kecleon by far! He's very expressive, although Starmie's is super cool too. Also, have a look at Honchcrow's idle in PBD. It's amazing and it makes me love the pokemon so much more
Hariyama. Hands down. Not just to comply with the rule of three. But also because it's just so fluid. Also because I remember how good the attack animations for Hariyama are as well, with the sumo push type animation.
I never noticed this before but... Kecleon... is actually really cute. Seeing it animated like this makes me forget that it is not an actual animal. It looks so alive. Gamefreak, what the hell are you doing?
Don’t forget what GameFreak did to typhlosion in gen 6. They got rid of the fire around his neck, only for it to appear when he’s in an attacking animation.
I dislike that too, but to be fair Colosseum/XD/PBR also had his fire only come out when he attacks. He looked just as odd and naked with no fire when idle there, too.
But the fire IS supposed to appear only when attacking. Gens 2-5 kinda messed that up. No I'm not a shill, I'm just saying that this one was done right.
he looks awful without his fire, but honestly that's the way it's supposed to be lol. we're just too used to the old sprites that had to have it all the time
That fire always made me excited, showing that it's a challenging opponent, but when it's all out, it looks calm but has it's guard up...😐 sorry everytime I play pokemon it's as if I'm watching an anime and not just playing it, my imagination goes wild
Exactly. The reason people are even criticising the animation so harshly in the first place is *because* the roster was cut down. Not everyone liked it before (I thought it was pretty lifeless, and all the flying mons from gen 6 and below literally hovered in place bc of sky battles back in XY), but I don't think this many people would be complaining if the animations weren't used as an excuse for cut content.
@@zoruasnivy AND it´s on the switch which allowed much more animations that are better and we probably didn´t care about animation on the 3ds because the 3ds didn´t have much power
@@zoruasnivy exactly game freaks reasoning for cutting pokemon is they have higher quality animations, yet these are the same animations for every pokemon game that has come out on the 3ds. If they released all pokemon fine i guess m, if they are cutting pokemon then where the heck are these animations they spoke of
And even then, it is a pretty weak excuse. There are other RPG's and games in general with way more enemies or NPC's in general made by companies as big as Gamefreak and they are caring about getting their animations for every NPC right and making them look good.
@@zoruasnivy If this game was drop dead gorgeous like the Let's Go crap, barely anyone would be complaining and I personally probably would be getting back into Pokemon.
It's funny because the idle animations of the pokemon in Smash Bros Ultimate are more accurate representations of the characters than the animations in their own games.
most of Smash Ultimate's character animations are better than their original counterpart, because Sakurai puts so much time into making sure they're the highest quality. Just look at Yoshi's fluid animations in Ultimate, and then go look at the animations in Yoshi's Crafted World.
I am going to buy a Switch if Game Freak names their next Stadium/Battle Revolution spin-off as "Pokémon SMASH". With high quality animations of course like Smash.
>animations aren't important yeah, I've always wanted to play a game that has characters t-posing, sliding everywhere and showing no emotion, sounds like it would be a great game.
Can't really understand why people don't care about animations. As consumers it's our jobs to ask for the best product they can make. Animations are literally what we spend all of our time staring at while playing pokemon , heck, video games in general! We want an attractive game that brings life to the characters
Because there are two types of consumers, those that think and know what they want from their product and those that just consume popular trending products and media without question. Unfortunately the latter is gonna make sure this game sales well because, you know, its Pokemon.
"The animations are not important" as someone who grew up playing different pokemon games, one of my favourite to this day is Pokemon Colosseum BECAUSE of how fluid and expressive the animations are. You feel like you are in the game. When your pokemon faints you feel a bit of sadness, because of how the pokemon goes down. Yknow, as if you were actually in the pokemon universe. I always loved watching the cool moves they used. Umbreon when using headbutt(I think? Its been a while) doesnt actually run up to the opponent, but rather it takes a step back and dashes forward. Honestly, if they did something like this in the newer games, I would be fine. Yeah contact is nice but you get the idea based on how the pokemon moves. I want to be immersed in the game. When the pokemon stay idle but the model rotates or moved up and down slightly it just... takes you out of the moment. I am actually really disappointed, I honestly thought we were going to get a BOTW like game, and my god was I excited to actually feel like I'm in the game. Ugh. Imho
Don't forget that in the Genius Sonority games, the trainers were much more expressive as well. In XD, they actually reacted when their pokemon took damage. The win/loss animations were full of personality as well, which just makes Game Freak look even worse by comparison.
Koko I don’t really like the main characters in Pokémon colosseum, because i very edgy, the main characters and other npc design are very important for me, the Pokémon too but I don’t really look at them while playing until they make a move, but overall, Game freak should add animation in Pokémon so it doesn’t look boring
You're forgetting the best part: Scizor's animations. It's weird to pluck out a specific pokemon's animations, because Scizor isn't even my favorite pokemon (Luxray 100%), but just the way Scizor moves. Most importantly, its hurt animation. It doesn't just flinch weakly from a blow, it skids all the way back across the ground before recomposing itself and flying back. It made it feel like he was...I dunno...a real animal? And not just a plastic figure standing still and giving the opponent the death stare? Little details matter, but Gamefreak missed even the big details.
I remember being in a battle with my cousin, getting sad then taking revenge for fainting my ninetales, and him pushing back because I fainted his partner. I think it was in a game where you can upload your soul silver pokemon to the Wii game
I hate how people are just ok with the fact that this game looks exactly the same as a game from 2013, down to the models, animations, and effects. It’s 6 years later people, we should expect better.
Its even worse when you stop to think that it was released for the 3DS... And now we're getting a Pokémon game, 6 years later, on a home console! We should definitely expect things with waaaaay more quality.
It realluy doesn't matter what the game looks like 6 year later. You're just going to buy the game and enjoy it. You're not going to NOT buy the game because the animations are reused. Are you also not going to buy BOTW sequel because they confirmed that they are using the same engine and same map fro the first BOTW?
People say only 150 people work at Game freak and that is supposedly an excuse for them to get lazy and not pay attention to animations, but a quick research will show that Genius Sonority who worked on PBR only have 21 employees!!!!
@@Aego384 What Suety B said and also that different teams will work on the story than the graphics so its not like having more of a story will make the whole team need to focus less on different aspects of the game like graphics quality
For the people that still defend GF's Pokemon Idle animation: Consider this, Pokemon is a combination between a Virtual pet game, and a RPG. And do you know what is the point of a virtual pet game? To simulate the feeling of having an actual pet. And Do you know that in order to qualify as a pet, it have to be alive and not look like a lifeless puppet?
It's like trying to argue with an abusive boyfriend. Been there, done that, got a broken hand for my trouble... I hate when people say " I don't care about animations/visuals, all I care about is gameplay". As if animations/visuals aren't huge contributing factors to gameplay and game feel.
- Briver - The animations definitely affect game feel. Gameplay though, that’s debatable. DistantKingdom would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the (lack of) animations and the terrible visuals in general would have a detrimental effect on the game MECHANICALLY.
@@GaahrmTheGraet it would't unless this was somehow a smash like game and you needed animations and hit boxes for the models. So yeah the animations don't affect the game mechanically. It sure as heck does affect the game feels.
@@GaahrmTheGraet But Pokémon isn't really that great of an RPG. It's accessible, sure, but the real appeal is the many Pokémon, the sense of exploration and meeting new friends. Lack of animations are a huge issue, regardless of their mechanical implications, especially when a smaller team were able to pull superior products. Even the models look better! Plus with the confirmation of the lack of a National Dex, it is the very least to demand that each Pokémon have great animations, the supposed tradeoff.
Even SNES games have better animations, for example fire emblem 4 and 5 if you turn off the animation in the map you can even see what weapon is the unit using in the map animation
"Animation isn't important" Have fun staring at a still image for 50 hours then if that's the case. Oh wait! Correction: Staring at a still image you paid over $50 for. @@thattastedpurple4246 Or maybe you haven't if you honestly believe in that. Dragon Quest is not a monster raising game, I think it's a mechanic in a couple but it's certainly not the focus of the series. Earthbound is a closer ripoff of Dragon Quest than Pokémon is. Unless you're trying to claim that all rpgs are a ripoff of Dragon Quest? Cause I got some bad news for you if that's the case...
Also, since the game's are turn-based, there's not a whole lot of game mechanics in terms of player input, so A LOT of the game resides in the visuals of the battle. If that looks unappealing or lifeless, the gameplay experience will suffer more so than other games. And I mean, it's fine in older games with static sprites, but as time goes on and consoles gain power, Gamefreak has less and less excuse. They already have no excuse considering their Black/White/B2/W2 games have way better animations than Gen 6 and up.
Actually they do have an excuse why the pixel animations are better. Because it's easier to animate pixels. Trust me. These sprites allowed Game Freak to have more artistic liberty. But 3d animation had to look more natural as there is thousands of pixels. Also, even if this wasn't the case. Consider the animators. Game freak brings out a new game basically every year. Animators, writers, programmers, they all get fatigue from working on these games. There isn't much time to slowly regain your passion for something so repetitive. Can everyone here just maybe consider game developers just a little? It hurts to see all this ignorance.
@@kakao-katze >2d sprites are easier to animate No it fucking isn't, the whole point of 3D animation is that you don't have to draw individual frames like with 2d animation. @@kakao-katze in this video he literally showed the line meshing of the starmie. Rethink your words and do your research. Also 1000 people worked on SW/SH and it still has terrible animation.
BW/BW2 had had great animations. I used to just stare at the animations to wait what varied moments they would make. It was the number one thing that caught my eye, POKEMON SPRITES THAT MOVED!
Would you believe they had those in 2000 in Pokemon Crystal, and then **removed them for 11 years**? GameFreak is consistent at only one thing: Being horrible at developing video games and somehow making a deal with the devil to let them be successful despite not putting in any effort.
My first pokemon game was white, and then black 2. When I first saw the 3d models in xy as a child I was so hyped, but after finishing the games I felt like something was missing. Even my 9 year old mind could tell how lacking the animations were in comparison
They should've stuck to static sprites if they can't bother to properly animate. The whole point of using 3D models is so you can easily animate them without redrawing each frame separately, as is done with sprites.
@@seba2366 Shh, don't bring up the generation GameFreak desperately wants us to forget. A generation with full custom animations for every pokemon in existence and the most compelling story in a mainline game, with the most believable initial rivals (Cheren, the hardcore gamer, vs Bianca, the non-PVP Pokemon player) and the most compelling True Rival in the form of N, who still has yet to be topped in any main pokemon game. GameFreak might not have any excuses for the shit quality they're putting out now if we point out their massive hypocrisy in claiming that they don't have the time to animate 3d models when they did an entire generation of hand-drawn fully animated sprites, drawn frame by frame.

slavkei as a 2D pixel animator.... It’s not that simple. The 2D animations in BW are not animated frame by frame, they are a different technique altogether, it’s similar to what Vanillaware does. The Pokémon parts are chopped, and rotated and moved around to simulate motion, but the frames themselves are not redrawn. Animating a 3D model needs it to be modeled, rigged, weight painted, textured... animating it is a tiny part of the whole process, which ends up being much more work than what they had in BW. I’ve been dissatisfied with GF’s mediocrity as much as everyone else, but arguing with misconceptions can’t generate good argument, so I had to clarify this.
"As long as the game is fun, animations don't matter" So you'd still love mario if he didn't have a jumping animation and constantly stood still even while moving? The breathtaking experience of swinging through the city as Spider-Man would be exactly the same if Spider-Man made no dynamic poses while in the air? Nothing would detract from your experience of mario kart, even if the characters had no unique animations, just sat lifelessly in their carts and just kept looking straight ahead at all times?

One can only hope that Gen 9 will be made by another studio entirely. Game Freaks glory days have been over ever since they first tapped into the 3D world.
Gamefreak's "Town" has a lot more soul than Pokémon SnS. I can blame them for skimping on Pokémon, but I'm still going to support wherever they go next. :)
What if the idle animations were determined by personality? That would bring in player immersion and optional complexity to the games. Edit: nature not personality
In offline play this would be amazing, but for competitive it wouldn't work. The animations would give away the nature and potentially what build that pokemon is using to the opponent.

I'm gonna be honest and say Gen 5 (BW*2) felt like the last time Gamefreak was giving it their all. Gen VI (XY) and beyond has felt pretty soulless like they are only putting the games out just to meet some class deadline. There's some effort there but its minimal and in some cases very out of touch like a grandpa trying to use a computer.
If they're not going to customize animations for each Pokemon and make everything pop, I'd rather them just stick with 2D sprites. I don't think there's a single 3D model that actually looks good in the face of all the 2D sprites that came before it, and they're doing nothing to improve the animations for them.
Gen 5 sold pretty horribly unfortunately. So thus, gamefreak decides that gen 5s good points must be bad points. Largest regional dex solely featuring new pokemon and zero old ones? If animations didn't matter, then let's just have the 3D models just T-Pose. Let's just do that then. Don’t forget masuda saying that they’re not having all the pokemon in the game for the sake of “better graphics and animations that give the pokemon PERSONALITY”
Something I only just noticed now because of this video... Pokemon in the animations made in gen 6 and onwards... They don't blink. I don't think there needs to be an explanation as to why that's an issue.
I know this is a year old but I couldn’t agree more with what he said. Not just in Pokémon games but in all mediums. Wether in a film, game, show etc the animation of something is really important. The way I would describe it is like reading a book out loud. You could just say it in monotone, you could just say it quietly or you could just shout it. But we don’t because we all recognise that how the story/book is read is just as important as what is being read. Jut like how animations are just as important as what the games/films/shows story is.
And the saddest thing is what a immense waste of it's potential it is, Pokemon is one of the most successful franchises ever and let's face it has the resources to make good animation games and story it's company isn't just a small studio anymore trying to manage by financially so they can perfectly do they just have to drop less games( and in bigger time periods what's the use of rushing games the only real success of sword and shield -keeping in mind it's actual potential- was it's financial one- and no I literally haven't even played it but a game with that little time needed for completion is not cutting it for me to consider buying it sadly for anything else it has to offer, no matter whether a ton of it's other options are nice and new and yes- actually exiting you can't completely favor that over story and post story or you know ACTUAL LENGTH OF THE GAME NEEDED TO MAKE IT a *JOURNEY* WHICH IS THE LITERAL WHOLE POINT OF IT otherwise IT *IS* POINTLESS UGH- ;-;) and make the fewer games they are then responsible for better, even with just that, good care put into the animation(Because if you are gonna cut the Pokédex to make the animations more lively please actually make sure that's a thing ;-;) I think that alone could have given it all so much more soul, that and a good use of charismatic characters so that even if there is less actual planned game and story there's actual things to discover and there are reasons for you to wanna do so and revisit it. I don't know. I just want a break from feeling like the one thing I loved about my childhood isn't there anymore- because it got lost somewhere along the way. Yeah the new Pokémon are good and the designs for the characters aren't necessarily bad either and I don't doubt the potential I bet the designers put a lot of effort into the creation of them at the very least but the spirit of Pokémon got lost somewhere along the way of translating Pokémon into modern time consoles and 3d animation so no matter how exciting the new options are without the genuine feel of love and care for the story, characters, charm, challenge, places and excitement and strive for adventure that keeps you hooked the sad thing is that I end up leaving the newly bought game on the side to collect dust, and for an outcome like that I'd rather leave it be. Yes it's a kid's game and I am now adult. But this "old games" that I played as a kid still bring me joy to this day. It's literal charm is how ageless it is and stays inside your head years and years after as at least a memory of how it made you *feel*.The Pokémon movies whole charm is how despite them being kids movies I can still still watch them now and cry not only simply because of nostalgia but because I now understand the whole message behind them in a way I would've never been able to as a child and I love it, and because I can still discover and rediscover new things to it no matter how much time passes because it *was* genuine. That is what I want in a pokemon game. That was what they were able to do and that was what made it what it was to me, it's about how a world so alive and a journey that's so your own made you feel- and without that it's not really pokemon to me. And seeing something you love so much slowly go down- I'm not surprised so many are in denial.

Before things were simple but on point- now that the medium was changed they are complicated but lack finishing and the time to flourish. That itself is a shame too for what the game in high-quality 3-d could have been. Idle animations are a corner-store of gameplay, as someone who plays a lot of fighting games (yes including pokken) idle animation is something you absolutely need to get right in order to communicate at a glance what kind of opponent you are up against. Defender: Oh my god! It's only five months. They can polish the game in that amount of time, stop being negative! Look at Mario Odyssey, it got a massive upgrade between the first trailer and the end product within six months. Me: You... do realize they'll mostly be working on localization at this stage. And although the thing about Odyssey is true it still looked pretty good in its release while Pokemon SwSh looks almost like a beta. Defender: .... Defender: It's not that simple! You're not an expert in game design, so what do you know about development-- Me: DO YOU?!
It bothers me that the Pokémon Amie, and other games like that have animations that you can not see in the Dex... And most of the time, they’re really good! The only one I really know is one for Glaceon. It legit does a backflip on the spot. What!?
LoLoLaaarry124 that shows their backwards priorities: “lets give all the more interesting animations to that one mode some people may or may not care about, AND let’s cut corners in the battle mode people will be playing and seeing ALL THE TIME regardless if they’re playing the story, competitive, collecting, nuzlocking, casually, etc.”
I don't understand why people are saying "Lol animation isn't important" when that's literally one of the reasons Gamefreak has stated why all the Pokemon won't be in Gen8 since they are, AND I QUOTE, "We're creating it with much higher fidelity with higher quality animations" which is a bullshit lie since everything we've seen is just reused from Gen6/7 with slight touch ups.
@@thejuic3b0i64 They are literally using the 3DS assets and animations, it's a billion dollar company using hardware stronger than the 3DS and Wii. I fail to understand how they can't. The Animations for expressiveness already exist if they really wanted that.

"b-b-b-b-but theres over 800 pokemon" well now there isn't. if they remove the national dex, they should make up for it by making the pokemon we do have more animated
@Ignatius David Partogi But then there's news that Game Freak halved their resources to work on another new game which they called their top priority... so now we know where all the resources went.
493 Pokemon are already animated really well in PBR and they could have just re-used those. Sure they'd be using animations from a 10+ year old game but they're a hell of a lot better than what we have now.

creatures inc probably makes the good idle animation and gamefreak removes them because their game literally can't handle them because they are so bad at optimizing the game.
"as long as it's a good game" "If it's a good game" Are these idiots not realizing that the animations being completely absent are part of the reason WHY the game isn't good?
There are other still important factors to account for, and animations are merely a very, very essential part of one of those things: the presentation. The other factors, ordered by importance in an actual RPG, are as follows. Story: Story is essentially the most important thing in an RPG. The one thing RPGs are designed for is to tell a lengthy, well-written story in the form of an interactive experience, and the one thing neither critics, defenders, or apologists will ever know until release is the story. Why? Because all of these people will only get hints of what's coming up, which is, like... what? Just the hints and none of the fancy, detailed stuff everyone will be seeing once they dive in? Yeah, that's it. And because I can't comment on the story, I have no opinion on it whatsoever. Presentation (ties with story as #1): Animations definitely fit in here, but there are other things that are important to this aspect, most importantly a working User Interface. It's essentially what you'll have to look at alongside the animations, and the one thing you must not do is make the interface clunky. What's Sword and Shields UI going to be? Obviously a simple, easy-to-use one that'll allow players to easily decide what to do in battle. That's automatically a good thing about Sword and Shield. The lack of pokemon animations, on the other hand, is automatically a bad thing. Of course it went without saying that the animation quality went towards all the trainers (Bea, anyone?). Presentation be neutral. Game Balance: Literally the deciding factor as to what makes a turn-based RPG a game is the balance. Pretty much everything about this is all about numbers and what strategies that need to be taken in order to work your way around those numbers (ex. status effects, buffs, debuffs, weaknesses and resistances). So far, it seems like Sword/Shield is amping up the difficulty a little while making sure the difficulty is still steady. Yes, difficulty is actually important. I'll definitely dock it down if Dynamax is indeed forced onto both sides of the battlefield like it's currently made out to be (because honestly, those just throw in another buff race). Overworld: Yes, the overworld, because this is where stuff like puzzles and quests will be put in. Puzzles and quests, as in game mechanics. We've yet to see any of the games' puzzles and quests yet despite the overworld featuring god-knows-how-many roaming mons, though I don't see it stacking up to Sun/Moon's overworld with its trials essentially consisting of quests and a boss battle (good god, that Wishiwashi battle) in each. Controls: If this were a 2D RPG, probably the least important thing is the controls since all you really need to do is make sure a character stops at the right tile or the character can go through what clearly looks like a spot they're meant to go through. If this were a 3D RPG, well, it's the same thing but you have to work with analog control, which takes plenty of more work to handle than simple D-pad movement, not to mention 3D models require a much different set of hitboxes to prevent players from falling into the void from a wrong step into them. Taking all these into account, I'd say they won't be as good as the defenders are making it out nor as bad as the critics are making it out. They'd just be "okay" at best and "meh" at worst.
@@Flashlight237 Oh, so you're just going to ignore the pokemon popping into existence and the inexcusably poor textures and graphical bugs in the presentation side? Alright.
And the sad part is some pokemon have great idles but so many are so bad, incineroars idle is great, he is smug and waving the opponent towards him and roars every so often. And then pokemon like starmie just stand there
Vibrava, Masquerain, Yanma and Yanmega are all great too. Honourable mention to normal form Necrozma, who is supposed to be a bit dead and looks like it's in pain sometimes.
Proof too that the PBR animations are way better than SnS is that the Kanto pokemon have been using the same animations since Stadium, the Johto have been using the same animations since Stadium 2, and the Hoenn pokemon have been using the same animations since Coliseum! Despite their age, they still are leagues better than anything we've seen since X/Y and even come from far inferior systems when compared to the Switch.
I think people think that the models are 'better' because of the HD on the switch compared to the bad quality on the 3ds. But don't be fooled, its the same animation.
Long story short, Gamefreak are a joke and don’t deserve Pokemon anymore, pass it to a company that can do better, Gamefreak have admitted themselves that they don’t care.

Yeah, if Atlus wasnt owned by Sega then Pokemon should be handed to them. They make high quality animations, and dont sacrifice game features (unlike game freak with the national dex)
Yeah I mean it’s not like Pokémon games have anything of substance like a story, or an animated gloriously rendered region( besides one bad area shown off at e3 that is likely being improved upon as we speak) or even a postgame that could literally be anything from revisiting the goddam sinnoh region, to another looker sidequest. Henry Knippling Pokemon games are not known for their stories. Every game has the same story: child gets Pokemon, bumps into gang, gang wants to capture a legendary Pokemon to rule the world, child beats them. Also "gloriously rendered"? They're just low poly motionless fbxs with standered lighting. Any bloke with unity could make a better looking game. Re-using older assets while not bringing back all of the Pokemon is quite lazy. Fun Fact: PBR, XD Colosseum, and Stadium 2 use the animations from the previous games, meaning gen 1 Pokemon have had the *same* animations since Stadium 1 on the N64, and you know what? They *still* look better than anything X&Y/USM have given us. Genius Sonority, who developed Colosseum-PBR used these animations because they're smart, instead of *making entirely new animations for Pokemon you wont even see in the story, just use the old ones from previous games.* And guess what? It worked. They work smarter, not harder, and seeing as they have 22 employees according to Wikipedia (actual citation needed, please) its very beneficial they they do in fact work smarter, and not harder. In case you're wondering, Game Freak has 143 employees as of 2018 and still cant do something a 22 employee company could do from 2003-2016.
Pokemon XD is one of my favourite pokemon game ever. And as old as it is it still has better animations than the new pokemon games. Sad reality we live on

Not everyone liked it before (I thought it was pretty lifeless, and all the flying mons from gen 6 and below literally hovered in place bc of sky battles back in XY), but I don't think this many people would be complaining if the animations weren't used as an excuse for cut content.

"The animations are not important"
as someone who grew up playing different pokemon games, one of my favourite to this day is Pokemon Colosseum BECAUSE of how fluid and expressive the animations are.
I wouldnt go that far, but they really are great animations.

@@kakao-katze >2d sprites are easier to animate
No it fucking isn't, the whole point of 3D animation is that you don't have to draw individual frames like with 2d animation. Also, who told you 3D animation has to look more natural? You can easily be just as creative with 3D animation as with 2D. Have you never seen guilty gear xrd or Dragon Ball Fighterz's animations? Please do your reasearch before you type dumb bullshit like this.
@@kakao-katze in this video he literally showed the line meshing of the starmie. If professional people are working on this game, which I hope they are, then I hope they know how to animate using something like line meshing, which is much easier to manipulate than having to draw frames pixel by pixel. Rethink your words and do your research. Also 1000 people worked on SW/SH and it still has terrible animation.

Yeah! gen 5 animations are so cool.
Would you believe they had those in 2000 in Pokemon Crystal, and then **removed them for 11 years**? GameFreak is consistent at only one thing: Being horrible at developing video games and somehow making a deal with the devil to let them be successful despite not putting in any effort.
@@slavkei
Tecnically, the pokemon in Crystal verison didin't move at all. They only made an small animation when getting out of the pokeball.
My first pokemon game was white, and then black 2. When I first saw the 3d models in xy as a child I was so hyped, but after finishing the games I felt like something was missing. Even my 9 year old mind could tell how lacking the animations were in comparison
YES
They should've stuck to static sprites if they can't bother to properly animate. The whole point of using 3D models is so you can easily animate them without redrawing each frame separately, as is done with sprites.

slavkei as a 2D pixel animator....
"As long as the game is fun, animations don't matter"
So you'd still love mario if he didn't have a jumping animation and constantly stood still even while moving? The breathtaking experience of swinging through the city as Spider-Man would be exactly the same if Spider-Man made no dynamic poses while in the air? Nothing would detract from your experience of mario kart, even if the characters had no unique animations, just sat lifelessly in their carts and just kept looking straight ahead at all times?
The ironic part is animations can make a game fun. One of my favorite games Enter the Gungeon is a good example. Enemies move in different ways that make sense with their personalities

As far as the sprite based 2D games go black and white was the best, the GameCube titles and PBR are still the best 3D games.

Idle animations are a corner-store of gameplay, as someone who plays a lot of fighting games (yes including pokken) idle animation is something you absolutely need to get right in order to communicate at a glance what kind of opponent you are up against. Are they jumpy and limber? Focused and collected? Zone you out with special moves? Clunky and defensive? When everyone's animation looks the same how are you supposed to figure out their style of combat?
Prime example: Delphox. Delphox has a good speed stat, but looking at how it stands in its idle animation I'd think it was a more on the defensive side and extremely slow.
@@justice8718 so you think characterization of idle animations isn't important for rpgs full of almost a thousand characters and you need to help new players understand each and everyone of them?

Pokémon Stadium was also dope for this very reason. I remember the entrance animation of Nidoking doing like a war cry. Snorlax flipping over after getting brutally hit by an attack. Blastoise actually using his cannons... 😪
I loved how many Pokemon had fainting animations that made it seem like they were making an effort not to collapse or to get back up. Mewtwo for instance.
Also love how in Pokémon stadiums they do the kicking animations. Have you seen kabutops kicking animation? It is awesome. Same with the fighting Pokémon.

"as long as it's a good game"
"If it's a good game"
Are these idiots not realizing that the animations being completely absent are part of the reason WHY the game isn't good?
Children dont have common sense.
@@Flashlight237 Oh, so you're just going to ignore the pokemon popping into existence and the inexcusably poor textures and graphical bugs in the presentation side? Alright.
