Hi Tysheen. I'm impressed that you picked this song. I know of no other reactor who's done it; they just do the same ones over and over, mostly "Piano Man" and "Uptown Girl" and the like. I wouldn't read into Billy's stage antics too much. He's being a showman. I don't know how much you get into jazz or simply unusual harmonic progressions, but he was just showing off how he could jump through all these chords (which are typically not used by most pop artists who just stay within 18th-century tonality) without even looking at his hands. And the running to the other keyboard was more show. Plays multiple instruments and doesn't need to watch what he's doing. And on top of that, this song is rather epic and complicated. Joel is my favorite songwriter because he transcends most writers' capabilities, in terms of his eclectic compositions. He does revert to simple rock, with "Uptown Girl" or "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," which are more straight-up tonal compositions with the emphasis on the beat and the subject matter. But I'm impressed you picked this epic piece to listen to because no one I'm aware of has tackled it. Just a reminder, Joel is a virtuoso and just likes to look around, as if to say, "Oh...am I playing? I forgot to look at my hands, but they seem to be flying all over the keyboard." Thanks, I haven't heard this in a long time, so it was a nice refresh. This is an even more-epic song, replete with a multiple-part prelude before any lyrics start. First of all, Zanzibar (Zan'-zi-bar) is the name of club he plays at, according to the lyrics. Secondly, Billy was always a very energetic and dramatic performer! He wore his suits with sneakers....and only partly for the fashion. He would always have different keyboards (pianos, synths, organs) set up all over the stage and he'd RUN from one to the next throughout his shows.
What was going on is that Zanzibar on the album features world class trumpet player Freddy Hubbard. He wasn't there to play the solo, so Billy decided to have some fun and put a Hammond organ on the other side of the stage so he could run to it and shred a solo of his own. Billy and his band did a lot of physical things like this.
The original recording during the solo was played by legendary trumpet player Freddie Hubbard. For showmanship aspects, I'm sure Billy just went to the Hammond Organ and did the solo to have fun. If you want to see a better version, you can watch a live version later in his life where he does use a trumpet player. I'm glad you reacted to this great song.
