I work at a little local cafe. While I was working yesterday, I saw a little girl walk in with her mom. The little girl was holding a pug puppy with a cute, pink collar. The mom said she was a Christmas gift, and after I gave them their donuts, the mom sat down at one of the picnic tables outside while the little girl gently put the puppy down in the grass and played with her for a bit before the mom said to come eat. It was one of the most wholesome, heartwarming things I’ve ever seen in my life. It gives me hope that what happens on the internet and what happens in real life might not be exactly the same all the time. Seeing that little girl enjoy a beautiful sunny afternoon with her mom, her puppy, and a donut made me so happy because it’s been so long since I’ve seen a kid just be a kid

I'm 40 and I've only been using actives in my skincare for about 5 years, and everyone still thinks I'm 27. It's just all about good sunscreen habits! I don't think there's anything wrong with tweens having some makeup to play with, I remember how fun it was to try out sparkles and lip gloss and blush, but all of this is going too far. Kids shouldn't be spending more than $5-10 on their products, and they certainly shouldn't be influencers, it's just consumerism at this point. Like do kids even have enough experience to have their own opinions about makeup and skincare or are they just cosplaying their favorite adult influencers?

Millennial Mom here. I have done my best to raise my daughter off the internet, away from influencers, and away from all this bullshit. And the outcome? She gets bullied. She gets bullied horribly because she doesn’t use Drunk Elephant, doesn’t have a Stanley, and doesn’t wear Lulu Lemon. It’s absolutely heartbreaking and crazy that that’s what kids are these days. Hyper consumers that judge based off of even more superficial crap than we were. She even got bullied for having an at age novel in her backpack. I’m seriously thinking about homeschooling her. but I don’t want her to lose out on socialization, and I know that the few other friends that she has that are in the same boat as her would be devastated. They don’t.
When I was a server 99% of the time parents would just stick an iPad in their kids’ faces to have them “behave” in public. I hated those tables. The worst one was a kid, I wish I was making this up, no older than 7 put his body on the table look at me and not only talked over his parents but interrupted me saying “hello” for a wifi password. It was the most demanding and shocking behavior I came across, apparently that’s a norm now. His parents just told him to sit down and got him the password ASAP before they even told me want they wanted, I didn’t even get an apology. My parents never hit me or yelled at me really, but that shit? Never would’ve happened, we would’ve left. Behavior like that isn’t and should never be rewarded.
Anymore, I just think parents don’t care and are too tired to. They had kids to fulfill a social obligation and ended it there. No obligation to raising a well-adjusted, respectful, and prepared human being. Nada.

The environment for kids these days is full of so many bad habits and temptations. I remember making blogs with my friend when I was 8-11, since that was the popular thing to do in the 2000s, I'd made so many about different interests of mine, learning basic HTML, including links to my favorite songs and flash games, writing diary entries etc. And in my spare time, I still played with toys and kids' video games. My parents were elderly and didn't play much with me either, so it's not like they did tons of involved parenting, but kids need restrictions from the social aspect of the internet.

Online spaces are more hostile and predatory towards children now, I can't even think off the top of my head any actual online spaces that cater to or are primarily visited by teens and tweens!
I remember blogs! They were so fun to make, but many younger ones don't know about them because we've been conditioned by corporates to use templates and apps, flushing creativity and personality down the drain.

i was robbed of my childhood and tween years due to bullying and harassment. and seeing kids wanting to use makeup, wanting to be social media influencers, wanting to do anything other than just simply being a kid, it hurts.
it hurts to see that kids care about their appearence more than what new toy they should add to their collection.
it hurts to see that kids care more about being an influencer than if they should wear their sparkly dress or their unicorn shirt for school tomorrow.
it hurts to see that kids are running around makeup stores, buying aging cream, all sorts of makeup, whatever.. than learning about themselves and who they are.
you can take away my childhood, but for the love of god, give these kids the love and attention they deserve instead of making a profit out of them.
they say kids are our future, but if this is what's happening to them, i don't want to be a part of it.

This is so sad, I cannot even fathom being this insecure and conscious about wrinkles, skin tone, etc. at such a young age. I remember buying some anti wrinkle moisturizer when I was 16/17 and my mom found it in my bathroom and took it away from me. She then bought me a simple moisturizer with sunscreen in it and said that's all I needed to keep my skin healthy. I cannot believe these parents are ok with and actively encouraging this skin product use. I'm glad my mom took the anti-aging crap away from me and made me realize how ridiculous it was.

As a newly 13 yr old, (or should I say late gen z/early gen alpha) I do have skincare and makeup. I also only use RUclips and Snapchat (only to text)
I wear only highlighter (sometimes), mascara, and concealer (I only wear it sometimes). And most of the time I don’t even wear makeup. As for skincare, all I have is a cleanser and moisturizer.
My take on this: they shouldn’t have skincare/makeup until they’re at least 8-9. Honestly, it depends on maturity and why you need it. Honestly, I think these kids have all of this bc of social media, older generations of siblings/ parents, and because of the other kids they’re around. These gen Z/ millennial parents don’t put their foots down when it come to their kids.
The main point: basically, these kids don’t need any of this shi. It’s ruining them! Social media, skincare, makeup… I’d understand if you’re like 10+ with acne prone skin… BUT AT 5 YEARS OLD? WHAT THE HELL😭 as a person with bumpy cheeks, acne prone/textured skin… I don’t even use half of this stuff and my skin is probably going to be better than theirs in the next 20 years.
Personally I miss when kids can be kids.
Edit: also her outfit and style is rlly nice I love it!

It’s one thing to take care of your skin, and keep it healthy.. but not everyone can use that much stuff. I have pretty bad whole body eczema that I never grew out of, I can only use like 2-3 things and that’s just eczema cleanser, toner, and eczema lotion. This is what happens when a child under the age of 13 is exposed to the internet and beauty standards. 😕 And the fact that the parents aren't doing anything about it and don't see the harm in it is just so... unreasonable :/ Edit: I'm not speaking for ALL 13 and below kids I'm just talking about some of the kids who do this. And this is completely not their fault. Half of the time, it's the parents fault. And the media's fault.

I find I’m strict in a sense as in yes I filter everything they do but I also believe after 16 they can start to expose them selves to social media’s and I’ll happily watch on and guide them as they ask but until then I watch it all and make sure I protect those impressionable young minds. I’m gen Z and I’ve played with dolls, plushies, slime, Pokémon and everything that my local newsstand sold with my friends until idk the end of middle school?? and looking at it that was already strange for the kids of that time.. I’m genuinely just, sad. I’ll be turning 18 really soon and it’s slowly getting to me how the times where I didn’t need to care about anything, ANYTHING at all, will soon be gone forever and children nowadays have been stripped of that so early that many won’t even be able to say they ever had a childhood. We were born with videogames and tv in one hand and the internet on the other, but if I’m being honest videogames and the kids tv shows at least taught some kind of morality; tiktok and socials in general are the worst teachers regarding morals/ideologies and I stand by that, they fuck with adults brains imagine a child’s.
And again, I also had unsupervised internet access and I too have many many problems and traumas from it, can’t even imagine how these kids will grow up..
Ps. I still play videogames, watch cartoon shows, collect plushies and watch kids movies 🙏 I’m reconnecting and healing my inner child and I’d never be embarrassed of it
