This is a 100% Chinese rail way, built, owned, and ran by Chinese & China ---- as part of the Belt & Road/Silk Road project ---- to serve the interests of China and the Chinese; but it (& the highways China's also building in northern Laos)....just happened to run through poor Laos because it's from these poor neighbors, far and near, that much of the RAW resources and materials China needs to have (from crops to minerals to metals to precious metals to raw labor, etc) would come from.
At this point, these "Belt and Road" projects are still operating on very red financing margins: too expensive for the average Chinese to use on a daily basis (forget about the average Lao users), in high enough volume to pay for even capital expenditures, much less making profits. Profits from these high speed rails will come ONLY if they are able to operate carrying TENS OF MILLIONS per year, like those line between Beijing and a few close by major hubs, each city with TENS of millions of people, with at least 5-8% being upper middle class for whom a ticket of $30 - $80, per short ride isn't a problem.
Laos per capita income is between $3,000 - $5,000. You can't ride a bullet train on a daily basis, paying $30 or more per ride.... in such a per capita income.
But the initial capital expenditure was so high, you can't lower the per ticket to a city bus ticket price, either, since that would NEVER make the ultra expensive bullet train business profitable.
I will rain on your parade, so you have to excuse me... but the probability of it being scaled back drastically or shut down within a few years, from high operating costs (without an realistic ability to be profitable) is MUCH higher than the probability of it becoming a routine, usable, daily commute vehicle for the average Laotians and other non-Chinese outside or China's more wealthy cities...
We shall see, whether these "terrible, untrue saying" are proven true or false, within 2-4 years... These things run on real RESOURCES, not magic or declaration from the ruling Communist leaders of China or Laos. Even Communist leader WILL shut things down, if the "out-put" (services, profitability, etc) is less than the "in-put" (cost of maintenance, initial investment recuperation, etc)

Construction of a line going from Bangkok to Vientiene is underway. As another commenter mentioned, that might be completed by 2028.
The planning of a line connecting Singapore with Malaysia went cold, but fresh proposals are being made.
A line going from Bangkok to the southern end of Thailand is anticipated, but wouldn’t be operable until 2037 at the earliest. That line, assuming Malaysia’s government is still open to it, would extend to Kuala Lampur.

How can they consider themselves decent human beings if they get angry by the sight of China doing great things for others and say to themselves "We must stop those Chinamen from improving the lives of those people or else our days of dominating them would be over and it is us who are falling behind!" The US government has got to let go of that mentality that says "In order for us to be ahead we have got to keep others down!"

      疫情期中国与老挝只开行货运列车客运只开到彼此边境上,疫情过后肯定可以直达甚至从香港出发完全可以直达东南亚。

Impressive. Once they sort out the reservations for seating and maybe get the boarding a little more slik it will be great. A great new facility for Loas.

The LP train station is cool design, very nice. Few years ago, I took the slow boat in Mekong river from Huaisay to Luang Prabang, was a memorable trip.

As a fellow Australian, I look on with envy - we're still waiting for our first high speed rail...

You should need to apply for a Chinese visa to see the other side of the Laos-China railway, especially reaching the city of Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan province.
