  • In this video, I show you how to put a young horse on the trailer.
This is Lilly's second time seeing the trailer (the first day is in Basic Horse Training Academy), and you will see how well our groundwork has set her up to win. I will give you some essential tips to remember when training your young horse to trailer load.
This work shouldn't be done in a day. You work a little at a time to keep your horse calm, confident and trusting in you. You also work at it with your horse AFTER you have taught your horse groundwork. Set your horse up to win!
Entering the float proves how good your groundwork and relationship with your horse are. How good is yours? If your groundwork is good and you have your horse's trust, you shouldn't have a problem loading your horse!

Hi Josie, love your voice and the way you say "hi, I am Josie", something very motherly about it 😊.
My arab is lot more dramatic than this horse, but we only use the float once in a couple of months.so may be I need a little more patience and practice.

They are two different lessons. Make sure she can go up to the front and just stand there. Then you ask her back before she decides to go out. Then spend time putting her half in half out and stop. Then out from there. Once she will stand at the front you slowly make your way down her body scratching her and making it enjoyable. Just move half a step to start with them move back to her head telling her how good she is. Maybe back her out then and have a “rest” somewhere. It takes time but I know you can do it. 😊

Great video again. I was struggling with my young guy backing off every time I went back to do butt bar, but hadn’t practiced standing next to him and walking back to his butt and petting him and focusing on him standing. Lots more practice ❤

Yes, move down his side. Shake things, make noise and if he backs out thats ok. Just put him back in quietly and carmly and do it again. He will get used to it. If you can send him out on a circle you can use the same aids to send him in the float ahead of you and get him to eventually self load. I am always amazed that horses will overcome their inbuilt fear of confined spaces and go into trailers for us. They never cease to amaze me 🥰

Hi Josie, I had my 3 yr old loading lovely like this, and after an outing to a trainer, he suddenly refused to load to go home. He pulled back and refused. Nothing else had changed. I am currently starting over with this practice and being patient with him. Any thoughts?

Was that his first trip? The first trip I do is around the block. 5 minutes and I never travel my young horses alone. Was he alone?

He had probably about 4 or or 5 trips in the trailer by himself and many more practice sessions. He would load mostly by himself with me pointing in and cueing him . Then suddenly decided he didn't want to load to go home. He pulled back and refused. Never had a negative experience and is bonded to me. It baffles me!
