Back in 1973, this is the version of Smoke on the Water that made this tune .... the tune, it was played over and over on the radio all around the world ... not the studio version
KISS ALIVE 1 AND 2, Jimi Hendrix at Monterey Pop Festival. Johnny Cash - 'At Folsom Prison', Allman Brothers - Fillmore East, Zeppelin - How the West Was Won
Holy Cow! I never get tired of this finest example of live Rock 'n Roll from the 70s. I bought this double album vinyl for like six dollars. Money I made on my paper-route. Just blew me away at 13. Now 63 and I can see why. Made in Japan. The pinnacle. All their live jams were just a little different. What an album.
I bought it, or more likely my parents bought it for me at around the same time as you (@1974 -75) but i was around 11 at the time. Still got it on vinyl although I'm not sure if it is the original one from back then, I may have replaced it in the eighties.
Such a magic performance. And without this live performance, "Smoke On The Water" just would have been another really good Deep Purple song... but this performance elevated the song into something really special....just my opinion.
+pajasa62 And it's really a LIVE album, not one that was re-recorded in the studio, or fixed up. Their engineer Martin Birch did the recording in Japan and then mixed it back in the States (I think) . One of my favorite actual live albums.
Yeah... this song and Space Truckin!! I wonder how many GALLONS of Jim BEAM I consumed with these songs in the 70's in Smyrna, GA ---> It's a miracle I'm still alive!!
Best riff ever. Live version conquered the world. Blackmore's intro ruled, then the cymbals come in, by the time the bass comes in its absolutely monstrous
I remember hearing Roger Glover's bass underneath Ritchie Blackmore's solo way back in junior high school. Cinched my decision to take up the bass at the suggestion of a friend. 40 years later, I'm still playin'! :)
Best EVER version of Smoke on the Water. The intro and the middle solo especially at 3'36 are brilliant. Blackmore's solo after the second verse has to ne listened to repeatedly to be believed. He is on Fire !!!! Both Roger Glover and Jon Lord around 2003 said that Blackmore played little or no over dubs for Made in Japan. Glover in a separate interview said he had chills re-listening to Made in Japan but especially Smoke in the Water as Ritchie got the song in one take. Most live albums are re-produced in studio's. I love Led Zeppelin but in the last few years it has come to fruition that Page re-created solos for the 30 years too late Zeppelin album How the West was Won. Blackmore's performance on Made in Japan is illustrates that he is one of the world's bet guitarist, and live probably the best in the live arena. Once again, the BEST ever version.
Jon Lord, the reason I fell in love with the hammond...learning the scale at the end of this song as a teen was the most awesome thing....ever. LoNg LiVe RoCk!
I was 10 years old when this album came out and got a free copy of it because my sister bought one and didn't much care for it so she gave it to me. More than any other album, it's this one that really turned me on to classic rock and strangely enough, it's because it was a live album. I was too young to fully understand what a live album was but I remember thinking how cool it was to be able to hear the singer talking to the crowd and the rest of the band just playing around and adding little touches to the song. It wasn't until some years later that I got to hear the studio versions of all these songs and, being so accustomed to the live versions and liking them so much, I remember being a little disappointed in the studio versions. That's particularly true for this song. This is the first version of it I ever heard and it's still far and away my favorite! Classic, legendary band!
This was the first version I heard of SMOTW as my dad has this LP. To this day, the studio version of the solo sounds like its being played at 3/4 speed. Ritchie Blackmore shredded this version! Its the only one I can listen to.
Not sure if you can do it with the remastered version but I think on the original vinyl version Blackmore and Lord are almost separated on the left and right channels.. If you you cut out the right channel you'll hear mostly Jon Lord
My older sister had a 45 of this performance edited for a single which cut some of the guitar solo, the organ solo, and some of the licks traded towards the end...still classic and fantastic. Wore it out.
The genre of Rock & Roll has many subgenres. Deep Purple helped popularize the heavy, blues-based rock subgenre. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are part of that subgenre. I didn't expect a reply to my post from three years ago.....LOL
Whenever there is a countdown of the best rock songs ever, this is always in the top 3. Usually, Free Bird, Baba O’Reilly and this. Even people who do not know rock music, know this song. This song is just about 50 years old. See if there is any song now they will talk about 50 years later.
Yes, and no over dubs added on afterwards. Everything you hear is just how it was when they played the shows. Absolutely incredible, best Live album ever released.
It is this version which was the b-side of the single that propelled this tune around the world to be the monster tune it became, it seems so strange the lesser versions are played more and many then don`t understand why the tune was so big. It is almost like having a $200 bottle of wine and only drinking a $2 version
These guys were at the top of thier game here and just when they were flying so high Gillan and Glover are forced out of the band by Blackmore and if only he could have chilled his ego a bit there's no telling how much higher Purple phase 2 could have climbed but they would later be replaced by Coverdale and Hughes, and sure Burn and Stormbringer are good albums but Who Do We Think We Are (which is very underrated) was recorded right before Gillan and Glover left Purple but received little attention.
One interesting aspect to this track was its release at a time when both AM and FM radio were alive and well. The softer studio version became an FM radio staple, but this live version (which I much prefer) was a smash AM hit. Was it perhaps the last hard rock AM single?
@@joelombrdo It's Ritchie's most popular riff but not his best. He had better riffs with Rainbow such as Kill The King and Man On The Silver Mountain. he said himself, its not great as it consists of just 4 notes.
Sometimes the simplest are the best. I say it's the best because it's the catchiest and because it's most well known. You are correct that he had others that were technically better. Man on the Silver Mountain is an awesome, unique riff--so true.

This song is to Rock what the "Our Father" is to Catholicism. This is it. If you are of an age, introduce this to your kids, to your nieces and nephews. It wipes away all the Miley, Gaga and Kanye. 7 notes, like a soothing balm on the soul.
By far , the best version of this song .
Live is always better with decent bands
Yup.
He was on fire that night!
And the worst part also is this , you have to scroll all the way down to get this version all above are studio
Вне всякого сомнения best

No doubt. Chills right now. Every fucking cymbal every fucking bass note makes me want to go back to the 70s . Damn

Glover's bass just floats in and takes everything to another level. I sit waiting for that bass every time I listen to this.
This is the best version of this song hands down

The way this version builds is just EPIC!

The most recognizable rift in the rock world!
Second only to the San Andreas fault 😜
have never heard a betterversion. Epic, iconic, legendary, live gold standard, you name it.
I "need" to listen to this at least once a week - Since the late 70s! Ritchie's intro and solo in this version are epic. Paice's "swing" is terrific.
From 4:10 the Ritchie solo goes otherwordly... just love that. Best live version best any version. Perfection. 🫡
