I remember when I slip speedway was surrounded by pine trees before they cleared them out when I was young my grand parents owned the house on Bates street number # 36 at the time only house on the block and now there is only 3 houses anyway my grandparents house 36 Bates street front door was in alignment with the main entrance of islip speedway I could throw a rock from one front door to another God please bring back the Islip speedway for it is etched in my soul
I watched Dan Daughtry race Late Models at Sunshine Speedway through the 70's, he won many features, he was a really good driver and tough as nails.. He made an appearance at Daytona in the late 70's too. Some of the best memories I have are my dad taken my brother and I to Sunshine Speedway every Saturday Night to watch the races, couldn't wait to get there. Oh the Good Old Days!!
That's great. I loved to go to Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway on Friday nights. There were so many top drivers who ran there every week.....Crowe, Balough, Conners, Anderson,Tissot, Brack....the list is long the 70's were great for Stockcar racing. Glad we both got to see the short track greats of the day.
A good friend of mine just dropped by Dickie Andersons house last week. He's still going, a bit slower in his later years but still doing pretty good.@@gregorygolden1296
Thanks for the reply. A lot of good info. I haven’t been to riverhead in at least 20 years, I moved away. but I heard about the street stock class it should make for some great racing
Scary but I remember watching this in 1971! I remember impatiently waiting for Wide World Of Sports to come on each week. At the time I lived in Duluth MN. Today I live not far from the Speedrome Sonny Thompson's home track and I have been there many times and twice for the World 3 Hour Figure 8. Got to photograph it for the track too. Stood where Sonny Thompsons plaque is many nights. At one time I was also crew chief for a race team and got three drivers their first wins. I sure do miss the older cars though, they were beasts and the drivers were just as tough.
In memory of Rick Swanson, “figureeightracer” who posted these videos on this channel. You will be missed and will never be forgotten. Thanks for the memories! 😢
Good old days, Dick Simmons got second in this one, he won the 1968 world championship. Loved to watch Lubie Allen, he never stopped at the intersection. Very exciting!
Now that was all kinds of awesome! Saw a lot of races at Freeport Speedway as a kid and then in Riverhead later in the 90's when my brother raced, but somehow a trip to Islip Speedway eluded me, regretfully!
Yes, it was an open competition show that basically allowed anything with a roll cage and belts. This was in the Fall of 1998. We had just won our track points championship so we traveled up there for this. The feature was 100 laps, we finished 4th.
That's a good question, I hadn't noticed that. Doesn't look like everyone crossed the line before the light came on. I think they have to for the lap to count.
Made the trek from Michigan to Islip in 1974. Saw this one on TV. Got a chuckle, with the "Dick" Simmons. Around here he was always referred to "L'il Richard" Simmons. Bob Studt in the 54, went on a tear after this era, winning thirteen or fourteen championships among three tracks in Southeast Mich.-Northwest Ohio. At Flat Rock, Mich. he won every championship in the 80's except '87. He did miss a couple, or three races due to a work injury. I figured what the points would have been if he won all the races we missed, and our finish in those races one position back. We finished in the top three in those races winning one. We still would have won the championship. But not by very much.
Bob Studt missed figure 8 races.. due to a work injury???? What the hell did he do for a living? Slay dragons? My son's figure 8 history went the other way.
Hi, just saw this now, I didn't record this. 99% of the videos on this account were recorded by me but this isn't one of them. I have no idea who this originally came from. At some point someone made the copy and had the timer on the screen.

Wow when the pits were packed with so many race cars
Look at that. A whole sports show without politics, social programing, white or male guilt, climate change bullshit, etc. We should go back to that.
They aired this on ABC's Wide World of Sports!

Nice win, it looks like everyone is starting to stand up to tom rogers jr and his dirty racing.
He hurt himself in this one.
Boy do I miss home Great job Rick Thanks for Sharing
You're welcome. Sorry just seeing this now.
Tom rogers is a sc7mbag
How is rogers on the front row after that 2nd caution if no lap was completed
That's a good question, I hadn't noticed that. Doesn't look like everyone crossed the line before the light came on. I think they have to for the lap to count.
