It works as an explanation for why we can have him in our party, although having him fight Fatui before he actually leaves or anything is kind of strange.
I think Childe wanted to show traveler that he isn't working as a Fatui cause he's interested in that rather he joined Fatui cause of no choice but to help family, I guess . That's why in the end he also mentioned about quitting Fatui and joining adventures with the traveler. Childe wants to protect his brother's childhood memories so badly maybe because he might himself must have lost his childhood memories.
