From Lobster boats and windjammers to downeast style yachts and classic wooden vessels, Stomping Grounds 7 has the Boat Trader crew visiting the coast of Maine to explore the rich heritage behind one of the meccas of wooden boat building in the United States. Highlighted is a very special boat constructed at the Brooklin Boat Yard named LEGEND, a stunning 38-foot wooden boat that is a well-researched and accurate reproduction of Ernest Hemingway's fishing boat, PILAR built by Wheeler Yachts, the same family-run company that built his original yacht. Next is a stop to the nearby WoodenBoat Magazine that keeps tradition alive by teaching a new generation of students how to build wooden boats.
Next the crew stops in Camden to learn about Windjammer sailboats, hopping aboard Capt. Dennis Gallant's Windjammer ANGELIQUE, a steel hull "Brixham trawler" that takes adventurous guests around Maine's many natural archipelagos. From there, host Ryan McVinney visits Bar Harbor to chat with lobster boat captain Dallas Hodgkins, a third generation lobsterman who runs the Lulu lobster boat. He explains what makes a good lobster boat and lobstering in general, a quintessential Maine pastime. Viewers learn some of the ins and outs of this "dirty job" that can be both dangerous and rewarding. Finally we learn about modern "downeast style" yachts, often referred to as lobster yachts, and the venerated Hinckley Yachts company who is a beloved Maine boat builder.

The Wooden Boat School is an exceptional one-of-a-kind place - learned a lot there, so many cool wood boats, models, tools, designs and diagrams.

Ryan, a friend of your mother forwarded me this video, great to see your generation so interested in boating. This one especially hit home since I live in Camden and have been involved in boating fot50 years. In fact, my boat, Black Swan, a 1985 Midnight Lace, is in your video. It can be seen twice leaving Camden under power by Curtis Island in the drone shots. This summer will be my 38th year with Black Swan. Incidentally in your windjammer discussion with captain Gallant the other windjammer with tanbark sails was the Roseway which I owned in the late 1980's, that was what brought me to Camden. Hello and regards to your parents. Chuck and I both taught high school in North Reading in 1968-69. good memories.

Hey Stephen - that's so cool that your boat Black Swan is in the video! Cool boat! And thanks for watching the episode. That's awesome that you owned the other windjammer. My parents never mentioned that you were a boater too, they say hi too! Small world, great to see your comment here!

We just returned from Down East Maine. This episode really captures the beauty of Maine and why it is such a iconic New England stomping ground. Well done. I now want a Hinkley yacht... with a piano on board!

I spent many summers as a camper near Deer Isle along Eggemoggin Reach and had the good fortune and numerous opportunities to be able to sail and motor the beautiful waters between Camden and Bar Harbor. This video reminded me of those days and I enjoyed the perspective you took by visiting the villages where the boatbuilding magic comes to life - shout out to The Brooklin Boat Yard⛵️
