My Dad, William Ghan, is an EAA Homebuilders Hall of Fame member. He used to have his High School metals classes build an airplane every year. He also taught 2 to 3 week work shops for teachers to learn how build aircraft in their classes as well. He passed away in February at the age of 85. Watching this video brings back so many good memories from my youth.
I'm an EAA member of 27 and 166. I'm a part owner in 27's RV-12 build (N935WT), and will be joining the club once 166's gets built. The RV-12 is an amazing aircraft to fly, and has quickly become my favorite plane. Once flying, you will love it! Good luck guys.
Wife and I were driving to Forest Grove, OR, passing an area set aside for aerobatic practice, watching a couple of RV's mixing it up with high G maneuvers. Some time after, walking in town, we heard sirens. Turns out one of the RV's had crashed. Investigation revealed that the holes in the spar and fuselage attach points that were to be reamed to fit the bolts precisely had been reamed oversize and the joint had been working, eventually causing the spar to fail. Losing a wing is pretty much fatal. I watch your videos and you have a lot of fun flying (and crashing) some outrageous RC projects. Point being this is a full size, man carrying aircraft and there are no unimportant details. No joking around if that needed to be said. They are beautiful, nice flying aircraft and by all accounts the kits are precisely made. Enjoy yours!
I am working on my PPL on my own right now. I already own a 1961 Forney F1A Ercoupe and will be flying it soon, I pray! Thanks for keeping young people interested in Aviation!
RV-12's are awesome aircraft. I helped build one for a school project in NZ. Talking from experience I think the worst part is de-burring all the Aluminum, We also had to put green Primer on all the Parts before assembling as corrosion is a big problem where I live. Its Defiantly a fun project a lot of hours but damn its worth it when it flies for the first time
First we had FlightChops with the RV-14, now we have you guys with the RV-12. As an aspiring AMT, this puts a smile on my face. :) Can’t wait to see this all come together!
The one big thing I took away from working on military aircraft (helicopters) was always, always keep your eyes out for FOD. Myself, I'm so glad to see this channel take another huge leap forward. I have to believe you will all pay very close attention, treat this build with the serious attention it demands and have a huge bucket of fun along the way. All the best!
I'm about 25 hours into my private training in a 141 program. Before I started I was expecting to go part 61 so I did my ground school with Pilot Institute. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone. Their program is very comprehensive and they focus on understanding the content rather than just helping you memorize information to pass the written exam. This will make you a safer pilot in the long run.
The light box kit is an awesome idea. Lets you make your first mistakes on something other than the airplane. You start on the airplane already knowing the basics. Can't wait to see you add radio control to the RV 12.
And I thought the hovercraft was totally over the top. This collaboration totally rocks!!! What a quantum leap for Josh’s vision for FliteTest!! This is gonna be epic! Can’t wait for the progress videos 👍👍🤩🤩
I’m so jealous! I’ve been looking at Vans aircraft for years but haven’t been able to pull the trigger. This will be a great series for you guys, I’m sure you will love it.
Wow! The guys that got me over the hump of flying RC are now trying to do the same thing with full scale!? I’m an EAA member and a huge fan of the RV series. While I’m not a licensed pilot, I’ve gotten my share of hours in, most of them in RV’s. I can’t wait to see where this journey goes!
oh gosh i watched your channel years ago when i was into rc aircraft and recently i decided i wanted to get a pilots licence after i moved to switzerland, and i also thought how cool would it be to build your own airplane? and now you guys making videos? nice XD
Hey brother. Check out last weeks challenge where we took on horizon hobby to re-create the Redbull Stunt. :) Thanks for the feedback please know we listen
God, you guys are the coolest people I don't know, but do all the cool stuff I want to learn how to build. Retired navy with idol hands. When are you coming to San Antonio? Oh, and sorry, I am a hugger, so if and when I meet you guys, it's just me showing appreciation.
I moved from plastic models to cars; you guys moved to actual pilotable airplanes! Most impressive! This is going to be an absolute blast to watch the progress from parts to plane over the next couple of years! Cheers! BTW - that is a handsome little bird! You plan to paint it or keep it polished aluminum? I'd prefer polished, like a WW2 P-51; with a black cowling and FliteTest insignia as military aircraft rondelles. Just a suggestion!
The prototype Supermarine Spitfire used flush rivets in its construction. In WW2 there was a need to speed up production and a change to done-headed rivets was proposed, but it was recognised that this would increase drag. The approach used during testing was to glue split peas on all external flush rivets and progressively remove them until acceptable flight characteristics were achieved.
This is great to continue on this flite test journey you are looking upward and onward to another interesting build. While learning new skills all the way through the journey. This is exciting please don't leave any thing out. We will bee watching and waiting on every episode. Thank you for all the thought and work you all do there at flite test! ps. genius!
Will it be possible to repeat such an aircraft where it is impossible to buy a whale and special rivets (we only have construction ones). Can you put a car or motorcycle motor in there? With us, you can easily process wood on CNC and cut metal with a laser. but special materials and engines for aircraft are available only to the military.
IMO Greg's suggesting setting the pneumatic rivet puller to around 80 psi is too high and will cause the rivet gun to recoil. 45-50 psi works well for LP4-3 rivets, experiment for yourself.
I soloed at 16 and have tons of hours of flight time. I’m still a student pilot. Should of finished when I was young. But marriage and family took priority. So thankful to finish the journey now. :) JB
How much does it cost to actually build one of these vs buy a Cessna skyline ? Can't believe you can build your own plane and even be allowed to fly it legally
As a CFI and former LSA test pilot, I am so proud of you guys and the growth of your goal. I can not think of a better crew to do this build. ruclips.net/video/Ort34tJ0wDA/видео.html
After looking at van's website, I have concluded that this build is way out of my price range. $70,000 for just the plane. That does not include the cost of flight school. Best wishes.
I like your wars but do have a video with a titan if not please make a video with a war but between 1 side and the other side there’s a titan named tiesinozilla which means gigantic lizard here’s a story about it 1 that I made myself something terrible happened which turned a lion into a 150 foot tall 380 foot long monster and 500 foot tall when upright standing monster with sharp Spinosaurus like spines and a less baryonex like head with fangs that will attack the city you have to can stop that monster before 3 more monsters move on to the city to destroy the 1st monster will be a giant mutanted crocodile the 2nd monster will be a mutanted caterpillar who evolves into mutanted butterfly the 3rd will be a mutanted comodo dragon with 3 long necks and 3 heads
Very interesting, but please have the ladies tie their hair back safely, and please everyone wear eye protection when using power tools and riveting. Better safe than a trip to the hospital.
Hey, I recognize that airplane! Thank you for the shoutout from the Yuba-Sutter LSA Teen build team. Build video ruclips.net/video/UNqY-OvINS8/видео.html

Sorry for your loss.
What a legacy he left behind.
You were to have him...
Keep his memory in in your heart and pass it on.

I sometimes watch this video to remember my childhood building airplanes with my grandfather.
Great fun , I built the fist 12IS in Australia. It my was 3rd RV build …. A great kit

Imma have to come down there and give them a taste of what they’re in for! (Although the 12 isn’t aerobatic, it’s a fun machine!)
@@FlightChops soon as i saw this vid i thought of you it could make some good video for both of you
@@crog9750 That’d be epic. I’ve secretly always wanted a crossover between the two of them :P
I am a part of the the young eagles 252 chapter at eaa witman airport and we are building the same thing, it is so fun

I built one with my school, absolutely a fantastic home build kit. Good luck guys!
We have an rv-8 and 2 rv-12is, great planes congrats!!!
I’ve had the experience of flying in an RV-12 and you really won’t regret building this amazing aircraft!
Well a ways into a dr107 one design build myself, every step of it has been so rewarding, excited to watch you guys have the same experience!
This is by far the most elaborate April Fool’s video I have ever seen! Well done guys!
This is an April fools video??
@@morkshanmedia3998no this was an April fool's comment
I don't think so...I been into homebuilt experimental aircraft for decades..
It's a a real doable thing.
IT COULD HAPPEN!!@
🐦
Wow from RC planes to building real ones congratulations and keep the good work love from Mumbai India.
You're building a Vans!!! I've followed them for decades. They make awesome planes! Way back to RV4. Awesome!
The light box kit is an awesome idea. Lets you make your first mistakes on something other than the airplane. You start on the airplane already knowing the basics. Can't wait to see you add radio control to the RV 12.
Thanks ❤❤❤❤
Those cleco are a great item they hold everything in place while you install rivets

It will be cool to see you all build this plane out, how you outfit it with gear, and fly in it. I love the videos with your Stearman in it.
This is bloody amazing!
Love the videos!
Cool ! Another video !
I want one!! So what servo's do you plan to use???
Were there more videos on the RV12 build?
It was only a matter of time! Gotta love it!
i have that same rivet gun at work. except mine is yellow. GREAT pneumatic rivet gun.
This is the way. Glad to see this on the channel, will be following this longer form project, you wind up having far nicer toys.
Great adventure guys!

Considering they day this came out, I was expecting to see a vid about them making a full size plane out of their foam board :)
Peter Sripol did just that on his channel
What do yall recommend for getting part 107 online
Oh man I love flying the RV12 great plane!
I mentor high school kids in Wichita to build one of these as part of the Airbus Foundation Flying Challenge !!!
I hope everyone stays safe.
Excelente proyecto.
Muy bueno
Espero las actualizaciones del avance

This is interesting . Looking forwar to follow you building that plane .❤😮😊

The IKEA version of an airplane... Love it!! Only question is what ESC should I use. 🤪
This is so cool so looking forward to seeing the build. But Josh you said you guys weren't going to build full size airplanes lol 😂.

If you guys weren't a 3 hour drive one way away I would have loved to help build this. My day job is an airplane structures tech.
You are more than welcome to come camping on a long weekend and hang out maybe give some advice
I was going to say, I'm sure they aren't done yet.
Like Spock said. Fascinating.!
Josh: “…over the next year or year and a half, we’ll be building this plane…”
With “The Dave”, I’ll predict a week or two. 😂
1000% true. ;)

Oh, and everyone should build an ultralight ECONOPLANE like the one on my channel! 😱😁👍👍🇺🇲
I love them but can they make a C-47 skytrain
Holy crap. 134 for a flannel shirt. Wow
Holy crap! What an awesome project! Did Peter Stripol put you up to this? :)
You guys are building a Van's? Freaking hyped for this!!
Neat!!
Don't you have to have an FAA person there to supervise and inspect as you building each item?
No, it's only required to be inspected at the end of the build to receive a FAA airworthiness certificate.
Oh I always heard that they had to have a FAA representative there to observe every step but I guess I was wrong
So what happened with this project?? Did it just fall by the wayside?

or is it just a promotional project of a local seller of ready-made kits?
