  • Folk legend Peggy Seeger and her son Calum MacColl will be coming to Braemar on October 1 2021 to play in St Margaret's at the Braemar Folk Festival. Details soon. But as part of our current series of "virtual"concerts due to Covid, Peggy has recorded some tunes especially for us.

Thanks, Peggy for the beautiful singing and guitar arrangement. I first heard this song from Ed Trickett about 40 years ago, but more recently found Don Lange's original recordings... It got personal when (through a dive into Ancestry Dotcom) I found the census reports for 1930 and 1940, showing *both* of my grandmothers in the same situation as "granny" in the song, each with four children, and with their husbands "elsewhere." No romantic hobo stories in our family, in fact, no stories at all -- just pain and anger... The line "back in the thirties, when the going got rough, old granddad he hit the road" fits. Such a pretty song with a temptingly romantic chorus to sing along, which I remember doing in the '80s without "getting the message" in the lyrics. Duh.
