Well, the song "you're my best friend" was used in the trailer as well as in a certain very important scene. And it happens to be a song about married couple, so...
I always took “you go too fast for me Crowley” to mean many things. Crowley is always miles ahead of Aziraphale, whether it be keeping up with modern fashion and technology or seeing their head offices for what they are. Crowley quite clearly prioritizes Aziraphale over his “side”, but Aziraphale struggles to reciprocate. He still believes that Angels are the good guys and Demons are the bad guys. I think Aziraphale is trying to communicate that although he may want to be okay with their relationship he’s not there yet. Because of this I always took it to be a sad scene. Also, he just gave his friend what he thinks is a suicide pill. Or he could mean Crowley literally drives too fast for him. Which he does, but still...
Such a good “friend” sure bruh lol Also that u go too fast for me is not entirely just meant to be taken literally... yes Crowley drives too fast but that’s not the only way he goes “too fast” for Aziraphale lol
So Aziriaphael is that goody goody kid from school. He believes his side is right and that they’ll do what’s best, because of course that’s what heaven would do. But he’s seen how Gabriel and the others act, he knows how excited they are for the Apocalypse. He also trusts/cares for Crowley. That’s why he’s so split. The goody goody boy is being asked by his best friend to skip class/work/practice and he’s too nervous to do so.
He really really wants to do good, and puts so much trust in the rules. As long as you follow the rules, everything will be fine. (maybe also because the rule breakers before the beginning all fell into hell and the entirety of heaven is scared of that happening again) Except the rules that heaven is currently following call for the extinction of the planet and Crowley... Crowley is much less concerned with rules or breaking them, Aziraphale is rightly concerned with what might happen if they're found out and Crowley just sort of deflects the question with no one will find out. But doesn't actually answer what will happen when heaven and hell do find out that they've been 'fraternising'.
The 1941 and 1967 scenes are probably two of my favorites in the entire show and they're both back-to-back. But everything from line delivery, to the acting, atmosphere, and context of the entire cold opening (evolution of Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship) culminates to these two admittedly very important scenes. 1941 at the end we as the audience AND Aziraphale realize that Crowley DOES care and love Aziraphale. The past moments of saving him could be chocked up to merely keeping the Arrangement going. But Crowley didn't have to save the books but he did anyway because he knew how much Aziraphale cared about them. And the final shot with the romantic and swelling music where we close up on Aziraphale's face is that moment of realization for him. Then we get 1967 and see how that realization has very much affected Aziraphale's relationship with Crowley. Crowley saved his books so he decides to get him the Holy Water even despite their fight and his reluctance still to do it. It's a very intimate scene with them both in the car and Aziraphale trying his best to not even look at Crowley the entire time. The line "You go too fast for me, Crowley" isnt a refusal but rather an acknowledgement. They can't do anything because of the situation they're in. In his mind, because of his waning but still there allegiance to Heaven, they can't go past what they've managed to accomplish with the Arrangement. it's also a common thread through the cold open that Aziraphale worries what will happen to Crowley if Hell found out, which worries him more. These final two scenes and the later bandstand break up all have relevance to how we understand and interpret their relationship. They're friends but they also care and love each other but it's difficult to acknowledge even that in Aziraphale's case because of his failing hope Heaven is in the right despite all of the contrary evidence. And we really see when he finally KNOWS this in the next episode. Anyway this is probably the best episode in my opinion for the cold open alone but also for how Neil Gaiman wrote all of those scenes from scratch and made them fit so well and work with the rest of the story!!
Re: Aziraphale: He's distancing himself from Crowley because he still thinks Heaven can be persuaded that calling off the apocalypse is the right thing to do. Crowley determined a long time ago that that's highly unlikely. Anathema does have a more direct part to play in things, but it is true that part of her contribution is steering Adam's reality-warping powers away from flat-out destruction and toward 'make the world a better place.' re: 'what exactly is going according to Plan here': ...Hold that thought for the end. XD
I remember watching this with my very straight male roommate and when the "you go too fast for me, Crowley" scene happened he turned to me saying "ohhh so they're in love". Not so much with these guys, but nice try :)
the "you go too fast for me crowley" line gets me everytime and i cannot imagine just taking the line at face value and being like "haha yea,, he does drive fast",,, what is it like being straight?
I mean as an ace and being a super innocent person, I needed it to be explained to me but there was just ~something~ there and i felt it when I first watched the scene
They do talk about the legitimacy of the different prophecies in the book. Agnes' book is wholely correct but focused on her own family tree, she could see what happens to her own family to look after them but was a bit sketchy on general events that do not effect them. I think it's referred to as looking through a keyhole that you can't see the whole thing just specific things
I'm reading the book now and there is little (in fact practically none) of that marvelous pre-credit sequence in it. Gaiman invented for the series and I'm glad he did because its my favorite part,
He just mentioned on a Tumblr ask that he added it because, otherwise, there would have been little of Aziraphale and Crowley in the episode and that would, and I quote, "make him sad."
Love y’all but I don’t think u guys realize Aziriaphael and Crowley aren’t JUST friends lol. Like canonically according to the book author and the show writer they are together romantically 😇+😈=❤️
Really glad they're checking this masterpiece of a story ! Neil and sir Terry ftw ! Now, I'm crossing my fingers for The Expanse, His Dark Materials or The Last Kingdom ! :)
Crowley's car is 1920s Bentley and he had it since new :) Eww, horrible editing, missed all my favourite scenes! Oh, wait, everything in that "opening" was my favourite scene XD Please note that in the Bastille when Aziraphale swaps clothes with the executioner it also has an effect of them switching places - other revolutionists just mistake the executioner to be a prisoner and walk him out. Which means that Aziraphale was perfectly capable of saving himself the entire time he was just making excuses to invite Crowley for lunch. Yeah, it was explicitly said that Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter was the ONLY book of prophecies in entire human history that was 100% correct.
"God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time." Means no one knows human or angel knows the plan besides God and God not telling anyone.
I've never seen someone react to ''you go too fast for me, crowley'' thinking is because he drives fast.... im crying of laughter help, ''good friends'' with romantic music in the background I CANT
There is a bit in the book that addresses the others who made prophecies. There also is a bit where Aziraphale worked as a copy editor or something on the Bible. (I can't remember all the details)
“Bilton and Scaggs' third great publishing disaster was never entirely comprehensible to either of them. Everywhere you looked, books of prophecy were selling like crazy. The English edition of Nostradamus' Centuries had just gone into its third printing, and five Nostradamuses, all claiming to be the only genuine one, were on triumphant signing tours. And Mother Shipton's Collection of Prophecies was sprinting out of the shops. Each of the great London publishers-there were eight of themhad at least one Book of Prophecy on its list. Every single one of the books was wildly inaccurate, but their air of vague and generalized omnipotence made them immensely popular. They sold in the thousands, and in the tens of thousands. "It is a licence to printe monney!" said Master Bilton to Master Scaggs. [Who had already had a few thoughts in that direction, and spent the last years of his life in Newgate Prison when he eventually put them into practice.] "The public are crying out for such rubbishe! We must straightway printe a booke of prophecie by some hagge!" The manuscript arrived at their door the next morning; the author's sense of timing, as always, was exact.” Excerpt From Good Omens Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman This material may be protected by copyright.

It's from a song by the Irish Rovers called "The Last Unicorn". 🎶There's rats and cats and elephants, But Lord, so forlorn, I just can't see no Unicorn.🎶
It's mentioned in one of the episodes that there were many prophets in the past but Agnus's book was the only one that was a collection of entirely true prophecies which implies that others would occasionally make a correct prophecy just not as consistently as Agnus did!
I can't believe that these guys can't read the subtext between Azieraphale and Crowley. Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that Gon and Killua are best friends.
I think it is mentioned in Gods VO when it is describing Aziraphales books of prophecy that John's Revelation was an all time best seller. But Johns Revelation is looped in with the other, false books of prophecy.
Crowley escalated things quite a bit, that’s why Aziraphale pulled back. Crowley has given up on the earth, so he wants Aziraphale to desert both Heaven and earth to run away with him. And of course, they’ll never be able to come back, if they do that. Aziraphale hasn’t given up on the earth yet, and he certainly hasn’t given up on Heaven.
Nah nah nah nah I did not wait an entire week for this reaction for them to call Crowley and Aziraphale "friends". Is this really how straight people think?
I never picked up on them being gay =/ watched this and enjoyed it when it first came out and just thought they were friends. Only seeing the gay stuff in these comments now, sorry :P

Agenes Nutter has the only nice and accurate prophecy book ever. All the others are only partially correct. Every prophet got a bit right. Agnes' only flaw is a hyper focus on her family. Her prophecy for 22nd November 1963 warns her descendant not to stand by a particular building in Hull due to a falling roof tile.

On one hand I can totally see where the confusion comes from, since Crowley is clearly where the phrase “speed demon” originated, but….come on. Add in Crowley begging Azi to run off with him later and it’s not even subtext anymore. It’s just text. 😂
I'm not gonna lie, I've seen the first season 2 times now, and I didn't realize there was supposed to be romantic subtext between them until seeing this comments section. I think that comes from strongly believing that people can have deep friendships without that making them romantic. They're literally each other's only friend. If I was entirely socially alone except for having 1 single friend for thousands of years, I 100% would act like Crowley. I even read Aziraphale's line about going "too fast" with subtext, but I read it much more as "I can't be friends with you because you're a demon, you're overwhelming me by being so blatant with this, I can't". Based off of what everyone's saying, I guess I can concede that there's meant to be romantic subtext. But I'm going to stand by that nothing shown (at least in season 1) is of necessity romantic, and a platonic friendship could present itself this way. The thing is, though, is that people can rarely see really close male friendships as being platonic, because society tells men to repress their emotions, and that the only place they can have really deep and vulnerable relationships are in romantic contexts.
@@peterlewis2178 look, i can generally admit there is crisis in tv of male friendships being shipped a bit too much to the point it signals the toxic masculinity. but I am telling you it's not the case with this show at all. it makes way more sense once you look at this as two non-binary supernatural beings rather than men. with that the argument of "male friendships" renders useless to me. they don't identify as men, even if they present as such most of the time. there are blatant romantic cues in filming/directing/writing even in season 1. watch season 2 to find out more ig
A lot of people pointing out how it’s hinting to them being in love, but I mean I’ve watched the show fully and I only really get the vibe of love out of Aziraphale and a lot more platonic out of Crowley.
I was the opposite, on my first watch I was like 'dude, poor Crowley, pining away for his angel for 6000 years', and I had to go back and rewatch to pick out Aziraphale's matching feels, probably because of his ambivalence about betraying heaven. I knew Crowley had it bad for Aziraphale from the first episode, where Crowley was just outright ogling Aziraphale having a NSFW interaction with his dessert 😏

I think they love each other on a much deeper level than humans are capable of.
Agree ❤
Re: Aziraphale: He's distancing himself from Crowley because he still thinks Heaven can be persuaded that calling off the apocalypse is the right thing to do. Crowley determined a long time ago that that's highly unlikely.
Anathema does have a more direct part to play in things, but it is true that part of her contribution is steering Adam's reality-warping powers away from flat-out destruction and toward 'make the world a better place.'
re: 'what exactly is going according to Plan here': ...Hold that thought for the end. XD
I remember watching this with my very straight male roommate and when the "you go too fast for me, Crowley" scene happened he turned to me saying "ohhh so they're in love". Not so much with these guys, but nice try :)
"...rosemary beads?" LOL, this reaction episode is awesome. That, along with "such a good friend" and "he does drive fast." Good stuff guys.
the "you go too fast for me crowley" line gets me everytime and i cannot imagine just taking the line at face value and being like "haha yea,, he does drive fast",,, what is it like being straight?
Honestly even the straightest of people, even actual homophobes, have picked up on it, I have no idea what happened there x)
okay ngl as a die hard shipper of the two and a non straight, i thought it meant he drove too fast for him at first too 💀
Tbh I'm not straight and I took it at face value, how else is it interpreted?
I mean as an ace and being a super innocent person, I needed it to be explained to me but there was just ~something~ there and i felt it when I first watched the scene
Your sexuality doesn't have much to do with this. Some people just aren't good with romantic subtext.
“Rosemary beads” is worthy of Pratchett himself. 🤣
Oh no the break up :(
Married people fight all the time XD
They do talk about the legitimacy of the different prophecies in the book. Agnes' book is wholely correct but focused on her own family tree, she could see what happens to her own family to look after them but was a bit sketchy on general events that do not effect them. I think it's referred to as looking through a keyhole that you can't see the whole thing just specific things
@17:27 - Technically the dates for King Arthur don't matter anyway, it's origins are a welsh folktale in the time of the romans
"Is it really Holy Water?" There´s actually the funny fantheory that Aziraphale bathed in it, so it´s the holiest XD
I figured he had swiped it from a fountain in Heaven, but this is better. XD
Is there fanfiction of that yet?
I'm reading the book now and there is little (in fact practically none) of that marvelous pre-credit sequence in it. Gaiman invented for the series and I'm glad he did because its my favorite part,
He just mentioned on a Tumblr ask that he added it because, otherwise, there would have been little of Aziraphale and Crowley in the episode and that would, and I quote, "make him sad."
@@lindagomez7460 this is an old comment but that's so funny to me for some reason. So glad Gaiman decided to do that
@@misteruncanny ikr!! Its funny to me too
5:54 According to Michael Sheen, that's the scene where Aziraphale fell for Crowley (Pun intended)
I love how many comments on this video can be broken down to the bare essentials of "they are husbands"
Love y’all but I don’t think u guys realize Aziriaphael and Crowley aren’t JUST friends lol. Like canonically according to the book author and the show writer they are together romantically 😇+😈=❤️
technically they aren't 'together' together but they are in love with each other romantically
that one retro kid Yeah sorry that’s what I meant :)
I never read the books but I've heard they were more ambiguous in them.
When Crowley says "You can't kill kids", he's looking at the goats.
Neil Gaiman retweeted a tweet suggesting a Good Omens Watchalong of this episode for May 1st. Don't know how official it is, though.
It sounds legit given that prime's youtube channel has been releasing a lot of GO videos lately
I think you guys have different definition of "friends" then the rest of us. :D
Well, the plan is ineffable. Don't eff with it.
Really glad they're checking this masterpiece of a story ! Neil and sir Terry ftw !
Now, I'm crossing my fingers for The Expanse, His Dark Materials or The Last Kingdom ! :)
This was like watching that episode of Brooklyn 99 where Rosa tries to come out her her mum. "Such good friends" HA
Such a good episode.
Watching the innuendoes fly over their heads like fast balls is killing me XD
Crowley's car is 1920s Bentley and he had it since new :)
Eww, horrible editing, missed all my favourite scenes! Oh, wait, everything in that "opening" was my favourite scene XD
Please note that in the Bastille when Aziraphale swaps clothes with the executioner it also has an effect of them switching places - other revolutionists just mistake the executioner to be a prisoner and walk him out.
"such good friends" y'all putting blind into blind wave lol
10:30 Look! he compared it to Romeo and Juliet! he seems to be getting the subtexty text. We can give them a break lol.
"such a good friend" :::::)))) uhhh
I've never seen someone react to ''you go too fast for me, crowley'' thinking is because he drives fast.... im crying of laughter help, ''good friends'' with romantic music in the background I CANT
"You go too fast for me, Crowley."
"Yeah, he drives pretty fast."
Me: That's not what's going on here.
There is a bit in the book that addresses the others who made prophecies. There also is a bit where Aziraphale worked as a copy editor or something on the Bible. (I can't remember all the details)
“Bilton and Scaggs' third great publishing disaster was never entirely comprehensible to either of
them. Everywhere you looked, books of prophecy were selling like crazy. The English edition of
Nostradamus' Centuries had just gone into its third printing, and five Nostradamuses, all claiming to be
the only genuine one, were on triumphant signing tours. And Mother Shipton's Collection of Prophecies
was sprinting out of the shops.
Each of the great London publishers-there were eight of themhad at least one Book of Prophecy on
its list. Every single one of the books was wildly inaccurate, but their air of vague and generalized
omnipotence made them immensely popular. They sold in the thousands, and in the tens of thousands.
"It is a licence to printe monney!" said Master Bilton to Master Scaggs. [Who had already had a few
thoughts in that direction, and spent the last years of his life in Newgate Prison when he eventually put
them into practice.] "The public are crying out for such rubbishe! We must straightway printe a booke of
prophecie by some hagge!"
The manuscript arrived at their door the next morning; the author's sense of timing, as always, was exact.”

This version of the Bible also included an extra few verses in Genesis where the Lord asks Aziraphale where he put the flaming sword.
“And the Lord spake unto the Angel that guarded the eastern gate, saying Where is the flaming sword which was given unto thee?
26 And the Angel said, I had it here only a moment ago, I must have put it down some where, forget
my own head next.
27 And the Lord did not ask him again.”

2:56 bet David was like "well this seems familiar"... when he was the doctor the whole Shakespeare bit
I literally checked if this video had come out 20 minutes ago and then here it is xD great
Nah nah nah nah I did not wait an entire week for this reaction for them to call Crowley and Aziraphale "friends". Is this really how straight people think?
I never picked up on them being gay =/ watched this and enjoyed it when it first came out and just thought they were friends. Only seeing the gay stuff in these comments now, sorry :P
@@jacksonnew2592 I mean, the creator himself said it was meant to be a love story. What I've found is that it's mostly straight men who miss the romantic context, not to generalize.
The book describes Aziraphale as “gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide” within its very pages.
Granted, it then goes to disprove that, since Angels (And Demons) don't have genders.

It's interesting seeing your religious general knowledge I don't know whether it's like an American thing (I'm British) or just you guys specifically but you know heaps more than I do. Though i did grow up with an atheist dad and am an atheist myself but schools here are allowed to be religious and I've learned a few things that way but I've never been to a catholic school and friends of mine did and know more. Just an interesting thing.
Yeah, they know rosemary beads. . . real religious scholars
@@reneelasswell3734 LOL well i mean Rick was just getting his words mixed up a bit there 😂
Funny how their example of evil in the world is one of the safest and cleanest energy sources we have.

"I thought I was a good Catholic!" THAT WAS SO FUNNY
No one talks enough about Aziraphale thinking "foment" means "some kind of porridge." One of my favorite jokes in GO s1.
Aziraphale is trying to protect Crowley; if Aziraphale stops Armageddon Hell cant punish Crowley for stopping Armageddon
"rosemary beads" I might actually choke
It seems to be mostly cis-het men who never get that when Aziraphale says Crowley goes to fast for him, he’s not talking about the car lol
Well aziraphale lied to Gabriel as well as Crowley about the Antichrist. So i think he was both conflicted and worried for Crowley.

Show hasn't quite captured me yet, there's something about it.
The audiobook is free some places online and it’s pretty damn good. Better than the show but the show isn’t bad.
