- In this next route learning video, we take train 2D28, the 08:16am service from Orpington to London Victoria on the new Chatham Main Line add on. Along the way, we call at all stations except Penge East and Sydenham Hill. Stops include Petts Wood, Bickley, Bromley South, Shortlands, Beckenham Junction, Kent House, West Dulwich, Herne Hill, Brixton, and London Victoria.
The scenario I created for this video is available on Steam Workshop. The player and all AI trains are as per the real timetable, with a couple of minor tweaks to make things slightly more interesting. You can find the scenario on Steam Workshop here:

Very good, as an ex Southern driver this brings back some memories and your narrative is first class, enjoyed this, thanks.
me too
ex rm and Dover
Excellent video.
I'm training as a driver currently, and drive "orpy-vics" on a regular basis!
DRA use (per the rule book) is:
- at a signal at danger
- if previous signal passed was single yellow, and no platform starting signal
- if previous signal passed was a shunt signal
- if previous signal passed was a signal at danger passed with permission
The tunnel between Penge east and Sydenham hill is Penge tunnel. The loops at Kent house tend not to be used unless a fast is going to pass you.
One quirk of the route is that the up slow Tonbridge loop from Pets Wood to Bickley junction brings you out onto the "up slow Chatham". It's a historical quirk of the Chatham mainline that on the 4 track section between Shortlands junction and Swanley the "fast" services run on the slow and the "slow" services run on the fast!
Your speeds are pretty accurate, our driving policy is max 20mph at the magnet for a red. 30mph into platforms works pretty well.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your comment. It's always good to hear from real train drivers! I'm always interested to learn more about driving trains and the techniques used.
Thanks for the information on the DRA. I was slightly unclear on the rules but now I know the correct situations in which it should be used.
As for the loops at Kent House, I found the routing slightly odd so I guess the realtimetrains website may have been inaccurate, but it told me the train was scheduled into that platform.
I will try and bear in mind 20mph for an AWS magnet in front of a signal at danger. How was my braking and acceleration compared to how it would be done in real life?
Thanks again for your comment, I appreciate it :)
Bromley Boy I start training course for orpington station in march 2017. Can't wait. Been reading up and watching as many videos as possible to prepare. I have this simulator too. Is the simulator accurate enough to learn about the actual real route?
A couple of other points:
- PTI/dispatch is a big part of the job (and risk area) which of course cannot be simulated
- nearside monitors/offside platform shown at Bickley are inaccurate - the only place we still have "wrong side" monitors is the up and down loops at Herne hill. Most have been removed due to the risk of wrong side door releases
- the other thing that of course cannot be simulated are the delights of drunks holding the doors open, chavs skateboarding alongside the edge of the train, people trying to train-surf etc.
No worries at all.
Speeds/acceleration are generally pretty accurate. You tend to have to drive quite aggressively, accelerating and then immediately braking in order to keep to the timings. As a general rule my instructor likes 40mph max at double yellows, 30mph max for single yellows, although this varies depending on length of the signal sections (which is where route knowledge comes in). The ideal is to stop in brake step 1 to ensure a smooth stop.
A quirk of the BREL networkers is that the rheostatic brakes "drop out" at around 5mph which has the effect of seeming to push the train forward. You get used to it but it makes stopping on the monitors that much more tricky. The metcam units are friction brake only so it's less of an issue. BREL and METCAM units coupled together can be interesting and sometimes seem to fight each other!
Nice run as always Pete. Nailing the stopping points everytime ;-) The tunnel between Penge East and Sydenham Hill is Penge Tunnel.
+William Mankelow Thanks Will. Braking is the hardest part of driving a train, and I enjoy showing off my skills ;) I did put the name of the tunnel in one of those RUclips captions in the end. Not sure if it came up or not? I only remembered about it after the video had already rendered lol XD
A very nice video, Peter, with very clear graphics. A bit more interesting the East Coast Main Line with its flat scenery.
+Roger Crick Thanks Roger. I agree, I prefer the scenery here to the ECML and found this journey far more enjoyable to drive.
What a lovely smooth riding train that is. Another great video - well done.
+chris501 Agreed, and it's a nice train to drive. Thank you, glad you liked the video :)
Thank you SO much for making your own proper scenario for this new line and for using the original 465 with superior sounds and not the AWFUL default one that comes with the route! This was my home line growing up, my home station being Sydenham Hill, so I know it very well from the days when 4EPBs were the main stock.
+simonmd2000 Thanks Simon. I really hate driving default scenarios on busy routes like there. The number and variety of AI trains is really lacking and I find it boring. Realistic traffic with a wide variety of train types is so much more enjoyable to drive through! These sounds for the Class 465 are definitely better, and I plan to use this for all 465 journeys unless a sound pack comes out for the newer version. I'm quite interested in making a scenario on this route set back in BR days. Can you tell me which routes the EPB would have operated on at all? Thanks :)
The 4EPBs were used on pretty much everything that you see the 465 'Networkers' do today. Certainly, the 4EPB (class 415) were used on this route (Victoria to Orpington). I don't remember the 2 EPBs on anything south of the river than on the 'inner loop', Victoria to London Bridge, pretty much all the rest were 4 car units. The other common surburban units from the 1980's were the 455s and most are still in service on their original routes.
Thanks for the info, Simon. I'll see what I can do about creating an older scenario on this route at some point :)
I look forward to it, make sure you stop at Sydenham Hill next time ;)
The best thing I ever had seen.
There is definitely no bus station to the left of Bickley station xD. But apart from that the local area seems to be modelled fairly well. The station was pretty accurate apart from the monitors being off the station, they're actually on the platform.
The guard's signal was quite interesting as of course this route is driver only. And the sound itself was actually the passenger door release!
I know it's driver only in reality, but the AP soundpack only allows for driver and guard operation, hence the guard's signal appearing.
+PTGRail fair enough :)
I love this your commentary is fantastic
+TheKizzywhizzy Thank you, I really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed the video and commentary :)
Already a Video on this route? Gee that was fast.
Props to you ;)
+Siemens 407 Haha, thanks! I had the time and wanted to get this one out quickly so others could check this route out for themselves. Joined with the London to Faversham route, I think this is going to become one of my new favourites :)
Great video. What's the 2-1-1 bell sound before pulling out of a station?
I love the details they put in mostly the Southern Beckenham Junction - London Bridge Hopefully it wont just stop is Crystal Palace and go towards on a add on or something like that.
I hope the bit between Beckenham Junction and Crystal Palace gets modelled in the game :)
same as market,I have just passed my training for hst from Ramsgate to London st pancrass
22:15 Anyone for the "Too much to concentrate on: a Southeastern train" video?
Yes! I love this videos I didn't even realize that orpington was in the game keep these videos up. :)
+Raging Ru It's a short extension on the Chatham Main Line add on. I'm glad they included it as it helps increase the scenario potential on the route :)
Great Video, notice the graffiti on the wall at Shortlands, looks like PTG but I think its actually a D. Hopefully they'll do the bit from Beckenham to Crystal Palace.
+Paul Stoneman Haha, it does look a bit like that. I agree with you, I'd like to be able to run Southern services towards Beckenham Junction.
Nice vid Pete. I do prefer it when you do more station stops.
+Rick S. Thanks Rick. I think these videos are more interesting with more stops too, and enjoy driving these journeys more. :)
Excellent video, how long does it take you to learn a route?
+DarranKent Thanks. I've usually driven a route 2 or 3 times through before I'm confident enough to drive it. I do make notes the first time I drive through with the HUD turned on. Then I practice with the HUD turned off and try to follow my notes. Once I'm happy with that, I then drive the journey, only occasionally referring to the notes to remind me of the name of an upcoming station or something.
Even now, I can go back to most of the journeys I've made a video on and remember most of the speed limits and braking points. I think if someone could drive a journey say 3-5 times through, they should be able to have learned most of the route by then.
Pete, does the route have the Chislehurst Section up to New Cross ?
Nice video !!
+John Walsh No
+John Walsh Unfortunately not John, I wish it did so you could run from Orpington to London Bridge if it was joined with the South London Network. However, Danny has joined this route to London to Faversham, so you can now drive from Victoria to Orpington, Sheerness or Faversham via Beckenham Junction or the Catford Loop Line via Denmark Hill.
Anyone else notice the lack of aws on the signal guarding the approach to Bromley South?
+PikalaxALT I noticed it when practising the driving for this journey. Forgot to mention it in the commentary. Looks like someone missed that before releasing the route.
You missed out penge east and Sydenham hill your supposed to stop at these stations
And by the way this is my other RUclips channel my main one is Ruben Warren
Er sorry for being a bit dum, but what are adverse signals?
The route around Herne Hill and Brixton is strange because there's so many different ways to get routed through and it's complicated, I don't understand it!
It's quite a complicated network! I hope that my new route guide to the Brighton Main Line helps explain some of it :)
Took this in real life brings memories
Good video. I didn't realise they were doing the route to Orpington, Maidstone next? Jokes.
+Paul Webley Haha, this is just a short branch of the Chatham Main Line. I'm just happy that it adds a bit more variety for scenario creation! I hope they do make more routes in Kent :p
Yeah so do I, then I'd have to buy it lol the last train sim I had was the Microsoft Train Simulator with the London to Brighton/Portsmouth add on which was years ago
Quick question regarding scenario creation; do you add all AI trains during the timeframe of the scenario or do you just add ones near the player train? Any advice on where you get the information from? (I've been using Realtime trains). Thanks and great video.
+MilPop14 - The Orig O'bus MANAGER When adding AI trains to a scenario, I take a look at the trains passing through key stations on the journey. For example, in this video I first looked at all trains passing through the Orpington area around the time I was leaving and then added them. After this, I checked the times for trains leaving Bromley South before I get there, and added them in. I just keep moving up the line like that, ensuring I cover every important station when adding trains.
You also have to make sure that you place AI trains far enough away that they have started moving before you get to them. After they have passed you, I just then route the AI trains into the nearest portal to get them off the map and so improve performance. I get all timetable information from the Realtime Trains website :)
+PTGRail Thanks for replying with a detailed answer :) I started putting every AI train in my scenario at every station for the whole duration of the scenario which I quickly gave up on as there was simply too many to add.
Some routes don't need lots of AI, others do. You could create a scenario on say the Settle to Carlisle line which needs no more than 5 or so pieces of AI. But if you do Brighton to London at rush hour (I was creating this yesterday), you could have 70+ AI trains to add!
Crikey, that's alot. I've just finished creating my scenario but am currently trying to resolve a issue with a signal not clearing (requesting to SPAD doesn't work either).
MilPop14 - The Orig O'bus MANAGER Check to see if another train will conflict with your path at all, even if it might not actually do so for a while. If it will, change the priority of that train down to something like stopping passenger, then your train will be given priority at the signal.
Great video.
+TrumpProductions Thanks :)
one of my cousins use to live in a house along the side of Herne hill station!
May I ask what sort of hardware you're using to run TS 2016 ? I know it's very resource hungry, and even those with up-to-date machines moan about a poor frame rate, but by the look of this video your specs seem more than adequate.
No problem. I'm currently running with an Intel Core i7 4790k 4ghz processor with 16gb DDR3 1833 RAM and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 4gb graphics card. I still suffer with lag occasionally, but it's more due to the age of the game engine. It's not optimised for modern hardware.
Thanks. My machine is okay for the earlier stuff, and on a route like London to Brighton, but trying to run the South London route on it is like climbing Everest in carpet slippers.
Hi what steps do i need to play this on a laptop?
Thanks!
great video, how do you zoom out that far on the game? I can't find a way
Thanks! I made a video tutorial explaining how to do this: ruclips.net/video/PwWd1gVhT9U/видео.html
How do you zoom out so far in the cab?
I don't get it why there is a lot of 465s.
Does this mean that there are three 465s in the game: The one with the Chatham mainline, the Sheernes in sea one and the free standing one?
+GraphiteProjekt No because the Sheerness branch one is a class 466.
+GraphiteProjekt Indeed, as Simon said the Sheerness Branch train is the Class 466. Though I won't drive it because of its highly unrealistic performance!
The one in Chatham Main Line is a 465/0 and 465/1 (which are pretty much the same). The Standalone one is a 465/2 and as mentioned the one in Sheerness on Sea is a 466 (2 car).
Something to note though - the 465/0 was made by BREL, the 465/1 and 365 were made by ABB (ABB Bought out BREL so all those are similar). So that would mean all of those would match closer together than the 465/2
While the 465/2 and 466 were built by Metro Cammell, so while they are similar they differ in many minor differences.
did you use a soundpack in this video?
I did indeed. I use a soundpack in all of my videos where available.
Hi PTG, may I suggest doing some streams on twitch etc. it's just a suggestion but I think it's a good idea. Also, what are the plans for the upcoming videos?
Nice video by the way ;D
+Harry Nim Hi Harry. Thanks for the suggestion. It's something I've considered doing before and made plans for. Recently though I just haven't had the time to really get myself set up and streaming on Twitch. I may consider it again in the future when I have more time.
And thank you :)
really enjoyed👍💯
+Trainspotter 909 Thanks :)
I hope they bring out a route from Ashford int to brighton
+Ruben Warren So do I as it's my local line! :)
How do you request permission to pass the signal in Train Simulator
Press TAB. :)
26:30 Your printer is off playing your games while you're distracted.
I swear that Lewisham is in the real life route
There is no key on and you didn't do a break test : )
cool
can you use train sim 17 to do this journey?
Of course, TS17 is the same game at TS16 :)
PTGRail Thank you very much! 😀
How do you get so good FPS
I upgraded this PC last September and built it specifically so I could get a good FPS whilst recording in Train Simulator.
well that was enjoyable, wasn't it?
+Josh Fowler Haha, well I hope you enjoyed it :)
I did, haha. Nice to see the full route to Orpington and not just to Kent House this time
I live in Brixton
i love southeastern
Orpington
The train sounds like an old f1 car
+Declan Thomas Haha, agreed! :p
Heeeeeelllllloooooooo
Y
hat it
Hate it when U say Coast Coast I say at work free Wheel it's much better 😡
