You’re not wrong. It’s an opinion on a superfluous outdated tool. I think it’s really cool, I don’t mind that it doesn’t say alpinist, but I hate limited edition watches with inflated prices because it’s limited availability alone

The best unique part of the Seiko 36.6mm limited version is the date position because it is reflecting the natural beauty of traditional culture. If the date is locating as others on the 3 position, it will be too stiff and boring!
Great Video FT! I hear what you’re saying and I had the same misgivings about this SJE085. But I purchased one because when I looked at this as its own watch, it couldn’t be beat. Especially when I held it in hand 😅
That said though, It really would have been perfect with no date and the “Alpinist” text on the dial!

This is the perfect size for someone with thin wrist like me. But I'll have to get the cheaper 38mm version. It'll be my second watch, coming from Seiko 5.

Honest review, man! But gotta disagree! I think it's another smash. Perfect resto-mod size (looks ideal on you, BTW) and a smart blend of modern update (430 date, lume, movement) with the (perfect?) classic design. I'm not bothered by the lack of 'Alpinist.' Anything but 'PS!' 'Alpinist' has come and gone anyway. I suspect some trademark/legal issues. In your macro, I think I see dial curvature..!? I'm getting it next week - nothing really like it in my collection or out there now. BTW, UK dealers still have the KS - the UK is good for Seiko supply.

I think those 12,3,6,9 markers are Seiko's way of saying "Alpinist" without actually saying it on the dial.

Yes since filming this long ago I have started to wear 36mm watches. The other day I was thinking I should revisit this and consider buying it.
I picked one of these up for £995. At the original price it was ridiculous, but at this price it is a ridiculously good bargain. It exudes classic charm. Those triangular indices are beautiful. Well chuffed. And the finishing is really good with not one flaw I can see on mine which is......rare for Seiko
Agree with you regarding the Alpinist on the dial. Such a missed opportunity! Maybe seiko's plan is to do another release with a higher price point 😂

Your comment on the missing "Alpinist" was spot on! Thank you for saying it! I cannot help myself, but I am furious about Seiko not making the proper Re-Creation that the original Alpinist deserves. I really don't get it. That half-assed date-window and that heavily overused "Automatic", it's driving me mad. I think the original Alpinist is one of the most beautiful, iconic watches that Seiko has ever created, it's a shame, that they did such a lazy job. Sorry for the rant, but I think you'll understand. Btw, that is a 3000 dollar watch. Let that sink in...
I'm not a fan of the date at the 4 o'clock position, but in this "case" I think it works really well to preserve the integrity of this classic design. I also would have liked the date at the 4 o'clock position on the affordable model.

Yes, it's not perfect, but still a lovely piece. Have ordered one. I like the size and the box glass will look great like the ksk which l also have. I wish the ksk is the same size as the original (36.5) but, still great. Btw today l am wearing the rare KS44 2000. 100% clean dial. So difficult to find one these days.

Ya, size is subjective. Anyways, the vintage 36.5mm KS44 9990 which l have looks bigger than the dimension bec of the bigger dial. The one that l am wearing today, the KS44 2000 though exactly the same size looks even bigger. It's strange but that's the way it is. Also, the alpinist on your wrist doesn't look small to me. Perhaps, that's bec l like this vintage size, lol
I agree. Just had it in my hands and while the format is lovely, it didn’t jump at me like the King Seiko which I just had to have the moment I saw it. I’d say it’s well built but lacks the x-factor

I agree about putting Alpinist on the dial. It should be there, especially at that price. The 36mm is too small for me, but this is for the hardcore/purist Alpinist people. I do like the thinness though.
Other than the missing screw down crown, the SARB remains the value king for a 10th of the price. Sapphire and 6R15 for $300. Even if not as water resistant, it won't fog up. And my SKX remains an affordable alternative for extreme conditions. I don't hate modern Seiko's but I'm happy I got my watches when I did.
Definitely has to have Alpinist on the dial. Nice watch but seems to have more in common with a presage watch

Definitely needs it. I can't imagine the king Seiko reissue coming out without the name King on there so I don't know if it's a copyright issue or what happened to the name alpinist... but it seems like it's gone forever.

As always great photography FT. I agreee completely how can you release a limited edition Alpinist without the name on the dial. I'm not a fan of the date either but it's a lot better than many in execution. Seeing a medium beat movement is also a plus when an increasing number of watch movements are slowing to 3Hz from 4 Hz to increase power reserve (also reduces wear I'd guess) It never used to bother me that much but I definitely prefer the 4Hz sweep of the second hand. I nice looking watch that does most things pretty well but I'm not convinced it'll be added to my watch 'watch list' just now. Keep up the great work FT, and I'll say nothing about the availability of affordable Swiss movement options :-)

I would like to see "Alpinist" on the dial and not have the date complication. I suspect the date complication is there because it's a feature of the movement and may have been weird to have the ability to pull the crown and manipulate a non-visible date.

Hey, Aiden. Do you know if this model has Zaratsu polishing? Seems to be some confusion regarding that with some saying it doesn’t have it. But it being an SJE family member with a 6L and high price tag suggests that it’s polished to GS standards like the other SJE models such as the KSK.
I'm not 100% but it looks like Ziratsu and I'd be surprised if it wasn't since the King Seiko Remake KSK had it.

Yes only 11 came to Canada. Seiko predicted it wont be popular in north America. I have to buy it from my trusted source Seiko Canada or Kavar Jewelers because I do get a special rate with them because of our relationship.
Ah I see. In case you are wondering I am seeing it online today from my AD here in town for 2888 Euros including Germany's 19% sales tax.
Ooh that's a hefty price. Right now I just bought another Seiko diver sold a bunch of my watches and bought one Swiss watch so I'm not in a rush for it I can probably get one in the near future.
completely agree on the text of alpinist on dial. The watch doesn't do anything for me. Wish it was no date though, but i do like the watch should be a standard production model, nothing highly special.
I like it but not sure it’s worth it. I think they should have released it as a normal production watch at half the price. I don’t mind paying top dollar for a seiko but let’s be honest. This is only 3k because it’s a limited edition. In terms of quality, it’s not necessarily better than any other 1.2-2k seiko
Yes! The 3 key reasons its more: the polish is superior hand zaratsu. But the dial and hands nothing was done different then the affordable versions. which sucked. The king seiko seemed to have better finish less dust under the glass. And the movement is superior in build and engineering for time keeping. no stamped parts like the 6R35 has. It will maintain its numbers far longer then the 6R will. And yes the limited size and numbers increase as well.

I think seiko doesn't have a 6L no date version just like there is no 6R no date. And they are lazy to modify it and make a new version. If they just took out the date mech it would still have a ghost position and they can't do that. So cheaper to just keep the date lol. just a guess.
@@EscapementWatch There is 6R no date recently used in Presage limited Castle in the sky. But it's 21600bph, so less high end than 6L and thus would not hit their target price?

I actually just bought a Swiss watch so now I have one Swiss watch in the collection and it does have a bracelet at the 3k mark

I agree with you but i disagree that the "cheaper" models doesnt deserve Alpinist text on dial expecially inner compass alpinists deserve Alpinist on the dial not just X logo...
It would be nice...but I forgave it because seiko calls the cheaper models re-imagined so a new version of a watch. but re-creation like on the limited I feel should have it. Would it be nice to have on both of course.
@@EscapementWatch Yes, and i dont understand why they put signed crowns on Presage models more often but on 62mas spb143/147 etc or Willard reissue doesnt have...and they are higher iconic models... I hope they fix this in near future.

'Laurel' is pronounced LAURel, not LauRel. It was the crown of laurel branches placed on the heads of winners in the original Olympic games.

true. but this movement is performing at cosc and is a natural chronometer. Just doesn't have the certificate. 6L movement is not 6R completely different.

Great review. Totally agreed with your opinions. Seiko simply sucks big time for this LE release. Reissue that is not true to the original.
6L isn’t really a high end movement
Seiko calls it a high end movement. Maybe its not high end as in finishing, precious materials, but its designed as a natural born chronometer and doesn't have stamped parts like low end seiko movements like 6R35. CREDOR seikos top sub brand uses the 6L75 same family of movement. So that should be a hint that it is no slouch.

6L is a fantastic precise movement that is also very small - so it is very high quality
