THE STORM OF A LIFETIME - Tornadoes & Lightning, Laurel NE

- Eight tornadoes, epic supercell and constant lightning from the Cedar County Nebraska storm on June 17th, 2014.
For licensing contact hankschyma@yahoo.com
At least 8 separate tornadoes touched down from this isolated supercell. The first was a cone that roped out, the second was a brief rope minutes later and the third was long-lived and began as a multi-vortex tornado. On several occasions a thick RFD engulfed and obscured the tornado, then the rain cleared enough to see a tornado was still there. These could have been separate tornadoes however the more likely scenario is that it was the same one. The constant lightning produced by this storm was odd in that it was made up of many, many small cloud-to-cloud discharges rather than the usual large discharges and anvil crawlers that more often accompany the supercells I witness. After dark, the consistency of the upper updraft and anvil was fuzzy or foggy giving the soft glow to the small frequent discharges.

Steven Tarsitano ive been in a night supercell
This day was hard. Pilger Nebraska lost everything, so many farmers lost everything. My friend lost her little girl this day. It makes me cry knowing what I saw, experienced that day. It's a very eerie feeling. I rummaged through fields to help pick up people's lives the next day. It will never be forgotten. We helped our neighbors who were mourning so much. Nebraska has rebuilt.
It's very tragic what happened in Pilger. You are very lucky to have survived that tornado. Stay strong and wonderful Christiana.
Pecos Hank how do you get tornadoes
I live in Lincoln lol

The lightning is almost impossible to believe even with this incredible footage. I can’t imagine being there. Simply Amazing.
You couldn't pay me to hunt the bastards at night. It's bad enough during the day, but the nighttime? HELL no. I tip my hat to you, sir!

@@alakranvenenoso8079 Especially with a thicker layer of clouds... This would make for an incredible event in a videogame :o
In Greece a tornado happened in Greece, the lightings were so terryfying!
During the day you can see tornados but at night that is the most terrifying when you can't see it
I dunno. For me it depends on what's going on. I wouldn't jump into one in progress at night but if I'm chasing one into the night then I kinda got a feel for it by then. But generally, yeah I agree, wouldn't want to do that.
Once we had a tornado. When my brother was 4, he looked so scared. I simply said "dont worry." {we were in the basemant by now.} then he looked at me and was like "is McDonalds gonna be okay?"

I like this video for two reasons. One is that the footage is excellent, and the second reason is the live action audio doesn't sound like the vehicle is full of overexcited, panicky children like in so many other videos. You all sound focused and calm, even if you are excited. I love that.

I usually don't care for added music over videos. This is different. Very artistic. A breath of air, that's what this video was compared to other storm chasing footage. Thank you.
+Etienne Dauphin Thanks Etienne. BTW, I write and compose the music.
+Pecos Hank well you composed sone very good music, fits the lightning time lapses perfectly, and reminded me of Boards of Canada, who I deeply admire. Mr.PecosHank, I am a storm spotter and watch a LOT of live stream storm chasing and equally a large amount of footage online (due to my logistics we at best get occasional EF0's in Nor Cal) . You have to be one the best chasing commentators (recorded and/or dubbed). When watching footage and that OMG lump in the throat bulks up.. you detonate "Chunkin Hogs" (and I LOL so loud my cat launches off my lap) and other lines like time lapse for viewers "in an ever increasing ADHD society" .... Thank you for your calm demeanor, witty banter and insertion of the "aftermath" stills in your vid's. We weather addict folk that can't get to Nebraska (or TOG ground-zero-anywhere) to see these vortexes rarely get to see what happens after the fact exactly where footage is shot unless it is a large scale showing of random devastation by news media. Puts it into a better perspective. Thank you for doing what you do.
RouxsTube...I too live here in NorCal (San Jose) and couldn't agree more with your comment. I do have to admit that, as much as I want to see an EF5 up close and personal, I'd much rather deal with our earthquakes ( The Hayward Fault runs about 20tt behind my back fence) that's for sure...
Chunkin' hogs was hilarious! Refreshing bit of humor in all that calamity.

Hey Hank. I like that you spend so much time in Nebraska, including my native land of NE Nebraska. I just wanted to say, I like your style much more than some of the other chasers with their own shows, especially one who get really out of control emotionally. Not a real confidence builder for his team. Also, I find your stuff a good deal more educational than the others. I'm living in Ord, Neb., now. If you get up this way, give me a shout. I'd put you up.

That's Classic!
I guess you can claim that pigs fly
Out of many spectacular ways to die I gotta say being yeeted 200ft into the air is probably pretty crazy until some debris knocks you out
This is why I respect him the most out of all the storm chasers on RUclips. You don't need to get completely close to observe and get good shots. Other chasers do stupid shit, put lives at risk just to get so close. Pecos has some amazing shots here. Plus he always thinks of how he can help others when they are in trouble in these storms.
I love how you try and help the community... I wish more chasers would do that.
During the 2011 outbreak, we watched a cell which had developed in Alabama, cross over into Georgia just north of us. It was just after sunset, and in the anvil was continuous cloud to cloud lightning with no thunder at all. Occasionally, a bolt would make its way to the ground and it would rattle a bit, but otherwise complete silence. It went on to produce a short lived EF2 with minimal property damage and no injuries. It had to be one of the eeriest things I've ever witnessed.
+Eric Brown Is that the one that crossed over a North/South highway? I always get reminded about that tornado when ever i go on that highway because it knocked down all the trees on both sides.
@@nesthell2 are you talking about the one that crossed 431 just south of Glencoe?
A tornado in the dark has to be the scariest thing mother nature can throw at you. I'd shit my pants even from a distance

Personally, if I lived out there, I'd be sleeping in a culvert at night. Those things are bad enough during the daylight, but at night .......forget it. Your videos are awesome. Too bad so many suffer in loss of property and life.
I'm glad I don't live in the tornado alley 🌪️
@Next Couple ...I’ve lived in Kansas my entire life, and have actually only seen 1 tornado in 35 years - and that was last summer. When it comes to these types of storms, you honestly get used to it. We get dozens upon dozens of supercell, severe storms every year. 5% of those storms will have a tornado warning. Out of that five percent, 25% will have an actual tornado. The odds of seeing one, let alone being hit by one at home, is very rare. (You has much better odds of getting crushed by a hurricane living in S. Florida. Plus tornadoes then, too!)
Just know what county you’re in, pay attention to the forecasts, and use your head when it comes to warnings. Have an emergency plan, as in where you’re going for shelter, and give yourself ample time. And don’t forget to wear shoes!!
Ain’t nothing but another day!
Just mother nature taking back what was rightfully hers ;)
I don’t need movies and T V shows, I just need Pecos Hank’s videos. Tornadoes, lightning and mesmerizing music brings me to every emotion.
I appreciate your split second pauses of the flashes, Hank!
Lightning bolts are fractal blueprints. Everything has this fractal design in it. Tree branches look like lightning bolts, roots, watersheds, river systems, even your own circulatory system has an array of lightning bolt shaped veins. The shrooms i took are the fruit body of lightning bolt fractal shaped mycellium
+low owl Good observation! Quite simply put, in the literal sense, as the "path of least resistance." Lightening will follow the quickest and easiest route along active electrons, as tree roots will follow the quickest and easiest route to water sources, etc. The fractal shape can also be seen on volcanoes from lava flows, for the same reason as the fractal shape in watersheds. It's all fascinating
Forgot how observant shrooms make you.
What kind of camera are you using to get these footages? I'd love to know, please - because you are such a great inspiration to a weather, storm and tornado enthusiast like me. I still don't understand why you don't have more views and subs than you actually have to be honest with you, but you will get there eventually with these incredibly clear and beautiful tornado videos. ***** I remember the one about four or five years ago that hit Minneapolis. I live one city south so we didn't get hit. Also, I worked -outside- during the wind storm that year! Almost 70 MPH winds! Shopping carts flying everywhere and people falling over. I helped an elderly woman into the store because I saw her all by herself. Matthew Brunette Same here! I've been watching The Weather Channel specials, and especially tornado specials, and I fell in love with weather and especially tornadoes. In the spring I would come home from school and watch outbreaks unfold, and when I turned nine, I decided that I wanted to go into meteorology :)
The "Hell Hath No Fury" Lightning toward the end was incredible!
Your video reminded me of when we had a constant lightening storm in Boston of all places, as the storm hit the ocean it stalled and dumped all its energy on our heads. The next day, folks were so traumatized by the sight that when I would talk about it, they just turned away. I'm from the midwest, but I think they weren't used to very many even regular thunder storms.
One reason I love living in Nebraska...i've had several opportunities to safely watch tornadoes and it NEVER gets old :)

You driving towards the tornado in the middle of the night with only intermittent glimpses of the tornado through flashes of lightning is one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen. If you can't see it, how would you know if it's gotten too close?
Great video. Living in California and now Las Vegas I have never had to endure any major natural disasters. I can’t imagine losing everything. I guess the people that live through these experiences value what truly matters instead of materialistic things. Throughout my life the things you remember and cherish the most is the hard times and the people that were with you when you pulled through it.
I've been bingeing tornado videos lately. Hank has the best footage by far. I'm so happy to live where we don't get tornados, but I feel for the people that do live in those regions. I'd love to experience these unbelievable storms from a distance some day. Supercell formations look like they are from a different galaxy
Tornadoes and Thunderbolt's. An awesome combination to make someone crap their pants.
What the hell do you think you’re doing hunting tornadoes at night? We need our favorite RUclips alive ;{
"I bet it's chuckin' hogs all over right now." They think they're being raptured.
Incredible footage. Very rare to see storms like this on video from the build up stage to the end. Excellent video. I enjoyed watching it all through .. Well done 👍⚡
So I’m a kid and I once thought that tornadoes were extremely rare and always damaging and deadly. Because of you and external research that I found elsewhere I now know that they’re pretty common in big storms and that the storm has to be a supercell and a very developed mesocyclone. I got big into tornadoes and weather when the Laramie Wyoming tornado on June 6th, 2018 touched down and brought 4 anti cyclonic tornadoes with it. It was declared an EF3 and the ground scarring that it left behind made it apparent to everyone that it was probably an EF4. It was also the most photogenic tornado of 2018 because there was no rain associated with the storm that birthed it
wow i just can't imagine how scary it would be to be in the path of a tornado you must have been braze i want to be just like you i don't know any channel that has great videos like you :D

Pecos Hank Yeah the lightning must have been striking more then every second to look like a strobe light. I showed this to many people and they were in awe. It is almost supernatural looking, the music you made or used for it was excellent. Then the next frame shows the damage it caused and a lump forms in ones throat for reasons of sorrow. I bet the thunder sounded like a War taken place. Excellent work my friend. Be safe and God bless.
Joshua Felty Constant discharges unlike anything I've ever seen. Appreciate it dude.
Pecos Hank I know that seeing that in real life as you have would have been mind melting. And you are very welcome, Hank. Keep up the great work and be safe my weather friend. :)
4:25 gives me some weird feelings
Strange question: How do you film tornadoes without making your pants brown
Ashlynn Compton diaper protection.
+Pecos Hank yup XD
+Ashlynn Compton They're storm chasers I think, So they're kinda use to it.
*AWESOME CONTENTS, NARRATION WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR AND EDITING. YOU'RE THE BEST STORM CHASER I EVER WATCHED*
The lighting illuminating the tornadoes was absolutely breathtaking, so freaking cool!
*As someone who has never experienced a tornado before, I just wanna say that they are terrifying.*
0:54 had to turn down volume at the office, a bit too risky
Could you imagine what Neanderthals were thinking when they saw storms like these?
Hank, I love the freeze frame style you use in this vid. It lets me see things I previously could not. I have only run across one double tornado after dark. I was aware in the lightning flashes that there were 2 funnels straddling I-70. I couldn't really see either one. Thanks for showing them to me now. Muchos grande huevos, pal
That shot at about 00:28 seconds in is freaking epic. Love the work you do, Hank. 🤘
