sig P226 in a pawnshop back in June this year and I love it. Excellent piece of military history and just historical in general being marked West German. Definitely going to be in my collection for life and I’ve actually been daily carrying it since I got it. Love your content! Keep it up guys! PS I really need some grip screws but haven’t had any luck. Have ordered multiple sets and they’re all too large in diameter for the older guns

Iraqveteran8888 I too am the proud owner of one of the older Sig P226 in 9mm. Mine is one of the German made models with a factory nickel slide. It has had a extensive trigger job and it is a real pleasure to shoot. Thanks so very much for sharing your knowledge and your thoughts with us!
My first gun purchase was a MK25 P226 and it is my everyday carry. Love the pistol. A few months after that purchase I bought a used German P220.
I am in love with my classic German p226, it has never let me down. I have let very few friends fire my pistol and each one has went hunting for their own to enjoy, and believe me it is a joy to fire and take down for cleaning. 226 for life.

My duty gun p226, brought me home one night! I'll always have it. Just cleaned it and put new night sights on it this week. Bought in 1980 or so? Still great today!

Eric, I have. A Sig P6, a single stack W.German 9mm. Looks eerily similar to the 226. Really accurate firearm and a keeper. Shoots most all HP,s except Hornady.
Also known as the P225, they are basically a single stack P226, great guns, allot of them were German Police sidearms

Few people know that several times a year the Sig Custom Shop offers deep discounts on the price of working on your Sig pistols. Back in 2012 I sent my police trade in Sig P229 .40 S&W in for some custom work done on my P229. I had the custom shop do the Action Enhancement Package, Night Sight Package (SIGLITE), Short Reset Trigger package, and their Full Service Package done to my pistol. It took less than 10 days to have my pistol shipped to Sig and back to me. They also polished the feed ramp while they had the pistol there for no charge. At the time my Sig was over 10 years old and the night sights were nonexistent. All in all I ended up with pretty much a brand new P229 (except for wear and tear of course) for several hundred dollars cheaper than a brand new P229 thanks to the discounts. This is my carry pistol and I trust my life with it.
Back in the 80s this was the best and also one of the very expensive pistols. Great memories.

The "Lyson's Corner" 226 9mm are very rare! The story from Sig Sauer Germany is that 200 of the first batch had the miss print on the frame instead of Tyson's Corner and about 70 where shipped by mistake to the US before it was caught, Sig destroyed the rest. It's only going to keep going up in valve.
My 226 in .357 Sig is my most cherished handgun, thank you for this, peace.

I bought a West German made P 226 in 1992. They are considered a West German pure version if manufactured date is before 3 October 1995. They also have several distinct features from the ones manufactured after 1995 and the US: Serial # is engraved in three places: slide, receiver and barrel; there are no plastic parts (such as the new style short mainspring seat or recoil spring guide) they have proof marks of place and year of manufacture (mine has made in Kiel in 1991 marks) and the pistols are engraved "Made in W. Germany". Recently, I change mainspring strut, mainspring and seat with current versions and reduced the factory original spring from 24 Lbs in W German pistols to anywhere from 16 lbs to 21 lbs (current factory is 21 lbs and I installed an 18 lbs spring). If you like the 24 lbs spring, then you love the 21 lbs or an 18 lbs spring. I also changed the original trigger bar spring for the looped current version and new stocks. It is still the same pistol but with great DA pull and slightly lower SA pull.The changes made a great pistol even better. I had to do something similar to my 1986 Beretta 92 F. My hand are now 68 years old and the 15 lbs trigger DA pulls are not conducive to good shooting, specially if you have suffered from trigger finger (stenosis of the tendon channel) which weaken the index finger. I am a retired federal LEO and I like to shoot the first round in DA with semi autos and DA with revolvers. I like my Beretta 92 but my W German P 226 is a classic jewel. Enjoy yours, I think they are better made.

I've had a p226 W. German pistol forever. Mine was one of those factory certified trade ins that come with that Sig band around the grip. I always really liked it, but over time Glock 17 offered consistent trigger pull, low bore axis and higher mag capacity. Well now you can get the SRT trigger, MecGar 18rd mags and the E1 grip, to fix all these issues. Made it an amazing pistol all over again. I thought it was amazing how Sig was able offer such a huge upgrade with just drop in parts. I highly recommend this sort of refresh. Way lighter as an old W. German, vs the new billet slide with railed frame too.

Had mine in 40 S&W for a dozen years - marvelous pistol. Never had it stick or fail using top notch ammo. Just don't cram crummy ammo down its throat - of course no steel cases, jams it tight.
Having owned both WG and newer versions of the 226, all I can say is they're damn nice guns. Trying to say one is better than the other would be hard for me as I've not had one I didn't really like. The Sig platform is top of the line.
The P 226 has a much wider an better holding grip then my good old 1911, I want one!
I have that same model. Same wear marks on the gun too. Loved it back when I still shot all the time. I haven't shot it in many years though.
The Sig, 226, is an awesome pistol, as is the 228, and one of my family’s favorite pistols, the P-6 (225)!
I have a 2nd model P226 police trade in , still want a 3rd model with the rail mount and 3 dot tritium night sights. I have fired alot of handguns but the 226 is the Cadillac of them all.

Love that t shirt. Just got a Sig 320. I have other Sigs n never a problem, eats all the ammo, accurate enough for me, a hobbyist. Pricy guns but worth it.

Even guys that shoot a lot anticipate recoil. Saw Eric do it here. Also for the slide lock issue just scratch the springs in the mags back out. It's from sitting loaded for years

Some Officers and Counter-Intel guys were issued the P226 in Iraq in 2010-2011 (as the M11). I found it to be MUCH more comfortable than the M9 and, while both work well for me, I prefer the SIG.
I got one in DAK and love it, probably getting one in DA/SA soon
Considering the p226 has been the British SAS choice of sidearm for many years proves how good it is.

These are awesome guns, and the LEO trade in option is a good way for a blue collar schmuck like me to get his paws on one. I have a LEO trade in G22 I bought for $299 a couple years ago and it has been an outstanding gun. Man, you gotta love the P226!
The Sig P226 and P220 were my duty weapons during my tenure with INS.

I have a p226 and I love it. I have a glock 17 and a glock 21 but the p226 is a superior gun as far as accuracy and trigger pull.

I love my P226. Mine has the German frame with an American made slide and is in .357SIG and I have the .40S&W barrel for easy caliber swaps. I have always wanted a All German version of the 226. I regret selling my P220 in .38Super.

I picked up a used 228 from a local pawn shop and it is one of my favorite guns to shoot. Made in Germany 1995 from searching the serial number.
Bought a lightly used (police trade in) West German P226 for $350...have put many thousands of rounds through it and it has worked pretty much flawlessly for over 15 years...will never sell it.
Just picked up a West German made, LE trade in last week, from my FLGS! ( No importation marks on it.) Came with 5 magazines & a Safariland holster. $595 out the door!!
Get one of these surplus pistols for a bargain, get an aftermarket trigger and sights of one's liking and get the piece robarized or cerrakoted and you'll have an uberkuhl 9mm handgun for sure.. I'd love one..
I have a Legion SAO P226, and two P229’s in .40 S&W. They’re great pistols, and all have the SRT. The LGS has a few stamped slide German made P series, and I’m considering getting one.
Edit: I have two M9’s and a 92 Compact, with every WC upgrade I could install. I really can’t say which brand I prefer, and carry them all.

The price was one issue in choosing the M9. Additionally, early warning middle detection bases in Italy played a role, Sig refused to put a plant in the USA and the lack of an manuel safety played a major role in the decision.
I shot the M9 from 86-99 and it wasn't anywhere near the Sig in any area. I can recall having major issues with the Slides coming off. One one if my deployments to the Far East we had to keep round counts on our M9's and they had to be xrayed after 1000 rounds.
Keep in mind folks the military buys from the lowest bidder. Inhave owned my 89 Sig for almost 30 years and it still does it's job.

eric i love how this gun has exeter NH on it i live in Epping NH and sig has there test and training range in are town im not a fan of the new 320s but i do love what they do i actual live only about 900 yards away from the end of the range lol
The P220 started off as a 9mm. Sigs had slide breaks as did the M9 when using proof loaded ammo.
About 8 years ago I bought a new P226R Tactical (Made in US/NH), paid just over 1K for it and I will have to say I was disappointed to discover that the slide rattles when shaken. Can't even compare to a W. German made P228 that I boght back in 94' with over 1K rounds...
So, yeah! in my experience old European imports are definitely a better build.

Hey Eric, nice to see a good oldie like the P226 in your reviews. I´m from germany and about to buy my first own handgun (the process to get a gun here is a real pain in the ass...you americans dont have any idea how lucky you actually are!) I´d like to see a re-review of the standard HK USP in 9mm. I know you had this gun a while ago in a review, but i´d enjoy a review in the new style of IV8888 very much. These guns are extremly well made, reliable as hell and one of the first polymer handguns out there. Keep up the good work!
A good number of us know exactly how good we have it, which is why we vehemently oppose more restrictions.
As I understand it both the Beretta and the Sig passed the acceptance trials with flying colors. The best of the two being the Sig 226. The decision came down to the Beretta being about $25 per gun cheaper than the Sig. Since both passed all the requirements of the test, the Beretta won the contract at a substantial savings to the American taxpayer. Love them both and every pistol buff should have at least one of each

Beretta famously dropped their price 18% at the last minute, but even with that drop, they were more expensive then sig. There is a lot of interesting history around this trial and all the supposedly shady shit that went down. Price leaks, foreign government pressure...crazy stuff.

The June 1986 GAOs "Report to the Committee on Governemnet Operations" titled "PISTOL PROCUREMENT: Allegations on Army Selection of Beretta 9-mm. as Standard DOD Sidearm" is super interesting and contains a ton of info. It's available to download as a pdf and is well worth the read.
For example, the Sig was 50% more reliable overall then Beretta (Sig P226 scored a 2,877 to the Beretta's 1,750 to the Colt M1911A1s 162. The numbers reflect the average number of rounds fired between stoppages). And they still picked the LESS reliable, MORE expensive Beretta! Insanity...
put a SRT trigger in there. and replace the sights. I'd also change all the springs out.

and yes I had a 320 until I sold it to get the Canik TP9sa, found it to handle better for me, both insanely accurate, but I LOVE my 226
After shooting both, 226 has a certain type of feel that is just better. I still love baretta but sig is very well build and ergonomics wise, is great

I think the age and amount of use that pistol has had, being a police trade in, is affecting your trigger feel. (Of course, you probably know that). Excellent guns all around. Sig makes great stuff. I'm really interested to see how the lawsuit from New Jersey regarding the 229 goes.
The police force in my province (Canada) uses the sig p226. My father was a police officer for 28 years and never had to use it

I am a huge fan of the P226 and Beretta M9, they are #1 and #2 on my Handgun list, I give the slight edge to the Beretta because it is an open slide, its got better aesthetics (IMO), and I am Italian so I always give the slight nod to Beretta. Either one is a Go to War handgun, I have 4 P226's a W German, an intermidiate German Frame USA slide non railed, USA R model, and I just got a MK25. I only have 1 Beretta M9, but I am adding the all Black M9A3 G to my collection soon
I love my Sig. I like lots of firearms... but I love my Sig.
Have a LEO trade in 40SW and even with my reloads, is incredibly accurate; worth every penny. If it’s good enough for any PD, by God it’s good enough for me
The new Sig P22x models have billet stainless slides now to handle the .40 and .357 Sig rounds.
