The credits needed to become a Magia Vander is 7,200. He could do it really quickly. Let's say he gets 5 credits everyday from the dungeon. That means it would only take 1,440 days, less than 4 years. He doesn't need to kill one 5 credit monster. He could kill a couple small monsters that add up to 5 credits. And that is not even counting the credits he gets from classes. It seems like becoming a Magia Vander would be very quick and easy. The only way it makes sense that becoming a Magia Vander is hard is if there are not that many monsters or all the monsters are worth high credits and are very dangerous.
I don't think this story will go this route, but it would be cool if Will falls in love with Colette. It could be done in a very nice way. He could realize that Elfaria and him have grown apart and realize how much Colette has been there for him. A story about not chasing an ideal, but instead appreciating who is around you and who has put in the effort to care for you. A story about not wanting more than you have, but instead you should love what you have. Then Colette and him rise to become Magia Vanders by helping each other. Like I said, I don't think the story is going in that direction, but I do think that is a good direction that this setup could go.
