  • A rare instance of a band that all three Listographers hold in high esteem: Supergrass. Our opinions of the band might be the same but will our rankings of their albums? Stay tuned to find out.
    ****
Supergrass are an English rock band formed in 1993 in Oxford. The band consists of brothers Gaz (guitar and lead vocals) and Rob Coombes (keyboards), Mick Quinn (bass and backing vocals) and Danny Goffey (drums and backing vocals).
Originally a 3-piece, Gaz's brother Rob Coombes officially joined the band in 2002. The band signed to Parlophone Records in 1994 and produced I Should Coco, the best-selling debut album for the label since The Beatles' Please Please Me. Their first album's fourth single "Alright" was a huge international hit that established the band's reputation. Since then the band have released five albums: In It for the Money, Supergrass, Life on Other Planets, Road to Rouen and Diamond Hoo Ha (2008), as well as a decade-ending compilation called Supergrass Is 10 (2004).
In August 2009 the band signed to Cooking Vinyl and began work on their seventh studio album Release the Drones. The album remained unreleased and unfinished as, on 12 April 2010, the band announced that they were splitting up due to musical and creative differences. The group disbanded after four farewell gigs, the final one at La Cigale, Paris on 11 June 2010.
The band reformed in 2019, initially to perform at Pilton Party followed by a ‘secret’ gig at Oslo in Hackney, London.

As fun and energetic as their debut was nothing could prepare you for the jaw dropping brilliance of the follow-up "In It For The Money".How it didn't make them global superstars has always confounded me.Far and away the most underrated group of the 90's.

    • @marktrickett5081

Therein was their problem. In it for the Money is that good, it overshadowed the rest of their career. That, and the cheeky chappy image cemented by the Alright video.

    • @TheLeftie600
      @TheLeftie600 Год назад +2

Weirdly, "In It for the Money" is what held them back. Music promoters were wanting another "Alright" or "Caught by the Fuzz", instead they got a genuine album full of mature songs. After that, popular musical tastes changed and Supergrass was moved to a smaller stage.

"In It For The Money" was my introduction to Supergrass. It was on repeat in my CD player for about 9 months. Nothing else was played on that CD player until I got Placebo's "Without You I'm Nothing."

    The correct order is:
    6 Diamond Hoo Ha - 3.5*
    5 Road To Rouen - 4*
    4 Supergrass - 4.5*
    3 Life On Other Planets - 5*
    2 I Should Coco - 5*
1 In It For The Money - 5*
The jump in song writing and arrangement from I Should Coco to In It For The Money is like The Beatles going from Please Please Me straight to Rubber Soul / Revolver, with nothing in between. Massive difference IMO.
You should check out their B-sides btw if you haven't already. Wait For The Sun, Nothing More's Gonna Get In My Way, Odd, Electric Cowboy etc. All just as good as their album tracks.

@@marktrickett5081 That’s a very good point indeed. That song was so bouncy, with its iconic video, that the powers that be wanted to market them as the ‘New Monkees’ or something - at least that was my take at the time. I have nothing at all against The Monkees, but I think the band were smart enough and breve enough to ensure they wouldn’t be pigeonholed in any way. I feel that they very much wanted to do their own thing as they saw fit - to have their own identity - and to express their considerable musical prowess in their own inimitable manner. There’s so many influences and wry nods on ‘I Should Coco’ - and the best thing about ‘Alright’ is the knowing wink to ‘Albatross’ in the guitar solo.
I was a great age for Britpop, where I was absorbing absolutely everything that was being released, but I always felt that Supergrass weren’t given the respect they were due. I think that the darker sound they embraced on ‘In It for the Money’ - right down to Gaz’s more severe haircut - was a deliberate move to distance themselves from the image and sound they had forged on ‘I Should Coco’. I always loved and respected the band, and I’ve had the pleasure of watching them many times, in fact, my last gig prior to last year’s lockdown was Supergrass at the 02 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.

Saw Supergrass many times as we shared the same front-of-house guy, Laughty (also did Ash and The Verve)... but beginning of 96 I was an exchange student in LA, and whilst I was there I happened to phone my wife during them playing 'Going Out' on The Word.... even 9,000 miles away over the phone I could hear how they'd upped their game. Sure, many fantastic albums that year, but if I were asked to choose just the one, IIFTM would win over OK Computer; the chief reason being is it leaves me in a fab mood. Just want to take my trilby hat off to Gaz, who has always been the nicest guy (I still have a first press of 'Caught By The Fuzz' signed by the whole band to my daughter, who had just been born) unaffected by the shite he's been through... truly one of the finest British songwriters, up there with the likes of Davies and Weller.

It’s good to hear you guys in total agreement on your appreciation of an excellent band. Over here in the UK, Supergrass never got the same media attention as bands such as Blur and Oasis received, which proves the theory that you need more than just talent to be commercially successful.

@@179rich that’s an excellent question, Rich, and I wish I knew the answer. Perhaps they were thought of as being ‘cheeky chaps’ who made music for fun and therefore not cool like Blur nor a band of the people like Oasis. They certainly had plenty of success during the Britpop years but then seemed to be forgotten about when music moved on.

Diamond Hoo Ha is good but sounds a little too much like most indie around 2008. The other 4 albums are all incredibly strong in very divergent ways, maybe I Should Coco nudges ahead because the energy and the hit rate on it is at its highest.

So great to see so much love for Supergrass, and especially Life On Other Planets. The critical reception was so typical of how bands are treated in the UK press - they'd simply been around an album too long and unless they've been deified (like Radiohead had been by the release of OK Computer) bands will just get overlooked no matter what the quality. LOOP is sensational from the opening bars to the closing notes and as you say there isn't a weak album in the collection. Really good to see the recognition and love here.

In terms of the last few comments in the video, in the UK I think Supergrass suffered slightly from "Alright" being such an enormous hit that they were then stuck in many people's minds as some kind of Britpop Monkees, which didn't really fit their later output. Blur were consistently good over the same period (I'm not going to say anything about Oasis).

Nice to see you guys spotlight such a criminally undersung band. When the so-called Brit Pop scene was happening in the mid 90's , I hadn't embraced it fully for two reasons: 1. Although a former anglophile, by '95, I was mostly going down the American indie/ college rock rabbit hole at that time. 2. Most of the Brit Pop bands were derivative of their influences and didn't really put a unique stamp on their music, so what was the point? But with still a little Anglophile in me and I would occasionally read bits and pieces of British music mags at the news stand (typically without buying them lol), and I seem to remember the NME or Melody Maker or one of those talking about Supergrass as if they were The Monkees (The Monkees on weed lol) of the Brit Pop scene... Talk about a mischaracterization (assuming my memory is accurate)!
A year or two later, I made a friend at college who was listening to almost all the contemporary British bands, and he played me I Should Coco, and I was surprised and impressed by good it was. I heard the influences, but they weren't as obnoxiously blatant about pillaging the past (derivative) as say, Oasis were. I do think Supergrass carved out their own identity and over time, showed they had a lot more musical depth than many of their peers who they would transcend and outlast. I eventually picked up I Should Coco, In It For the Money, and I think I bought Life on Other Planets right when it was released. I also saw them live on that tour and they were amazing! Anyway, I haven't heard their whole discography, so I'm not going to do a ranking, but I do think they deserve more acclaim than they've gotten.
Not to change the subject, but another great band who sprang from that scene with "super" in their name that also deserves to be highlighted is Super Furry Animals. Any of you guys fans of them?

So glad you guys love them and you’re keeping their name alive with potential new fans who aren’t aware of how great they were . Great video guys! I enjoy Supergrass a lot more than the 'top tier' britpop bands. I don't have a problem with their influences showing either. Although I like Blur, Oasis and Pulp a lot I listen to the 'second tier' bands much more often, especially Supergrass and The Charlatans (UK). I quite like The Bluetones and The Manic Street Preachers in small doses, though there' s plenty of britpop that leaves me cold. I agree with Jason and Joe that Supergrass had some perfect five star records. I also think they are easily the best britpop band. The Chartlatans never had a classic quite like Supergrass, keeping them just outside five star territory but they did show pretty astonishing consistency over 13 studio records. Simpatico is perhaps the only low point. Anyway, when I listen to Supergrass I'm probably going to listen the The Charlatans around the same time. These two bands go hand in hand for me. I'd probably rate Road to Rouen a bit higher than you did but I find them a tough band to rank due to such high quality output. In it for the Money is definitly number one however. Great band!

I have 4 of their albums and for some reason never bought Road To Rouen and Diamond Hoo Ha, although I do know a few songs from these.
    1) I Should Coco - 11/10 (yes, ELEVEN). Played this album to death back in the day and despite being a debut from such a young band, they already show maturity and experimentation on the slower songs like Sofa (Of My Lethargy) and Time.
    2) In It For The Money - 9.5/10. Some awesome stuff but I always enjoyed their debut a lot more, despite the horns, etc. being an inspired addition. Contains one of the most memorable opening sequences on any album I own on the start of the title track. Talk about a rush of adrenaline (which obviously continues on Richard III)
    3) Supergrass - 8/10. I loved this one to begin with but for me it had the opposite effect to what a 'grower' would be and I went off it a bit. Haven't listened in a while so maybe I will return to it soon.
    4) Life On Other Planets - 8/10. I played this a lot also when I first got it, maybe having an adverse effect. A very 'fun' album but if I remember correctly a lot of the stuff seems to sort of blend into each other, for want of a better description. Good songs, just nowhere near as strong or memorable as anything off their first two. Seen The Light for example, good, just not great.
Edit: Having just bought another copy of Life On Other Planets and listened after a long time, I will have to score it less than 8/10. It is nowhere near the quality of any of their previous 3. My issues:
    I) The drums are pushed back in the mix and I always loved the upfront positioning on especially their first 2 albums.
II) Way too much borrowing of other people's music. Prophet 15 is basically Let Em In by Wings. Total plagiarism.
III) Nowhere near as memorable in terms of melodies compared to their first 3 and a huge step down in innovation compared with their previous X Ray one.
    Overall 6.5/10. Ok.

2 Road To Rouen 8/10 startling start to record with rest being good songs... Alot like Sgt Pepper / Beck in places ...Low C is like Lennon. Back on form.
1 In It For The Money 8.5/10🏆...lots of hits with my fave songs on here from them, and on the cover the guy on left looks alot like my brother🧐 weird ....g song only dip on album for me...

From day 1 I have thought that Supergrass was an exceptional band. Have never understood why they are not bigger. Gaz is a topnotch writer, singer, player. But the drummer, and especially bassist are perfect for that tight 3 piece too. And once they added Gaz's brother on keys it made all the sense. I watched a doc on the band once, about their house by a lake, and their whole atmosphere. I think that's when I realized a reason that may contribute to why they were never bigger: they're just too damn innocent. You need a little danger, or controversy, or pain from a band, I think. I'm not sure. Also they came from nowhere, and then hit with "Alright", so maybe they got categorized as a bubble gum act before people got to know them. IMO they are fantastic. I always think of them together with the Whigs, from Athens Ga.; a band that I think you guys would like a lot too. Between the first 4 albums I don't even know which one to pick for what slot. The first one is so young. I do think "Rouen" and "Hoo Ha" are different; a little darker, shorter. Maybe a bit dis-engaged. But sometimes I feel that that is why they are just as good as the others. An artist should move, and go up and down. Edit - they are also one of those bands that doesn't lose a bit on live stage. Very tight, and their vocals are dead on. I couldnt believe when I saw them pull off all those falsettos live.

Gaz has gone on to a similarly underappreciated solo career

So that was a very interesting list for me to make, because I didn’t know anything about this band. I liked it! They have two great albums. The rest is not bad, but the two albums at the top are much higher in quality. They have some troll songs in their albums; nonsensical, funny stuff. I like that a lot. Their attempts at long songs usually fail. They’re best when doing short, fun and uptempo songs.
Not so Good Albums (2 Stars):
    6. Supergrass
(Not a lot I like on this one. It is not bad, but not good also. Overall a bit boring. ‘What Went Wrong (In Your Head)’ is a good song though. This is the only album I would not recommend. Something is missing here.)
    Good Albums (3 Stars):
    5. Road to Rouen
(The first half is not very good, but the second makes up for it. ‘Coffee in the Pot’ is the highlight. I really love the funny songs by them.)
    4. Diamond Hoo Ha
(This one is a good album, but it feels like everything had been said on the album which will be my number one. Not much is new on this one. ‘The Return of…’ is great, as well as ‘Outside’.)
    3. In It for the Money
(Overall, this album is a step down from the debut. ‘Late in the Day’ and ‘Sun Hits the Sky’ are great. Couple of other good songs on here, but not everything is to my liking. The songs at the end drag. The exception is that troll song at the end, that one’s funny. The main riff from ‘Richard III’ sounds very much like the one from ‘Silver Rocket’ by Sonic Youth. Very creative 😉. Just kidding.)
    Really Good Albums (4 Stars):
    2. I Should Coco
(There is some really good stuff on this debut. ‘Alright’ is amazing and that is just one of the great songs on here. Had a lot of fun listening to this album. Entertaining. ‘We’re not supposed to’ is great.)
    1. Life on Other Planets
(Where did this come from? It’s great! The songs are really fun to listen to again, I missed that a bit on the two albums before. It is more consistent than the debut, every song is great. I really like it, it might even move up to five stars eventually. The songs on this album will appear a lot in my Top 10 songs list.)

The novelty of watching you all agreeing on an act was enjoyable but I did miss at least one of you being pissy about even having to listen to the artist of the week.
But if you were going to agree on an act you picked a good one with Supergrass.
Why are they so underrated? When you are a fun, energetic group capable of writing a catchy 45 in your sleep, well that is easy, you are not worth closer inspection. You see it a lot in the early 1970s when your serious prog and heavy rock fans sneered at T Rex or the Sweet or even early Bowie 45s. The distinction may be lost in the mists of time now but it was real at the time. Part of the reason Led Zeppelin didn't release 45s. They were a serious LP band, 45s were for kids or even worse teenage girls.
And once Supergrass has established themselves as loveable, likeable goofballs few critics or fans wanted them to progress. The comparison to Elvis Costello is a good one. He struggled for years to escape that indelible image of the four-eyed knock-kneed bitter loser.
The Undertones were another act that followed the Supergrass arc and moved too fast for the fans/critics to keep up.
Thanks for shining a light on Supergrass.
