You don't stick to one genre of playing when you are a guitarist. His playing was not bad before, it has just reached new horizons/creativity with this grateful dead playing. You can't compare this style to WTLI, it's a whole new ballgame. John said that himself, he had to study and listen relentlessly to play the dead. which is what I'm saying, its catapulted him into more creativity and more versatility.
he used to sound more funky..now its a classic rock infused with blues sound that its unique some how..i think he trully found his sound...no more thumb slaps on the guitar just smooth playing
James Allen John Mayer was awesome on guitar long before playing with The Dead. I have a live dvd with part of the show being The John Mayer Trio, its awesome. And also all the jams he did on Eric Claptons Crossroads Festivals. Next to Stevie Ray and a few others he is one of my favorite guitarist.
It’s all that practice, he’s working really hard off stage practicing his ass off on guitar and comes stage time the comfort level is off the charts, he deserves to show off haha trust me we never see the hard work being done
