Recently I made a single hop APA with Pahto hops and with Kveik opshaug, it was very good, incredible aroma and flavor.
Sounds great!
I did a splatch of Voss (Imperial Loki) and Hornindal (Imperial Bartelby) recently and it was really cool to do it that way. I split it down to like 2.5 gal each so it wouldn't be an overwhelming amount of beer and I fermented it high (between 80 and 90). The Voss came out really fruit forward in an acidic way whereas the Hornindal produced a much more farmhouse funky flavor. However, they were both great on their own and it was only in doing side by sides that I got to know their different characteristics. I was trying to decide which yeast I would maintain and ended up deciding to maintain both.
This is awesome! I feel like I've really got to do similar to have a fair comparison of the yeasts. I keep seeing Hornindal being recommended, so I simply have to try it soon!
I’ve been checking my ph since watching your ph video and I’ve only tried one of the 3 but it definitely tasted more hoppy than previous beers with similar amounts of hops, although it was riwaka and not used it before so we will see. I’m definitely not going back now cheers ps beers look great 👍🍻
Cheers Rick! Great that you're seeing results with the ph meter!
Cool beans! Hope to see some porters coming my way.
I've got a black IPA video coming soon! Pretty much just a hoppy Porter!
@@Kveiksmithdaryl Never really got the black IPA thing. Maybe I just haven't tried one I like. I have high hopes for yours!
Ah fair, they're not for everyone!
What do you think is the thing that makes the pale ales a particular challenge? I know I find it’s a lot more exposing of off flavours.
Also I’ve not yet moved onto playing with water chemistry yet that’s my next step to improve but our local water in Taunton favours paler beers.
Also loved “watch me compare these two identically different beers” 😆
Heya Kenny! I think you're right to say that it's more exposing of off flavours. It could be to do with my tap water being particularly hard to get a beer hop forward without intervention. Or just me being over critical of myself!
@@Kveiksmithdaryl might pick your brains for some water chemistry advice. I made a gluten free kveik barleywine last year and it’s still maturing lol.
About to harvest my second crop of home grown hops too hopefully make a green hop beer. Cheers!
Only just saw this message! Sorry! DM on FB if you want some help with water! Gosh those two beers sound amazing, I've still not made a barleywine!
Whats makes a better kveik pale ale?.... skipping the kveik and using just about any other ale yeast.
You’re breaking my heart here Musty 💔
I'm about to do a pale ale with Lutra but maybe I should split the fermenters and compare it with US05. I want to like Kveik for the convenience but taste is what matters most. If I do it I'll report findings.
I used Omega Kveik Voss last time and found it much pleasant than Lallemand version of Voss.
That's a really interesting point! I've previously used Omega Voss but have moved onto Lallemend and I think you're right, Omega is a better Voss!
