I really liked the video, you explained chipping and painting VERY well.
Done all that jobs when I was onboard. It all seems hard and tough work but with great planning and team work, this can be done with ease and productive result.

I honestly didn't realize something as simple as painting could be so extensive and time consuming. You guys have to deconstruct the outer most layer of the ship, then add it all back, which takes time and tons of physical effort. I figured you just painted over it, such as with walls. Thanks for the informative video and changing my views on how some industries have to do normally simple tasks in a much more careful and hands on way. You guys rock!

As a "non-rated" seaman in the Navy, I was the 1st one hanging over the side, on a boatswain chair or a boatswain stage! hated it!! (ret. MS1)

@@Nibiru2012ishere My old company purchased a huge machine which use water and air pressure to wash away rust and metal blisters. It could cover huge area but it is really heavy with the gun sprayer buckled on your waist. It was a German made machine called "Hammelmann"

You guys have it easy, relatively.
In shipyards where I work we chip and paint the bilges. Down to clean bare metal, we do a sspc1, sspc2, sspc3, and sspc11.
Then a sspc10 on the sspc11 area.
Very meticulous, very time consuming. Work in the bilges is extremely cramped, dark and dusty, often you have to squeeze through pipes or pipe hangers to do a job.
Working the weather deck is a cake walk in compression.
I legit have nightmares about bilges sometimes. So fucking dark

It was said "Six days though should work and do all that you are able. The seventh day Holy Stone the deck and paint and chip the cable"

I spend 1 year of my live at sea on different sailboats and l loved it .
@JeffHK- chipping and painting was a frequent conversation in my parent's house. Dad was a Bosun in the Merchant Marines. At home, Dad kept me occupied painting and keeping the house "ship shape". Although Bosun drove me to the brink of insanity with his goal to keep things tidy; I went on to study Art History and Studio Art with a focus on sculpture, photography, and (yes) painting. Thank you for this video.

A huge work . How often on most exposed parts ? Thanks that is informative, and fun
For a perfect job, we do a bit differently. First chip, making sure any black rust is gone. Then we brush it with a grinder, then sweep off any remaining dust. If we leave old paint, we make sure to brush its edges smoth. After that, we soak it in rust wash (unitor metal brite), after that has dried we wash the remains off with a rag and paint thinner. Then comes the normal steps of primer (one layer of one color, another with another color) and lastly two layers of paint. That lasts for years.
I love painting, the chipping and vibration gives me fatigue. But painting is so satisfying

JeffHK Really? I think its relaxing. Mostlly when you do that you have a lot of time on you so you just calmly get the area to look nicer and nicer. The results is the best part ofcause. And ofcause onboard i never tell anyone that i like to paint and chip, because in that case i would never get to do anything else :p

Hey Jeff, great video, keep them coming. Do you guys ever use sealer on bare metal prior to start with the primer?
In order to have positive and lasting results, crewmembers should sweep all the surface in order to remove all solid particles. The area to be painted must be free of old rusty parts to prevent corrosion and as flat and smooth as possible. These surface conditions are obtained by working with some deck pneumatic tools, such as jet chisels, derusting brushes, among others. After making the surface flat and smooth, using the mentioned tools; the area has to be swept again to remove all solid residues and washed thoroughly using suitable detergents in order to remove potential amounts of grease and oil, which affect the effectiveness of paints. Before applying the first coating; the complete area must be well dried and isolated, so that all crewmembers passing by can be alert that fresh paints are nearby. :) Extra info for this amazing video. great overview, has anyone used a Pneumatic Triplex Scaler to remove rust? If so ear protection is a must, what db noise level can a person be exposed to?
I just want to ask if what painting equipment is not used to apply primer because it produces unvenen layer and it is time consuming? Choices: Brush, Rollers, Airless Spray, Spatula

2:20 whenever possible, don't use a wire wheel. A high speed ejection of a wire to the eye will result in the loss of that eye, every time.
Also wire wheel removal of paint will cause toxic fumes that smell bad.
This information is from the insurance underwriters of steel fabrication and welding shops in the US (the only people who seem to care).

Hello i am a deck cadet from venezuela and it's interesting know how the maintenance procedures are onboard , however i have some questions, how often the maintenance is done? do the officers do this type of duties or only the unlicensed crew members? PD: i found it curious that the equipment used is pneumatic instead electrical.
Sadly have a CB that loves to chip and grind then not cover for the night. Rework is becoming the most painful thing ever.

Do you have any idea how long the new coatings last before it needs another chipping, sanding and paint application...? Do the new paint, coatings give the steel a longer life.?
nzspeedwayfan I'm not sure for a ship but I was in plant maintenance. In a plant it's 1-2 years and as needed for a new coat. The paint acts as a protective barrier to prevent the steel from oxidizing and rusting. Rust causes steel to become brittle and get weaker. So keeping paint allows the steel to stay stronger longer by preventing rust. Hope this is helps.
I used chipping hammer, my muscles get tired soon. Chipping gun and buffing machine is best.
Nice video. You forgot to apply metalbrite or similar chemical to bare metal before painting. We usually do that.

Depending on the need and use of the vessel, you must choose which type of paint will be the most appropriate. The types of paint that are most used are:
Synthetic, chlorinated rubber, bituminous, epoxy, polyurethanes and antifouling.
Also, in the market there is a wide range of products to meet the needs of each. To choose the appropriate ones we must take into account:
What material is the structure or area to be painted made of?
Is it a painting for new work, maintenance or repair?
If it is maintenance or repair, with which paintings is the boat painted?
Do we require a high performance or conventional scheme?
With which tools can / should I work?
Once you have answered these questions it will be easy to choose the system and the types of products that are most convenient to extend or improve the conditions of the vessel.

Remarks: wire brush makes the surface smooth not rough which is not what we want before painting! Application by roller is good but can not get the correct DFT.

Hello, great video, actually I had a few doubts related to this topic, first of all, the type of paint, besides the fact that has to be corrosive resistant is it regulated somehow (colour, chemical components)? Is that mentioned in a Convention or Code? I always questioned myself this because I’ve seen ships with pipelines dedicated to an specific system with different colors (i.e. ballast or fuel) depending on the ship, and I wanted to know if it’s standardized somehow, as far as I know at some point cadets also have to do this labour, I can’t wait!
Miguel Rodríguez González I don’t think there’s specific regulation on what color paint has to be, I know certain things have to be a color tho, like lifeboats are orange and fire lines/hydrants are red on American ships
I'm not specific to ships, but, in an industrial setting it's called " color coding". There are standards that say what type of say pipelines will be painted what color for easy I.d., gas lines a certain color, etc, similiar to other areas, hand rails painted yellow, etc..

Simon French most often it gets put into a bin that's reserved for dross and other metal shavings then gets sold or given to a metal reclaimer. so yes it does get recycled
What's the pay like? What's the conditions? I work at Newport News Shipbuilding, and we get stuck in the worst area possible, the bilges.
