A driver can get different penalties during or even after the race, depending on what he did wrong. During a race, the driver can get a time penalty, a drive-through or stop-and-go.
If a driver gets a time penalty he can either come into the pits, stop for the time of the penalty (usually 5 or 10 seconds) and then the crew can work on his car once that time has run out, so change tires and/or wings. If the driver does not need to pit after he got the time penalty, the time will be added to his final time of the race and his finishing position will be changed accordingly. So, for example, if a driver was leading, got a 5 second penalty and didn't serve it in the pits, those five seconds would be added to his final time and, if the driver behind him was within a five second gap, he would be moved to second place.
Drive-through is exactly what it sounds, the driver with the penalty has to drive through the pit-lane, where there is a speed limit so they lose time of the lap they are on.
Stop-and-go is the most severe penalty that a driver can be given during the race. They need to come into the pits, stop for 10 seconds, and then drive on without any work being done on the car.
Sometimes an infringement is decided to be investigated after the race, which means that the driver doesn't get a penalty during the race, but can be hit with a grid penalty. This means that during the next race, he will move down as many grid spots as the penalty dictates. So, for example, someone who qualifies P1 (starting from the first grid spot) can be relegated to P11 if he gets a 10 grid spot penalty. Some changes to the car, like new power units, give a grid penalty.
A driver can also be disqualified from a race for different reasons. They can be disqualified before the race if the car is found to not meet the requirements, during the race if they do something illegal or dangerous and are then showed the black flag, or even after the race if the car is found to be illegal. This can even lead to a race winner being disqualified and losing his race after the race and podium ceremony is over.
A black and white flag during the race means that the driver has shown unsportsmanlike behavior and is like a warning to not do it again or there will be penalties.
Some lesser consequences are reprimands or warnings to the drivers and teams that don't really affect them, but are noted and, if they collect a few of those, penalties will follow.
Drivers and teams can also get fined for infringements.
Drivers can also get suspended if they get 12 penalty points in 12 months. Those points are given for dangerous driving and crashes. The driver is then suspended for one race and the team usually get their reserve or academy driver to drive in that place.
I thinks that covers it all.
