Made the trek from Michigan to Islip in 1974. Saw this one on TV. Got a chuckle, with the "Dick" Simmons. Around here he was always referred to "L'il Richard" Simmons. Bob Studt in the 54, went on a tear after this era, winning thirteen or fourteen championships among three tracks in Southeast Mich.-Northwest Ohio. At Flat Rock, Mich. he won every championship in the 80's except '87. He did miss a couple, or three races due to a work injury. I figured what the points would have been if he won all the races we missed, and our finish in those races one position back. We finished in the top three in those races winning one. We still would have won the championship. But not by very much.
Bob Studt missed figure 8 races.. due to a work injury???? What the hell did he do for a living? Slay dragons? My son's figure 8 history went the other way.
Good old days, Dick Simmons got second in this one, he won the 1968 world championship. Loved to watch Lubie Allen, he never stopped at the intersection. Very exciting!
Just the way I remember it. I feel like I'm 12 years-old again! THANK YOU for posting. James King, former webmaster at "Pops Racing Site" and a friend of Les Slone Jr. :^)
Now that was all kinds of awesome! Saw a lot of races at Freeport Speedway as a kid and then in Riverhead later in the 90's when my brother raced, but somehow a trip to Islip Speedway eluded me, regretfully!
Hi, just saw this now, I didn't record this. 99% of the videos on this account were recorded by me but this isn't one of them. I have no idea who this originally came from. At some point someone made the copy and had the timer on the screen.
My family raced stock cars and demolition at Islip back in those days. Thanks for this. I was there on this day.

Good old Uncle Charlie Mapes #58. Charlie got my aunt Betty pregnant back in 1971. He's still smoking those cigars.. LOL
Look at that. A whole sports show without politics, social programing, white or male guilt, climate change bullshit, etc. We should go back to that.
