I d say the author of this show does enjoy living in the morally gray to morally dark area....like Vanitas/Noe are both far from "heroes" and with their trauma, it d make sense that their perspection of consent and morals would be warped. Mochizuki (the author) loves to write form the point of already mentally scarred individuals, which allows certain disturbing scenes have a "normal" air, which in my opinion is part of what gives her work that "mad hatter/alice in wonderland" vibe. So if you feel disturbed/confused by certain scenes, it is partially the purpose.
100% agree it’s kinda spoilery but in the manga, later on when Jean-Jacques apologizes for forcing his memories into Noé, Noé simply smiles and says it doesn’t effect him. While everyone else wants him to be a little upset. Noé is a character that isn’t given a choice a lot of the time and isn’t free in several ways. So he doesn’t fully grasp some situations because he isn’t so aware of his sense of self.
so many scenes from pandora heart are in here. i love juns art work a big fan girl. the blanket scene with vanitas and joane is a paraleele when alice and oz didi something familiar while antidote bird reminds me of xeres break giving antitdiote to echo in pandora hearts. a lot of call backs and references I love to see from her old works. still wished that pandora hearts got the love it needed to get a remake! i still have all the manga PH and CSV

She can draw a most beautiful panel while also make it give out the most twisted vibes..and none of her characters are fully "normal", tho in case of PH the reasons are given to us quite later within the story, so in the Mochizuki fashion while we already KNOW a lot about Vanitas and Noe, I d not be surprised if we find out even much more of their warped pasts, that will make everything even more realistic, but muuch later.
Vanitas, all at once, being so very clearly hungry for validation and intimacy while at the same time being uncomfortable with the idea of vulnerability and intimacy is such a good angle to take for his character 🥺 It’s real cool that you picked up on his pivot with Jeanne, I always love hearing your thoughts on characters and shows that present these sorts of topics! 😊
Noe's morals around blood drinking are (i think) intentionally all over the place and concerning. He's heavily restricted in his own actions because he can experience ppls emotions and memories by drinking blood, but he doesn't hold that same standard for other people. It just kind of... happens to him. Like constantly. And I think thats part of the reason Noé is so high and mighty about not retaliating against Astolfo's assailants or immediately trying to throw Chloé off- "just let it happen, they mean no offense" kind of thing. There's theories surrounding Noé's experience before being sold to his Teacher that deal with SA and how that might have affected him but ig we have to wait for the author to explore those memories

Astolfo (in my opinion) may have the most tragic backstory in the entire show. And one of the moments that was changed, is during the charlatan parade when Astolfo is surrounded instead of calling him "big brother" the apparitions comment on how Astolfo is covered by 13 vampire marks but only 5 remain. Personally I think it makes his reaction to him covering his body fit better. (He is also seen scratching/touching his arm many times, which I believe one of the remaining marks is). I also think it makes his reaction to killing the dragoons more understandable. Because it's never made explicit that he was being assaulted by the men. All that is said is that they refused to listen to Astolfo and he "warned them over and over not to touch me, but they ignored me." Which could be interpreted that the soldiers were just manhandling him in a way. This could also lead to Noé not quite understanding the situation, but I also think Noé isn't the type of person to accept brutally killing the soldiers as a solution, at least not the way Astolfo goes about it (me personally though... I get it). Also Astolfo is like 15-16 so...
I’m so glad Danny was on Astolfo’s side during the introduction 🥺 it was less obvious in the anime than in the manga what happened, so a lot of anime-onlys didnt get it
just like Vanitas' performative persona is a type of armor, the same could be said about his clothes and The Book of Vanitas. Vanitas being separated from the book after he was cut off mid monologue, and then being stripped of his clothes explains his behavior and vulnerability towards Jeanne, hence "I'm already at my limit in so many ways."

What I love is the Beast of Gevaudan is a real actual thing that did exist. It is in southern France in the late 1700s. Look it up it is a interesting tale. But it was a real thing, not as large but it was something.
I finished this season last week, and let me tell you that it is much better than the first season!!This arc of the beast and the snowy forest gets cooler as the episodes go on, and the last episodes of the season are on fire!! I'm so excited to see Danny's reactions!!

I adored watching Vanitas running around searching for Noe after he wandered off, it's also based on a side story in the manga where Noe disappears but we don't see them looking for Noe in the manga. The way Vanitas calls Noe's name and he pops up is just so cute

I do not agree that VnC is “pro-SA” given how a character like Astolfo is written, especially what has been explored so far in the manga. But I do think it could’ve been handled better, it’s more so wanting to give a lot of these characters a morally grey area. Yeah Vanitas is the protagonist and while his backstory gives context to him wanting control over situations, it doesn’t justify how he treated Jeanne in the beginning. And I think Noé is simply too innocent to understand what Astolfo was implying the soldiers were doing.
Yeah, and if I’m remembering correctly in the manga he says they thought he was a woman and he warned them not to touch him. Noe seems to completely miss the implication there

Like a lot of people have already said the writer of Vanitas isn’t pro sexual assault in my eyes. If you read the manga a lot of the scenes come across more disturbing. You have less of the ha ha silly goofy things surrounding the scenes that are obviously mimicking sexual assault. You’ll find that the writer of this series really likes to take the whole “hurt people hurt people” approach to characters. There is no character who is fully in the right every character is a shade of gray and you’ll see that a lot more throughout the series. Vanitas and Jeanne are not meant to be seen as a good couple. They are bad for each other they have issues that are unresolved, the premise of their relationship is based around whims and the need for both of them to have something they feel they can only find in each other. I think if you are looking at things on a base level it’s easy to believe that it’s pro SA, however when you look at the series in its entirety, especially the manga, it’s supposed to be more disturbing, more unsettling, it’s supposed to make you question the morals of the characters and their views on consent. It’s supposed to make you wonder if these people are actually the good guys. It’s a really good way of showing not only how consent and things like that get muddled when you grow up in a society that doesn’t value it, but also had trauma affects people’s perceptions of consent. I highly recommend reading this part in the manga though because a LOT is cut from this arc that is setting up future things to happen.
So far as the romance stuff goes, I looked up the Wikipedia article at one point and this is a direct quote from there about the author- "There were multiple things she thought about doing after Pandora Hearts, like increasing the number of romance and battle elements. The head editor told her to cut down on them since she was not skilled at them. She started to draw more, believing they would be more appealing the more she practiced." So make of that what you will.

Yeah Vanitas is the protagonist and while his backstory gives context to him wanting control over situations, it doesn’t justify how he treated Jeanne in the beginning.
And I think Noé is simply too innocent to understand what Astolfo was implying the soldiers were doing.
Yeah, and if I’m remembering correctly in the manga he says they thought he was a woman and he warned them not to touch him. Noe seems to completely miss the implication there

Like a lot of people have already said the writer of Vanitas isn’t pro sexual assault in my eyes. If you read the manga a lot of the scenes come across more disturbing. You have less of the ha ha silly goofy things surrounding the scenes that are obviously mimicking sexual assault. You’ll find that the writer of this series really likes to take the whole “hurt people hurt people” approach to characters. There is no character who is fully in the right every character is a shade of gray and you’ll see that a lot more throughout the series. Vanitas and Jeanne are not meant to be seen as a good couple. They are bad for each other they have issues that are unresolved, the premise of their relationship is based around whims and the need for both of them to have something they feel they can only find in each other. I think if you are looking at things on a base level it’s easy to believe that it’s pro SA, however when you look at the series in its entirety, especially the manga, it’s supposed to be more disturbing, more unsettling, it’s supposed to make you question the morals of the characters and their views on consent. It’s supposed to make you wonder if these people are actually the good guys. It’s a really good way of showing not only how consent and things like that get muddled when you grow up in a society that doesn’t value it, but also had trauma affects people’s perceptions of consent. I highly recommend reading this part in the manga though because a LOT is cut from this arc that is setting up future things to happen.
So far as the romance stuff goes, I looked up the Wikipedia article at one point and this is a direct quote from there about the author- "There were multiple things she thought about doing after Pandora Hearts, like increasing the number of romance and battle elements. The head editor told her to cut down on them since she was not skilled at them. She started to draw more, believing they would be more appealing the more she practiced." So make of that what you will.
